SCP is an excessive casing pressure in the wells that persistently rebuilds after bleed-down

procedures are conducted. Cracks and fissures develop in the annular cement due to a number of
factors, providing a path for high-pressure fluids to migrate from deeper strata to low-pressure
strata or to the surface. If left uncontrolled, SCP represents an ongoing safety hazard and can
cause serious and immediate harm or damage to human life, the marine and coastal environment,
and property. (David W. Rusch, Fred Sabins and John Aslakson. 2004). Once a leak path is
established and there is a pressure difference, nature will try to equalize the pressure. SCP may
be hard to remove because of the fluid that is constantly migrating from the source. This situation
can often be controlled by surveillance and regularly bleedoff operations. The symptoms may be
removed for a while, but pressure will usually rebuild. How fast the pressure rebuilds depends on
the pressure difference and the size of the leak path.
