EDTORIAL

VIDYA DADATI VINYAM

Vidya dadati vinayam,

vinaya dadati paatrataam,
paatratva dhanamaapnoti,
dhanat dharmam tatatsukham.
Education gives Humility; Humility gives
Character; from Character one gets Wealth; from
Wealth one gets Righteous (dharmam) life; from
Righteousness one gets Happiness.
Neither the thief can steal it, nor can the
king take it, neither divided amongst brothers,
nor too heavy to carry. The more you expand
it, the more it increases, Knowledge is the
prime wealth.
We go to school, college, universities etc to
study in our respective fields to live our life
peacefully and earn money for our livelihood.
The Sages professed "Guru Shishya Parampara"
means learning from teachers who were well
versed in their fields and give to the Society in
the form of their research the Vedas, Upnishads
and Puranas so that general masses can be
enlightened and live peacefully.
In this scientific age many scientists have
given much in the last 400 years to make this
world more comfortable to live. In our Vedic
era and later evolutions of Sanatan Dharma our
Sages were also engage in doing research on
arms and ammunitions so that demonic minds
can be cleansed from earth but never used them
against the peaceful people.
Now in this 21st century the scenario has
totally changed. The politicians are exploiting
the young clean mind to meet their ends. The
present scenario in India is worst than any other
place in the world. When we talk about the
4
,LVkseSfVDl

difficulties and aspirations of the general public

and raise our voice against the rulers that suits
everyone. There are very less solutions available
with the rulers due to paucity of resources and
finances. The general masses because of less
understanding of the scenario of the country as
a whole are limited to their own needs and start
following the versions publicized by the students
who are mere pawns of political aspirants.
In our physical body we have negative and
positive systems and this is law of nature due to
the fact that negative always mesmerized the
positive. Man to man professing is very difficult
again everybody has its own perceptions.
Student life always enchants everyone and they
are full of energies and if nurtured in any way
they quickly grasp and people accept the same
very easily.
The only solution to this problem is to have
proper check on the School, Colleges and
Universities. The first timer embargo is to be
imposed in the interest of nation and its people
at large.
The recent case in Indian Universities has
exposed such conspiracy to de-stabilize the
cultural, social and economical health of the
country. This has become menace and our
Government should by legislation in the
parliament and make law that educational
institutions should only impart education in their
respective fields and not disintegrate the nation.
This will be good for the students and the country
as a whole.

New Year Celebration

8 April, 2016

GUDI PADWA OF MAHARASHTRA

Gudi Padwa or Samvatsar Padvo is celebrated
as the first day of the year by Maharashtrians and
Konkanis. On this day new Samvatsara, which is
cycle of sixty years, starts. All sixty Samvatsara are
identified by unique name.
Gudi Padwa is celebrated as Ugadi by the
people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Both Gudi
Padwa and Ugadi are celebrated on the same day.
Gudi Padwa is Marathi New Year according to
Luni-Solar calendar. Luni-Solar calendars consider
the position of the Moon and the position of the Sun
to divide the year into months and days. The counterpart of Luni-Solar calendar is Solar calendar which

considers only position of the Sun to divide the year

into months and days. Because of that Hindu New
Year is celebrated twice in the year with different
names and at two different times of the year. The
Hindu New Year based on Solar calendar is known
as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam,
Vaisakhi in Punjab, Pana Sankranti in Orissa and
Naba Barsha in West Bengal.
The day begins with ritual oil-bath followed by
prayers. Oil bath and eating Neem leaves are must
rituals suggested by scriptures. North Indians don't
celebrate Gudi Padwa but start nine days Chaitra
Navratri Puja on the same day and also eat Neem
with Mishri on the very first day of Navratri.

THREE ASPECTS OF MOTHER DIVINE

Swami Chinmayananda
Religion without philosophy is superstition.
Philosophy without religion is mere theory. And
nowhere is the wedding of these two as perfect and
enduring as in the great religion of Hinduism.
Religion, everywhere, includes three sections:
the ritualistic forms and symbols, the mythology
and the philosophy. These three are three stages
regular, systematic, measured and graded. In this
light let us view Navaratri, the nine day's Devi Puja
and the glorious end of it all on the tenth day, the
Vijaya Dasami. What do we do in these nine days?
Every house is cleaned, and there is an air of
festivity in the entire village or town. Each house
is converted for these ten days to serve as a temple.
For ten days there is regular pujas, kirtans, songs,
and reading of the spiritual books.
Now what exactly is the procedure? These
nine days are divided into three sections, each three
days; the first three days are dedicated for Durga
or Kali, the second for Lakshmi (the Raja
Rajeshwari) and the last three days for Goddess
Saraswati. The nine days' puja ends in the great
festivity and joy inexpressible, on the tenth day the Dussera Day, the Vijaya Dasami Day. Thus the
ritual, with forms and symbols - "the burning of
the Devil" at the dawn heralds in the Vijaya Dasami,
and the merry laughter and joyous feasting.
What Then Do These Nine Days Of Celebration
Mean?
The first three days we invoke Sri Kali Mata:
Mother Durga. Durga is the "Power Terrible" that
manifested out of the Unmanifested Eternal which
is paripurna, (full or complete in all respects) and
so has in THAT all powers. "Mother Terrible" took
the "form dreadful" to kill and end the rakshasas
(devils) that were roaming about the world of men,
tyrannizing over the faithful, the devoted: the divine
sadhakas (spiritual seekers). This is the story in a
nutshell as we read it in the Puranas. The Puranic
stories are all, Chinmaya repeats, all figurative
voiceless truths of the Upanishads, the Brahma
Sutra and Gita - the great oceans of the highest
philosophies in the world.

,LVkseSfVDl

When a jiva on his march has thus purified

himself, and gets recharged with the Daivi sampatti
(the divine wealth), he is a fit adhikari - a fit student
- to be initiated into the philosophical side of
religion. He is told of the supreme Reality, the state
of sat-chit-ananda (absolute Knowledge, absolute
Existence, absolute Bliss, the padvi (state) of
sivoham the becoming of the Lord, the merger of
the jiva to become Mahesvara, the final waking
from this dream of samsara into realization that "I
am the all-pervading knowledge in itself. Pure
existence beyond time, space and causality - where
the experience is I am God". This knowledge is
the last and final stage in the evolution of man.
There the mortal rises to become immortal. Death
has no more stings for him - beyond death, beyond
birth, beyond maddening cruelties of dharma and
adharma, pleasure and pain, heat and cold, success
and failure, love and hatred. The sadhaka drops
his deluded conception "I am a man, devotee", and
realizes, remembers - I am He (Nitya-muktachinmayoham!)
.
The Goddess of Jnana is Devi, Mother
Sarasvati. Her veena is tuned within when the heart
strings are polished off it's clogs - the asuric
sampatti, non-divine traits. In the resulting peace,
the bhakta sees his Lord in the peaceful, purified
within. The soft floating tunes waft from within as
the Lady of the veena passes Her tender fingers
blessingly over thy heart-strings. The Siva bhakta
melts in that music of the within and becomes one
with Siva!
Thus in nine days, in three stages, even the
ignorant is made to go through the right invocations
in their required sequences of worship, and on the
tenth day, make a huge bonfire of the devil, the
samsarin in me - the mortal, who dreamt, and wept
his dreams.
(Excerpts from a letter written by Swami
Chinmayananda to Sri. P.B. Menon and
published in "Glory of the Mother" by Central
Chinmaya Mission Trust, Bombay.)

Significance of Holi
Holi is considered as second biggest festival
on Hindu calendar after Diwali. Holi is also known
as festival of Colors. The festival has deep spiritual
and philosophical significance. So don't reduce it
to mere colours. For most of us, Holi has always
been about fun, frivolity and colours. Very few
know that like all other festivals, Holi too has a
great spiritual-cum-philosophical significance.
Holi is a festival which signifies the win of good
over evil. Ever since the beginning, the good and
the evil have fought for supremacy. Evil has always
tried to curb the goodness. No matter how hard the
evil may try, truth possesses an innate quality to
come out shinning as does the gold from the test
of fire.
We all know the story of Hiranyakashyap and
his son Prahalad and how he tried to kill Prahalad
with the help of his sister Holika. Since then, the
ritual of burning woods to mark the occasion has
continued. On the occasion of Holi, however, we
should not only burn the woods, but also annihilate
our negative traits. We should commit ourselves
to lead the life as has taught to us by various saints
and mystics. We should get rid of hatred, deceit,
dishonesty and discrimination from our lives and
come out pure.
The colours of Holi create multi-coloured
designs on our clothes. We do not try to change
the design, but accept whatever comes our way with
delight and joy. Similarly, let us take this as a
message to love and accept each other. If we are
married, we should stop trying to fight with each
other but accept each other in love. The festival of
Holi should make us introspect and commit
ourselves to burn all our vices and come out pure
and energised. Also, we must try and accept others
as they are and appreciate the goodness of the other,
hence contributing in love, peace and harmony
among all.

Significance of Holika Dahan Timing

According to Hindu scriptures Holika Dahan,
which is also known as Holika Deepak or Chhoti
Holi, should be done during Pradosh Kaal (which
starts after sunset) while Purnimasi Tithi is
prevailing. Bhadra prevails during first half of
Purnimasi Tithi and all good work should be
avoided when Bhadra prevails. If Bhadra prevails
during Pradosh but it ends before midnight then
Holika Dahan should be done after Bhadra is over.
If Bhadra is getting over after midnight then only
Holika Dahan should be done in Bhadra and
preferably during Bhadra Punchha. However one
should avoid Bhadra Mukha and in no condition
Holika Dahan should be done in Bhadra Mukha.
Doing so brings bad luck for the whole year not
only for individuals but for whole city and country.
Many times Bhadra Punchha is not available
between Pradosh and midnight. In such situations
one should do Holika Dahan during Pradosh. In
rare occasions when neither Pradosh nor Bhadra
Punchha is available then one should do Holika
Dahan after Pradosh. Choosing right Muhurta for
Holika Dahan is more important than choosing
right Muhurta for any other festivals. For other
festivals doing puja at wrong time will not bring
puja benefits but doing Holika Dahan at wrong time
would bring suffering and misfortune. Holika
Dahan is referred to Kama Dahanam in South
India.

5 HEALTHY HABITS THAT CAN ACTUALLY BE HARMFUL

As members of the modern, globalized
society, we are continuously exposed to a variety
of magazine articles, television and radio shows
and other forms of online media that bombard and
often confuse us with contradictory information.
One research report negates what another
confirmed to be proven true, leaving us in quite a
quandary as we seek to form and follow healthy
habits. Now, we see what Ayurveda says:
Ayurveda is a Time-Tested Science
Ayurveda, India's ancient medical system has
been around for 5,000 years, proving as effective
today as it was thousands of years ago. The reason
many of us may not have heard of it is because
Ayurveda was banned for many years by the British
colonists.
Ayurveda's time-tested health-promoting
wisdom sheds light on why the following habits
touted by modern media as healthy can actually
harm us.
Drink Eight Glasses of Water Daily
Ayurveda teaches us to only drink water (or
any other liquid, for that matter) when we are
thirsty-but not otherwise. Excess water intake
(which occurs when we drink beyond our thirst
level) is, in fact, a causative factor for obesity, skin
problems, digestive, and many other health
challenges. If you're actually thirsty enough to
drink 8 glasses, do so. If not, don't.
Make Breakfast Your Biggest Meal
We learn as part of Ayurveda's prescribed
daily routine (called Dinacharya) the importance
of eating lighter at breakfast and dinner, and eating
the most quantity at lunchtime instead. The reason
for this is that Ayurveda follows a natural circadian
rhythm. We are solar powered creatures, and so
we must follow the sun's course in our daily lives
to be abidingly health. We have our greatest
digestive capacity at the time of day when the sun
has fully risen, which happens between 12-1 p.m.,
the time Ayurveda recommends we eat a large
lunch. Having grown up eating larger breakfasts
and dinners, my health and digestion definitely
thank me now for making lunch my heaviest meal.

,LVkseSfVDl

Avoid Fat Intake

As a society that has unprecedented rates of
obesity, it is very easy to want to practice avoiding
fat consumption altogether. Modern western and
ancient Ayurvedic medicine both agree that we
actually do need some fat to be healthy, regardless
of how obese we may be-it just must be the right
kind of fat. The fat derived from ghee (clarified
butter), mustard and coconut oils, nuts and
avocados is considered healthy. What Ayurveda
additionally teaches, however, is that these fats can
only increase your health to the extent that you
can digest them.
Make Up For Lost Sleep on Weekends
There is this idea that we can accumulate sleep
debt during the work week and repay it over the
weekend by sleeping in. Having once heavily
subscribed to this belief, I now strive to maintain a
regular sleep pattern, as good sleep habits are
considered one of the three pillars of health,
according to Ayurveda. Try sleeping by 10:30 p.m.
at the latest and awakening no later than 6 a.m.
regularly and you, too, will feel the difference.
Exercise Vigorously Daily, No Matter What
I will proudly raise my hand to tell you I fell
(hard) for this so-called healthy habit, too, and
suffered from all sorts of aches, pains, and cracking
joints as a result. There is no one-size-fits-all
prescription for exercise in Ayurveda-how much,
how long, what kind, when, as well as our own
individual strength are all factors that play
important roles in determining our ideal exercise
habits. A woman should never exercise during her
menstrual cycle and exercise is also contraindicated
when we are ill, infirm, or already completely
exhausted from excess travel, work, study, etc.
Ayurveda's seasonal wisdom teaches us that
we can exercise more vigorously in the winter and
spring months, as we feel physically stronger
during these times. The heat and dryness of summer
and early fall cause very vigorous exercise to
deplete and exhaust us; a gentler routine is
recommended at this time.
