Continuous writing argumentative essay

Co-curricular activities are a waste of time and money. Do you agree?

Co-curricular activities are activities that are planned for students after school through
clubs and uniformed societies. Students are requires to join at least one uniformed unit and a
club. In my opinion, these activities play an important role in a students life and they are not a
waste of time and money.
First and foremost, co-curricular activities provide a meaningful experience for students to
learn about themselves, other people and the community through the various activities
organized such as camping, school trips, games, project work and campaigns. For example, when
students go on a study tour, they are given a chance to encounter situations and opportunities in
the real world, beyond the school gate.
Apart from that, co-curricular activities provide students with a chance to develop other
aspects such a music, sports and other living skills. Some students are unable to shine in the
classroom but they are superb athletes and musicians. Co-curricular activities help these
students to become fulfilled individuals.
Besides that, these activities provide leadership training for students. They get a chance
to learn how to lead a team. They learn organizational skills such as planning, budgeting and
problem-solving, all of which the classroom situation may be unable to provide. They also learn
discipline and co-operation, tolerance and understanding.
In addition, co-curricular activities provide an outlet for students to rest and relax after a
hard days work. Students get to play, laugh and release their tension through the various club
activities held, such as quizzes, treasure hunts and various games. For those who do not like
outdoor games, they can always join a chess club or a cookery club. For the active and restless,
they can join the football club or the netball club.
In conclusion, co-curricular activities certainly play an important role in a students life.
They complement the activities of the classroom. A well-planned co-curricular programme helps
students become wholesome individuals. Thus, co-curricular activities are definitely not a
waste of time and money.
Directed writing report
Write a report to the Principal and give reasons for the lack of interest in sports and
provide suggestions to overcome the problem.
To: The Principal of Sekolah Menengah kebangsaan Bahagia
A report on the Lack of Interest in Sports Among the Students of SMK Bahagia
Recently, a survey has been conducted among the students of SMK Bahagia. The results of
the survey show that among 2000 students from Form One to Form Five, only 200 would choose
sports as their preferred leisure activity during their spare time. That number is only 10% of the
student population.
Among the reasons cited by the 1800 students who did not choose sports as their
preferred activity is their own attitude towards sports. Many of them assume playing sports
involves getting hot, dirty and sweaty. The students also complained about their lack of time.
Many of them commented that this was caused by the longer school hours. The students also
complained about parental factors. According to them, their parents place an excessive amount
of attention on academic work. With their parents sending them for tuition classes, workshops
and seminars at every possible opportunity, it has become very difficult for them to make time
for leisure, let alone sports.
Due to the overwhelming lack of interest in sports among the students, a few suggestions
have been formulated for consideration. Firstly, the school authorities should stress the
importance of sports to the students. The message would have much greater impact on the
students if delivered by a person in authority.
Moreover, the school authorities could hold a dialogue with the parents during the next
parent teacher Association meeting. During the dialogue, the school authorities could explain to
the parents about the importance of a balanced life for the students through sports.
On top of that, the school could improve the sporting facilities for the students and employ
qualified trainers. Both steps would go a long way towards attracting the interest of the students
to get involved in sports. The presence of the trainers would be an added bonus for the students
because they could receive proper training on the rules and regulations in sports.

Lastly but least, the school authorities could organize more competitions related to sports
and offer attractive prizes to the winners. This would act as an incentive for students who have
talent in sports to come forth and complete.
