Radiography is a useful non-destructive evaluation tool but has health risks from radiation exposure. Exposure can cause health effects from either long or short term exposure. Industrial radiographers must understand radiation exposure risks and how to limit it through increasing distance from the source, spending less time near it, and using effective shielding materials. This study compares three materials - fly ash, fire brick, and hollow blocks - to determine the most cost-effective for radiation shielding by analyzing their ability to reduce the half-value layer, with the findings suggesting fly ash is the best option.

Radiography is an important tool in non-destructive evaluation. The method
offers a number of advantages over other NDE methods, but one of its disadvantages is the health risk associated with the radiation. Health effects can occur due to either long-term low level exposure or short-term high level exposure. There are many sources of harmful, high energy radiation. Industrial radiographers are mainly concerned with exposure from x-ray generators and radioactive isotopes. It is important to understand that eighty per cent of human exposure comes from natural sources such as outer space, rocks and soil, radon gas, and the human body. The remaining twenty per cent comes from man-made radiation sources, such as those used in medical and dental diagnostic procedures. Hence we cannot able to prevent Radiation from entering into our body but we can control it by three methods i) spending Less time with the source ii) By increasing the distance between the source and observer and iii) By effective Shielding. Therefore, In order to reach the safety limits we are using HVL as a shielding Material. By this project we are comparing three materials HVL namely Fly Ash, Fire Brick, and Hollow Block. Among these three Materials we are analysing which is best for Radiation Shielding and Cost Effective. By Comparison we found out Fly Ash is Cost Effective and best suited for Radiation Shielding as number of HVL is reduced.
