Credentialing Information:
Health Care Support Program Standard:
A qualified faculty member in Health Care Support meets all three of the following criteria:
1. Possesses an earned baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution;
and
2. Has a minimum of 2 years directly related work experience; and
3. Holds certification or licensure in a health care discipline involving provision of direct patient
care.
HLHS 100 and 101Course Standard:
A qualified faculty member teaching HLHS 100 or 101meets the course standard through one of
the following routes:
1. Meets the Health Care Support Program standard; or
2. Possesses an earned baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution
with a minimum of 2 years directly related work experience; or
3. Holds a current Workplace Specialist License granted by the Indiana Department of Education
in Health Occupations: Health Careers.
Indiana DOE Course Description:
Health Science Education I content includes skills common to specific health career topics such
as patient nursing care, dental care, animal care, medical laboratory, public health, an
introduction to health care systems, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Leadership
skills developed through HOSA participation are also included. Lab experiences are organized
and planned around the activities associated with the student's career objectives. Job seeking and

job maintenance skills, personal management skills, self-analysis to aid in career selection and
completion of the application process for admission into a post-secondary program of their
choice are also included in this course.
Ivy Tech Catalog Description:
Presents information on the health care system and employment opportunities at a variety of
entry levels. Includes an overview of health care development, how health delivery systems are
organized, legal and ethical considerations of health care delivery, and an overview of various
health care professions. Students are encouraged to explore health professions through
assignments, observations and interviews.
Ivy Tech Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
1. Describe how health care is developed, delivered and organized.
2. Discuss health care delivery systems and trends.
3. Identify ethical and legal issues in health care.
4. Apply basic medical terminology principles.
5. Identify the basic organization of the human body, the body systems, and the stages
of growth and development.
6. Analyze behaviors for success in the health care field, including lifestyles
management, professionalism, and lifelong learning.
7. Describe personal and workplace safety measures including body mechanics,
infection control, and environmental safety.
8. Discuss principles of communication in a health care setting including treating the
patient with respect as an individual, accommodation of cultural diversity, identifying
and providing for patient needs.
9. Identify the purposes and procedures for medical documentation.
10. Compare various health care occupations, including education requirements,
Credentialing or licensing, scope of practice, and workforce data.

Makeups/Late Submittals:
If the student has an excused absence, they must submit the assignment(s) upon returning to
school. Unexcused absent assignments will only be accepted with express consent from the
instructor with a 5% point reduction. If an assignment is turned in late, the points will be
reduced by 5% each day it is late.
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend class. Excessive absences can impact the grade a student
receives since this is an interactive/hands-on course.
