NOTE-TAKING METHODS

NAME: _______________________________
IN THIS WORKSHEET, YOU WILL PRACTICE THREE DIFFERENT STYLES OF TAKING NOTES USING CHAPTER
TWO IN YOUR TEXTBOOK. READ EACH SECTION AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS PROVIDED FOR EACH STYLE.

THE CORNELL METHOD

RULE YOUR PAPER WITH A 2 INCH MARGIN ON THE LEFT LEAVING A SIX-INCH AREA ON THE RIGHT IN
WHICH TO MAKE NOTES. DURING CLASS OR READING, TAKE DOWN INFORMATION IN THE SIX-INCH AREA.
WHEN THE INSTRUCTOR OR BOOK MOVES TO A NEW POINT, SKIP A FEW LINES. AFTER CLASS OR READING,
COMPLETE PHRASES AND SENTENCES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. FOR EVERY SIGNIFICANT BIT OF
INFORMATION, WRITE A CUE (KEY WORD) IN THE LEFT MARGIN. TO REVIEW, COVER YOUR NOTES WITH A
CARD, LEAVING THE CUES EXPOSED. SAY THE CUE OUT LOUD, THEN SAY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN OF THE
MATERIAL UNDERNEATH THE CARD. WHEN YOU HAVE SAID AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, MOVE THE CARD AND SEE
IF WHAT YOU SAID MATCHES WHAT IS WRITTEN. IF YOU CAN SAY IT, YOU KNOW IT.
CHAPTER TWO, SECTION 1 (2.1)

2 Types of
Governments

There are non-democratic and democratic

governments.

Types of nondemoctatic
Governments

Monarchies- power is located in a person like a

king or queen who rule over a kingdom/empire
Dictatorships- absolute power is located within
one person who normally rises to power
through force. May be a group of peoplecalled an oligarchy.
Theocracies- power is located in one or more
religious leader who claim to rule on behalf of
the gods worshipped in their country

THE OUTLINING METHOD

LISTENING/READING AND THEN WRITE IN POINTS IN AN ORGANIZED PATTERN BASED ON SPACE INDENTION.
PLACE MAJOR POINTS FARTHEST TO THE LEFT. INDENT EACH MORE SPECIFIC POINT TO THE RIGHT. LEVELS
OF IMPORTANCE WILL BE INDICATED BY DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE MAJOR POINT. INDENTION CAN BE AS
SIMPLE AS OR AS COMPLEX AS LABELING THE INDENTATIONS WITH ROMAN NUMERALS OR DECIMALS.
MARKINGS ARE NOT NECESSARY, AS SPACE RELATIONSHIPS WILL INDICATE THE MAJOR/MINOR POINTS.

The First Government

a. The Declaration of Independence
Passed 7/4/1776
i. The Declaration and Human Rights
1. Lists reasons colonies wanted to separate
from Great Britain
2. If a government ignores what the people
want, it is no longer a legitimate government
3. Emphasized human rights (rights we are all
born with as people)
ii. Ideals of American Government
Everyones rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness are equal to every other persons
iii. The American Revolution

in 1781
2. Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783- GB
officially recognized U.S. as independent
The Articles of Confederation

Weakness of the Articles

THE MAPPING METHOD

MAPPING IS A GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE CONTENT OF A LECTURE. IT IS A METHOD THAT
MAXIMIZES ACTIVE PARTICIPATION, AFFORDS IMMEDIATE KNOWLEDGE AS TO ITS UNDERSTANDING, AND
EMPHASIZES CRITICAL THINKING.

By 1787, Americans
realized they needed to
fix the Articles of
Confederation

Constitutional
ConventionPhiladelphia, 1787

A New
Constitution

Magna Carta in 1215- free

people couldnt be
arrested, punished
without trial. Protected
the parliament from the
monarch.

English Bill of Rights

in 1689- right of the
people to make
requests of the
government,
protection of people
from unfair
punishment
All meetings were done in
secret so public pressure
would be relieved. Hard
decisions could be made in
secret.

Parliamentary Government- a
separate law-making body
outside of the head of the
country

Federalism- power
should be divided
between a central
government and
state governments

Delegates writing the

new Constitution
pulled from their
British government
background

Disagreed over how the legislature

should be represented- larger states
wanted it based on population,
smaller states wanted representation
to be equal. Compromised and we
have two-houses: Senate and House
of Representatives
