The Slocan Lake Stewardship Society is offering three family

oriented nature programs in August to explore different habitats within the Slocan Lake watershed. Each day will have local
naturalists and scientists on tap to make the day interesting.
The first program, Lakeshore Labyrinth was held on
Saturday, August 6. We hope you enjoyed the day! The
second program, Creatures Big and Small will take place
on Saturday, August 13. Well explore the Bear and Fish
lakes pass along Highway 31A and discover fascinating
facts about bears, toads, insects and plants from local scientists Wayne McCrory, Marcy Mahr and Daniel Hellyer.
The meeting place is at Fish Lake Rest Area. This event is

The West Kootenay Kennel Club is hosting their 42nd

annual All Breed Championship Dog Show, Obedience
and Rally Obedience trials. The show will be held at the
Kinnaird Park Community Church field (the old Kinnaird
Middle School) in Castlegar on August 19, 20 and 21.
Four all breed shows will start Friday, August 19 running
through to Sunday August 21. There will be two shows Friday, the first starting at 8 am, the second starting at 1 pm.
Saturday and Sunday there will be one show per day starting at 8 am. Four obedience and four rally obedience trials
will be held Saturday and Sunday starting at 8 am. Saturday
evening will be our famous bring your own meat BBQ. Many
raffle prizes and silent auction items will be offered throughout the shows and will be given out at the BBQ.
The public is invited to come out and watch the dogs
working. Lets all cheer on the junior handlers! There is
no charge for spectators. The BBQ bus concession will be
on site all weekend. Please leave your pets at home where
they will be comfortable from the heat. Only dogs entered
in the shows will be allowed on the grounds.

Committee July 2016 meeting:

The Village website (kaslo.ca) has minutes of Health Select Committee meetings,
objectives and other information from the
Health Select Committee.
The Telehealth service at the Primary
Health Centre is up and running. Primary
Health nurse Georgie Humphries reports
that the project manager, Mona Mattei
from Shared Care Initiatives, recently
visited with the Primary Health Care Team
to discuss the many possibilities of the
Telehealth services. Options at this point
include Urology, General Surgery and
Pre-operative screening, with others
expected in the fall.
Discussions are continuing between the
doctors and IHA regarding providing primary care service and urgent care during
the hours of 9 to 5, 7 days a week.
Improvements are planned to the public
bus schedule which will enable residents
to have more options to access medical
appointments in Nelson and Trail. We will
see another days service from Kaslo, fewer
bus transfers en route to Trail, and better
timing for appointments and return trips.
The RDCK has endorsed these changes but
is awaiting approval from BC Transit.
Community Paramedicine will provide
primary care services in clients homes in
our area, working in partnership with local
health providers on identified needs. The
application process will soon be offered to
paramedics who are IV endorsed and employed by BC Emergency Health Services
(BCEHS). The program is anticipated to be
up and running in Kaslo by January 2017.

A more wholesome camping cookout
Are you one of those adventurous British
Columbians who proudly say camping is
the highlight of your summer? You may
spend hours planning where to go and
what to do but dont forget to also plan
what to eat once you get there! Without
proper refrigeration, it can be easy to
choose convenient processed foods of little
nutritional value. A little creative planning
will go a long way to provide both the
nutrition you need as well as a delicious
meal the whole family will enjoy.
Vegetables and even fruit are often forgotten when packing for a weekend away.
They should not to be overlooked though,
because the fibre, vitamins and minerals

provided by these foods will keep your
digestive system and entire body happy.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are easy to
bring along especially if you have refrigeration or a cooler. Packing them uncut in
plastic containers helps prevent bruising
and spoiling, and a moistened paper towel
will keep greens fresh longer. Vegetables
that start to spoil are safe to cook and eat,
just remove the worst parts.
For dessert, bake fruit in the coals with
spices or dip in marshmallow fluff and
roast over the open flame. Grill a banana in
aluminum foil with dark chocolate, almond
butter and coconut. Find other creative
ways to include fruits and vegetables in
a variety of meals and snacks throughout
the day.
Protein is another important source of
energy and provides building blocks for the
muscles you are using to swim, hike and
paddle. It is all too easy to choose proteins
high in salt, preservatives and saturated
fat. Start your day off right by including
protein to keep you fuller for longer. Here
are some breakfast ideas: yogurt or milk
with cereal and berries, eggs hardboiled
at home or nut butter spread on fruit,
crackers or toast.
For dinner consider bringing fillets or

ground meat that are frozen beforehand
to last longer. There are so many ways to
enjoy fresh meat, it can be pre-marinated,
made into kebabs or included in your
favourite one pot meal. Later in your
camping trip you may have to depend on
protein from canned beans or dehydrated
meals instead.
Finally, choose quality grains to provide
fuel for your brain and essential B vitamins
and minerals like iron and magnesium.
Whole grains low in salt, sugar and fat
are the best options. Try oatmeal or whole
wheat bannock at breakfast, pitas or wraps
at lunch or make a whole grain salad like
tabbouleh to include with dinner. Add whole
grain cereal or popcorn to your favourite
trail mix, for a little something different.
As in any area of life, the key is to find a
balance that works for you. The next time
you go to explore the beautiful outdoors
find a good balance between enjoyment
and healthy nourishment. You may even
decide to take it all the way and live off the
land like our hunter-gatherer ancestors
just dont forget your fishing rod!

Nakusp Landfill Evolves ka
Improvements are coming to thed
Nakusp Landfill this summer, as the
RDCK installs a new weigh scale and
develops a new public drop-off recycling facility.
Currently at the Nakusp, facility
tipping fees are charged on the basis
of the volume of waste delivered.
Installation of the scale will allow the
RDCK to implement weight-based
charges which are considered to be
more fair to customers and will align
the Nakusp Landfill with industry
best practices.

cancer.
Over $2700 was raised on the
August long weekend by using
Dunkaroo, the Wet N Wild Dunk
Tank. For four hours, eighteen Dunkees took the softballs in good spirit
and the throwers had a great time
dunking everyone several times.

There once was a little glacier

fed lake, minding its own business in the Panorama mountain
range high above Invermere BC.
Molson Canadian Brewing Co.
had the brilliant idea of clearing
the snow off Shamrock Lake and
having a hockey game there
shoot a few commercials #AnythingForHockey oh so Canadian, lucky for us! When they
finished shooting the commercial
the Heli-skiing outfit that transported the crew up and down
the mountain decided to open
it up to the public 22 skaters
at a time = two teams of 10 plus
a goalie each weather permitting of course. Eric Mathews
(the helicopter pilot) home rink
is Kaslo, where he plays Satur-
day nights with a group of really good guys. Hockey culture

is very strong in this Kaslo rink.
When offered the chance, each
player that could, paid for his
seat the chopper was full in no
time. One of the players, RCMP
corporal Sean Begg from Kaslo,
thought a photo of himself in his
serge on a glacier might make a
great Christmas card and so
with permission from his superiors he packed it along and at
intermission donned it and skated, while his teammates took
photos. From those photos came
the Goalie and the Mountie
coined by CBC.ca as The Most
Canadian Photo, Ever.

Recovery Committee. The project will also help the
RDCK to reach its zero waste goals.
The construction contract has been awarded to KNC
Construction Ltd. of Nakusp. Construction is anticipated to
start August 9 with an estimated project duration of eight to
ten weeks. The Nakusp Landfill will remain open throughout the construction period and minimal disruption to the
public is expected. A one day closure of the site may be
required in the late stages of the project. The RDCK will
provide advance notice should a site closure be required.

RDCK Areas E and F will be presenting draft Community
Wildfire Protection Plans. BC Parks will be presenting a
draft Wildfire Management Plan for West Arm Provincial
Park.
There are two public meetings. Please attend one.
Wednesday, August 17 at 6 pm to 8:30 pm at the Nelson &
District Chamber of Commerce and Thursday, August 18
at 6 pm to 8:30 pm at Redfish Elementary School.
The format is an open house followed by brief a presentation and opportunities for questions. Specific objectives
of this public meeting are to explain:
What local government is doing with Community Wildfire Protection Plans
What BC Parks is doing with its Wildfire Management
Plan
How the risks from wildfire to residences and critical
infrastructure are identified
