Text Set: Respect
Anchor Text: Are you respectful today? by Kris Yankee, Marian Nelson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGZIV09mJiw

This is a complex text that challenges students to consider their daily behavior and
whether or not they have been respectful. The text also gives practical examples of ways
that respect can be shown at home, school and within the community. Additionally, this
text serves as a quality anchor text because it can be revisited throughout the study as
students ask themselves each day, Was I respectful today?.

Topic/Line of Inquiry:

Respect: What does it mean to show respect? Why is it important to be respectful? How

can we show respect for each other and the school?

This text set is based on the kindergarten Social Studies standard below. This text set will
be implemented in a kindergarten classroom during the Complex Text block of the
Kindergarten Literacy Framework. As educators develop the whole child, it is crucial to
teach and practice the concept of respect on a daily basis.

Level: K-2
CCSS: H3.K.4 Demonstrate respect for each other in the classroom and school.
Anchor Text Annotation & Connections:

Genre: Realistic Fiction

32 pg. book
This text will challenge students to reflect on and analyze their personal behavior while
building upon their understanding of the concept of respect. Asking themselves if their
daily behavior demonstrates respect gives them the opportunity to practice and refine
how they show respect to their classmates and school. Reflecting on our personal
behavior, the impact our behavior has on others, and refining that behavior is a skill that
will benefit them for the duration of life.

Benefits: See Above

Constraints/Drawbacks: I do not see any obvious constraints or drawbacks to using this text.

during story time, didnt wash up, or splashed too much at the pool? Then the world would be a
