PERSONAL STATEMENT

My name is Taufik Abidin; This year, I am 25 years old. I took my bachelor

degree (2010) in Pharmacy and Apothecary (2011) from Institut Teknologi
Bandung (ITB) , while my Master degree was from National Taiwan University of
Science and Technology (NTUST)
I was took my undergraduate pharmacy in one of the best university of
Indonesia: ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung). During my undergraduate years, I
acquired a strong foundation in the four main groups of pharmacy : chemistry,
pharmacology, pharmaceuticals and pharmacognosy. I leaned more towards
chemistry and pharmaceuticals as I like to work on synthesis, analysis and
production.
My undergraduate final project was was done under the supervision of Prof. Dr.
Slamet Ibrahim S., Apt, head of the pharmacy chemistry group in the Pharmacy
Department.. I then continued to pursue apotechary and had some practical
knowledge about the pharmacy world by doing internships in PT . Kalbe farma,
PT Kimia Farma pharmacy and BPOM (the FDA of Indonesia). These experience
gave me the knowledge on the needs of pharmacutical standard ingredients
and robust plus versatile analytical methods to detect various chemicals
I then continued my master degree at National Taiwan University of Science
and Technology (NTUST) in the Chmical Engineering Department. Under the
guidance of Prof. Der-Jang Liaw, I learned and practiced the organic synthesis,
purification and analysis deeply. I had difficulties on the synthesis and
purification, mainly the yield was too low or the need to search for a new way
to purify the compounds, but with hardwork, help from my Labmates and my
supervisor gudance, I was able to finish it.
I often must go to other departments and even another university to do the
analysis of the samples. It was difficult to do the paperwork as Im not too
proficient in Mandarin and sometimes had difficulty to communicate.
Nevertheless I succeeded to overcome these difficulties and obtain my master
degree.
After obtaining my master degree, I then worked as an assistant in the polymer
labarotory in ITBs Chemical Engineering department, working on some project.
I worked on the Ethylene Bis-Stearamide production project in the Ministry of
Industry, becoming a trainer for Industrial Plastic Basic Training and working on
the Hazardous Materials Mapping in 18 Province of Indonesia.

Throughout my life, I have learned and gained many valuable experiences

which was not only the fruit of hard work, determination and intelligence of my
own, but also because of the people around me, which leads me to share what I
have done with others and do my best to help them. I have an overwhelming
desire and thirst to learn, invent and teach something new and useful to others
that led me to continue my education by pursuing a Ph.D degree. I believe
here, at your university, is the place where it can offer a great environment for
research and education because of its world class facilities, faculty members
and wide scintific community. I also have faith it provides a great chance to
improve myself socially and scintifically. I am ready to meet new challenges
and embrace the positive things in order to adapt to the new environment.
Someday, after I finish my degree, I would be a researcher and lecturer who
devotes himself to his land. I want to develop new concepts and technologies
based on polymers and other organic materials which can be obtained from
local resources that will make production and purification easier and
cheaper.Iam sure that have the ability to share my knowledge to the people of
Indonesia. I hope Indonesia will give a great contribution in order to bring
happiness to this world.

Why you have chosen this particular PhD.

A. Indonesia is one of the biggest palm oil producers, so my country has a
problem with the Palm oil waste
B. It is related to environemntal issue on how to deal with waste
C. The waste is used to produce fuel (important issue regarding energy crisis)
and glycerin (for pharmacy and industry and intermediate)

How it fits with your skills, experience and academic interests.

Synthesis and Analysis, Pharmacy and Chemical Engineering, To become a lecturer
and also involved in Industrial Development in the palm oil Industry.

You do not need to try to answer your research question, just provide an outline
of why you want this place, and what qualifications, skills and work experience
make you so well suited to it.

Why do you want to pursue a PhD?

What are your reasons for wanting to study at a particular university?

Why is this particular area of most interest to you?

What previous academic and practical experience have you got that shows your
interest in your chosen subject?
Pharmacy, Chemical engineering, labwork, RIPIN Industrial plan Indonesia,

What skills do you have that will help you make the transition between
undergraduate and postgraduate study and make you succeed in the research area?

Why you want to do this particular course/study this particular area of

research write down your reasons why you are interested in and enthusiastic
about pursuing further study into the field.
Convey your motivation and mention any relevant projects, dissertations or essays
that demonstrate your skills. Put down anything that shows creativity, responsibility
and independence.
You should also mention any prizes or awards you have, plus any relevant travelling
experiences or time spent studying abroad.
Why you want to study this particular subject make it clear why you have
chosen the subject e.g. does the course place emphasis on a certain area of the
subject, or offer specialist modules? When did you become interested in the field
and what knowledge have you gained about it?
Why you have chosen to apply to this particular university does the institution
have special research facilities/equipment that appeal to you? Are there certain
academic staff in the field you wish to work with?
Academic skills you have to offer include IT skills, and knowledge of any
appropriate research techniques.
Personal skills e.g. ability to work as part of team; communicate effectively with
others; organisation and time management, etc. Give examples of how you have
demonstrated each of these skills, as this shows that you have considered all your
strengths and potential weaknesses.
Place emphasis on your strengths and show how you are a better candidate than any

others.
Relevance of your undergraduate degree to the course describe how any work
you did as part of your degree relates to the course you are applying for, and what
foundation in knowledge it has laid for further study.
Career aims although you may not have a concrete idea of what career path you
hope to follow after completing your PhD, you should at least have some ideas that
you can put down for your statement.

For example, do you think you will want to continue working in academia, either in
research or teaching? Or do you see yourself working in industry?
Having an idea of which direction you would like to go in will show more
commitment to the course, and show that you are likely to get good results.

Try to make it unique - one way you can make your statement stand out is to relate
a detailed example of something specific to your own experience, e.g. something
that influenced your decision to pursue a particular undergraduate degree, or career
path.

Remember that for each point you make in your statement, always provide an
example to back it up.

E.g. if you are applying for a Masters in Biotechnology, saying you are a "good
scientist" isn't enough - give examples of your previous laboratory experience, any
projects you have completed and what technical skills you have learned.
