Absenteeism and low academic performance of students: Basis for class

interventions
Bonaoy, Edgardo A.
O-Maa
This study is focused on the DepEd program, which helped realize-Education for all; in
which every teacher must take priority to education and promote holistic development
among the learners in accordance with the Article XIV of the Philippine Constitution. It
tries to seek for reasons why students prefer to skip from attending classes or be absent
which causes them to drop-out. It was observed that low-performance is the possible
reason why such behavior is manifested. Respondents of this research are all Fourth
Year learners of Libhu National High School. Three major problems were identified:
family, school and community. Data were gathered, tallied, tabulated and analyzed to
answer the problem. Results of the study show that most of the boys have higher rate of
absences compared to girls. Most of them come from family of low economic status and
parent who have not support their students of their needs, enhance their knowledge of
responsible parenthood and intensify their linkage to agencies that can provide them
financial support.
Active and traditional learning strategies in teaching team sports to physical
education students
Abordo, Nelsie T.
P-Tac
This experimental study compared the effectiveness of two groups of strategies; the
traditional instructional methods which include lecture method, demonstration,
individual exercises; and the active learning strategies which include collaborative
learning, reaction to a video, and generating questions in teaching team sports. The
study was conducted in San Jose National High School and employed 100 third year
students divided equally into two groups; the control group who were taught with the
traditional instruction, and the experimental group who were taught with the active
learning strategies. The control group had a generally fair performance in the pretest
as manifested by the overall mean percentage score of 36.3; and a very satisfactory
performance in the posttest as evidenced by the overall mean percentage score of 62.6.
On the other hand, the control had an overall mean percentage score of 36.9 which was
considered as fair performance, and an overall mean percentage score of 84.9 in the
posttest which was interpreted as outstanding performance. There was a significant
difference at the .01 alpha level between the pretest mean score (10.88) and posttest
mean score (18.78) in the control group as proven by the test statistic value of 25.786 (p
-value=.000). There was also a significant difference at .01 alpha level between the
pretest mean score (11.06) and posttest mean score (25.48) of the experimental group as
proven by the test statistic value of 11.258 (p-value=.000). Thus, it was concluded that
both traditional instructional methods and active learning strategies were effective in
teaching team sports. There was also significant difference at .01 alpha level of the
control group posttest mean score (18.78) and the experimental group posttest mean
2

score (25.48) as substantiated by the test statistic value of 8.531(p-value = .000). Thus,
it was concluded that the experimental group was more effective in teaching team sports
to Third Year students.
Audio-visual and traditional methods of teaching social studies
Pangilinan, Joel R.
P-Eas
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of audio-visual method of teaching
Social Studies among the Grade 9 student of Dolores National High School during
school year 2014-2015. Pretest-Posttest Experimental Design was used in the study. It
followed the static group comparison design of conducting experimental research. To
gather the needed data, two groups of Grade 9 students were used to undertake onemonth experiment and were made to answer the Achievement Test. Data were subjected
to statistical analysis such as the mean percentage, t-test, and standard deviation. The
pretest mean value of the control group proved that the students were exposed to
traditional method of teaching. On the contrary, the posttest mean value of the student
taught using the audio-visual method significantly had higher result that the student
taught in traditional method. Generally, the test results revealed that the audio-visual
method of teaching is more effective than the traditional method of teaching Social
Studies. Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the following
recommendations are offered: Additional Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) in some
areas in Social Studies could be constructed and utilized in some classes. SIM in A ng
Daigdig sa Klasikal at Transisyunal na Panahon can be used by other schools to
confirm its effectiveness and maximum in the future. SIM aided instruction in some
learning areas may be conducted by future researchers. Curriculum planners and policy
makers of the Department of Education (DepEd) may realize the importance and
effectiveness of audio-visual aids and can make it a part of the teacher education
programs so that teachers are trained in proper use of audio- visual materials. This
research article opened new horizons for other researchers to study the importance and
use of audio-visual method of teaching on other subjects of the curricula taught
different levels of education.
Best practices in instructional leadership of secondary school administrators: The
Samar island experience
Irene, Maricres O.
O-Sam
This study investigated the extent to which the standard of best practices in instructional
leadership of the secondary school administrators in the island of Samar were practiced
by the school administrators that serve as guide for the administrators school
performance. The study employed descriptive case study research with the used of
quantitative and qualitative approach. In gathering data, triangulation was used in order
to cross-examine the information gathered from the respondents. Participants involved
in the study were 30 school administrators and 933 teachers among the top performing
schools in the island of Samar and total enumeration was used in selecting the
participants involved in the study. It was concluded that school administrators tend to
practice always the standard best practices along the five categories such as clarifying a
vision, creating a healthy school environment, cultivating leadership in others,
improving instruction and managing people, data and process. It was also recommended
that school administrators as instructional leaders should evaluate the mastery
competency of teachers that being taught in the classroom in order to increase the NAT
results. (2) Send teachers in national and regional trainings, (3) Foster students school
connectedness to improve academic achievements. (4) Encourage female teachers to
practice more on creating a healthy school environment, cultivating leadership in others,
improving instruction, and managing people, data and process. (5) A sequel study may
be conducted to verify and validate the findings of the study.

Causes and structural effects of student absenteeism among the grade 7 students of
Manhilo National High School
Tomon, Maria S.
P-Maa
The aim of the study was to investigate the extent of student absenteeism in selected
Grade 7 students of Manhilo National High School, explore the reasons why student
absent themselves from classes and examine the implications of student absenteeism.
The study adopted the mixed methodology and used a survey research design as the
operational framework for data gathering. Data were collected by self-administered
questionnaires and interviews with one hundred twenty students of Grade 7. The study
revealed that student absenteeism is rampant in school under study due to reasons such
as: lack of subject interest, poor teaching strategies by lecturers, unfavorable learning
environment, too much socialization, and part-time jobs to grant by various sponsors
and poor relations with the lecturers. The study also found an inverse relationship
between student absenteeism and academic performance.

Computer-aided modular instructions in problem solving

Villar, Ariel G.
O-Cal
This study is an experimental design which essentially needed to compare the
effectiveness of Computer-Aided Modular Instruction (CAMI) with the Traditional
Method of teaching word problem involving fractions to the grade 6 pupils of Gadgaran
Integrated School, Calbayog City during the school year 2014-2015. CAMI is teaching
technique that enable pupils interact with the computer programmed lesson give to the
experimental group. The Traditional Method on the other hand, is a usual lecturediscussion given to the control group. The grade 6 pupils were chosen as the subject of
the study. Their average grade is approaching proficiency level in Mathematics during
the first grading period both of experimental and control group. They were randomly
assigned and chosen using odd or even technique. The instrument and the content topics
used in Computer Aided Modules in this study were researchers made and were
carefully checked and validated by the Mathematics teachers of Calbayog IV District,
Division of Calbayog City, Calbayog City. The evaluation survey questionnaire on
pupils difficulties, reactions and attitudes towards CAMI was adapted and revised from
the study of Saldaa on SIM-Based Instruction. Mean percentage gain, standard
deviation, and t-test for uncorrelated means were the statistical tools used in this study
to treat, analyze, and interpret the gathered data. The result have significant mean
difference in the pre-test and post-test scores but have no significant mean difference in
the mean percentage gain of scores. It is revealed in the result shown in the table 19 that
the CAMI and the Conventional Method of Instruction resulted for the same level of
achievement for the pupils with slight challenges on the part of pupils and facility in
teaching of the teachers. It was recommended on the implementation and adaptation of
this strategy into the classroom utilizing CAMI in enhancing the better-learning output.
DepEd-based performance indicators as predictive measures of school
effectiveness and reaction of principals and teachers
Tobise, Juliet B.
P-Bay
The research was conducted at five selected schools in Baybay II District, Baybay City,
Leyte namely: Villa Elementary School, and San Juan Elementary School for school
year 2014-2015 with five (5) administrators and thirty (30) teachers as respondents.
This study aims to identify and compare the levels of the school effectiveness by using
the performance indicators of DepEd. The Overall Category Level of Effectiveness on
each respondent school are as follows: Banahao Elementary School fall under Category
A; Palhi Elementary School and Hipusngo Elementary School Category B; while San
Juan Elementary School and Villa Elementary School fall under Category C. the
respondent schools were furnished with the results of their performance indicators to
4

determine their reactions. There was a positive reaction of respondent schools which got
a high category level of effectiveness like Banahao Elementary School which has Rank
1 Category A, Highest Achiever. On the other hand, negative reaction comes from
those respondent schools with a low category level of effectiveness like San Juan
Elementary School with Rank 4 Category C, Low Achiever and Villa Elementary
School with Rank 5 Category C, Low Achiever. The two respondent schools namely;
Palhi Elementary School, Rank 2 Category B, Average Achiever and Hipusngo
Elementary School, Rank 3 Category B, Average Achiever, have an average level of
school effectiveness, giving reactions on being comfortable, anxious and fearful. The
DepEd-based Performance Indicators can be used as basis to measure school
effectiveness of other School Districts, which are not respondent schools of this study.
By doing so, their level of effectiveness could be determined.

central elementary schools in the division of Eastern Samar
Gelina, Remalyn C.
P-Eas
This study aimed to determine the relationship between the early childhood
development and the school readiness of Grade 1 pupils among central elementary
schools in the Division of Eastern Samar. A descriptive-correlational design was used in
this study. This study was conducted in selected central elementary schools of the
Division of Eastern Samar. The subjects of the were selected 804 grade 1 pupils among
selected central elementary schools of the Division of Eastern Samar together with
twenty-eight (28) teachers who handled them in early childhood development especially
those who have undergone center based training on early child development and the 33
teachers in grade 1 classes were the respondents of the study. Percentage and weighted
mean were computed for the primary data. To test the first null hypothesis, the
Cramers V Coefficient correlation was computed and linear regression analysis was
computed to test the second null hypothesis. The level of significance was set at .05
level of significance for rejecting and accepting the null hypothesis. Based on the
results and findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: The Grade 1
pupils among central elementary schools among central elementary schools of the
Division of Eastern Samar have an ideal and appropriate age for their Grade level, are
mostly females, spoke Waray-Waray at home, and preferred Filipino as their mass
media channel. Large number of Grade 1 central elementary pupils in the Division of
Eastern Samar manifested on readiness for school which means that most of them
benefited greatly from more diversified teaching approaches incorporating different
teaching techniques in the early childhood development program. Books read by pupils
and Filipino channels they used to view at home are contributory to the school readiness
of pupils. Quality of early childhood development centers and other institutions aids and
facilitates the child learning. When children are exposed to early childhood education,
they develop superior communication skills, necessary physical ability and social unity
needed in adult life and an increased cognitive and affective educational balance.
Effects of explicit teaching to the pupils performance in mathematics of grade 2
pupils
Aroza, Edelina A.
P-Cat
This action-research found out the effectiveness of explicit instruction in teaching
Mathematics to Grade 2 Special Science Elementary School pupils of Catbalogan III
Central Elementary School during School year 2014-2015. It tries to find out which of
the given activities effected higher performance levels and which enticed majority of
learners to be actively engaged from beginning up the last minute of every Math
session. Activities include the user of games, collaborative work and explicit discussion
of how the answers were derived in every activity given. Pupils were given more time
5

to talk than the teacher to feel the pleasure of explaining how they got their answers.
The study used purposive sampling using the grade 2 SSES enrolled during School
Year 2014-2015. Checklists, summary sheets and questionnaire were used to gather
information from the students. The questionnaire has 3 parts. Part I elicits data about the
pupils profile. Part II dealt about how they go about answering assignments at home
and Part III asked data on what extent parents or significant others help in
accomplishing Math assignments/activities. List of action steps was prepared to guide
the action-researcher in the implementation of the planned interventions at specified
time and date. Results showed that teaching the fundamental operations before
introducing problem solving helped condition the pupils to love and enjoy the lessons
presented in increasing order of difficulty. Results likewise indicated that interventions
led to improvements in mathematics achievement of pupils who previously experience
mathematics difficulty through the following: (1) Providing clear and specific examples
to concretize abstract concepts; (2) Providing feedback to parents on their childrens
successes; (3) Using principles of explicit instruction in teaching concepts and
procedures. 27 pupils out of 35 pupils progressed in solving Math activities after they
are taught the fundamentals operations before introducing every new lesson especially
on problem solving, which implies that explicit instruction is still best in teaching
especially in grade schools.
Effect of video-assisted instruction in four competencies, to the performance of
grade 8 science students of Maasin Vocational High School
Sabandal, Diana D.
P-Maa
The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference in the
MPS of the students exposed to video-assisted Grade 8 Science instruction on four
competencies of Maason Vocational High School. Eighty students were the respondents
of the study. Section Rizal, comprised of 47 learners served as experimental group
while 37 from Section Bonifacio was the control. Two types of 3-5 minute videos were
supplemented in lectures to the experimental group. The difference in the MPS between
the pretest and post test revealed that, although; the experimental group seemed to have
greater difference posttest and pretest. However, the apparent gain was not significant
according to the z test. Nevertheless, more attentive students were observed during
video sessions. It was also discovered that animated videos are more preferred by the
learners over the lecture type. The author recommends the practice of video
supplementation as well as further similar study to younger learners.

proposed training program
Semillano, Joel S.
P-Orm
The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Mnemonics as an alternative strategy
in teaching Chemistry among secondary students of Linao National High School,
Ormoc City, Leyte as basis for a proposed Training Program for Chemistry teachers
This study made use of the an experimental research design that ascertains the
betterment of the proposal, in which two groups of 30 respondents chosen were given
pre-tests, treatment, and then post-tests. The selection of the respondents were drawn by
lot using purposive random sampling, and must be currently enrolled in the school
7

taking the subject Chemistry. The statistical tools used in analyzing data included
arithmetic mean and t-tests for independent and dependent samples and sample mean.
The researcher established two groups of students wherein, one group will serve as a
control and the other for experimental and would be serve with treatment. Topic of
interest from the subject chemistry will be administered to the students pretest and
posttest. The test will be extracted from the standardized Government examinations
particularly in NCAE. Respondents on the experimental group were administered with a
lecture on the use of mnemonics and an activity on constructing their own mnemonics.
Survey questionnaires were given to the respondent to assess their opinion regarding the
use of alternative strategy which focused on the three aspects of learning formulated by
Bloom, namely the cognitive, affective and the psychomotor. Questionnaires were
retrieve right after the session and results were tabulated. The result of the two groups
were treated statistically using t-test as test statistic and the result showed that there is a
significant difference between the two at 0.05 level of significance.
Effectiveness of peer tutoring in mathematics among selected grade 7 students:
Proposed approach
Labaniego, Emma V.
P-Orm
The main purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of peer tutoring on
selected topics in Grade 7 Mathematics among selected Grade 7 students in New Ormoc
City National High School, Ormoc City for school year 2015-2016. The study
employed the quasi-experimental type of research where the participants were selected
by universal sampling method. The data were gathered using two instruments for this
study: the Pre-test and Post-test score sheets of Grade 7 students on selected topics in
Grade 7 Mathematics before and after the implementation of peer tutoring where the
questionnaire used was validated by the division supervisor. These data were treated
and analyzed using the Simple Percentage (P), Weighted Mean (WM) and t-test
measure for mean difference (t). The data on the pre-test and post-test performances of
Grade 7 students on selected topics in Grade 7 mathematics show that the slight
increase in the scores of control group can be due to the over familiarization to the test
material utilized during the pre and post-tests. The data on the pre and post-test scores
of experimental group show a dramatic increase in the scores that can be attributed to
the implementation of peer tutoring on selected topics in Grade 7 Mathematics. As the
variance in the within groups pre and post-test performance on selected topics in Grade
7 Mathematics, the result shows that there was a slight increase in the control groups
post-test that can be due to the over familiarization to the test material utilized during
the tests. However, experimental groups pre and post-test scores show that there was a
significant increase that can be attributed to the implementation of peer tutoring on
selected topics in Grade 7 Mathematics. As the variance in between groups pre and
post-test performance on selected topics in Grade 7 Mathematics, control and
experimental groups pre-test performance show that there was no significant difference
in scores. However, post-test scores of control and experimental group show that there
was a significant difference that can be attributed to the implementation of peer tutoring
on selected topics in the teaching-learning environment.

Enhancing K to 12 educational leadership through multi-rater feedback approach
Ang, Jason V.
O-Bil*
This study highlights the application of descriptive quantitative research design in
ascertaining the leadership manifestations using multi-rater feedback approach to
improve work performance of administrators in school. It presents the respondents
demographic profile; determine perceptions of the immediate superior, subordinates,
and other stakeholders; appraise difference in respondents perceptions; and a design a
leadership development plan for enhanced leadership behaviors. Data analysis in this
action research revealed that the assessments of the department heads performance
from different dimensions as those perceived by the principal, teachers and nonteaching personnel, and students and parents do not significantly differ. As such, the
multi-rater feedback approach essentially evaluates school governance, and enhances
employees performance as it provides a more valid and realistic information on
potential incongruities between current performance levels and actual outcomes in the
pursuit of achieving organizational goals.
Fiscal management practice and level of compliance of public secondary school
heads
Dira, Luisito G.
P-Cal
The main purpose of this study was to find the level of fiscal management practices and
compliance to Commission on Audit (COA) Circular No. 97-002 by public secondary
school heads in the City Division of Calbayog. The study answered the specific
questions on the profile of the public secondary school heads in terms of age, gender,
position/designation, education attainment, length of experience as school head and
extent of relevant training attended; the level of management practices of public
secondary school heads as perceived by themselves and by their teachers in terms of
procurement of funds, financial planning and financial control; the significance
difference between the perception of public school heads and the perception of their
teachers as regards public secondary school heads level of fiscal management; the
significant relationship between public secondary school heads level of fiscal
management practices and their personal profile; the level of compliance of public
secondary school heads to the prescribed liquidation of cash advances pursuant to COA
Circular No. 97-00027; the significant relationship between the level of compliance of
public secondary school to the prescribe liquidation process of cash advances pursuant
to COA Circular No. 97-002 and their profile; the problems encountered by the public
secondary school heads in the fiscal management in their school and what programs of
activities can be proposed to enhance public secondary school heads competence in
fiscal management. The descriptive correlational method of research was used. The
data were subjected to statistical process that included data analysis and interpretation
of the data frequency counts, weight mean standard deviation, t-test and chi-square test.
The findings of the study showed that the school heads average age is 46.2 yrs. Old.
Majority are males that are holding the position of principal and teacher-in-charge. The
school heads possess very high experience as school head and moderate extent of
related training attended and they also possess moderate extent of related training
attended. The following conclusions were drawn that school heads perceive their level
of fiscal management practices in terms of procurement of funds, financial planning and
9

financial control higher than what their teachers perceived. Their age, gender, position/
designation, educational attainment, length of experience as school head and extent of
related training attended are not a factor to their level of fiscal management practice in
term of procurement of funds are factors to their level of fiscal management in term of
financial planning. However, their, age, gender, and education attainment are not.
School heads educational attainment and the extent of their related training attended
are factors to their level of fiscal management practices in term of financial control.
However, their age, gender and position / designation are not. They are not fully aware
of Commission on Audit (COA) Circular No. 97-002 particularly on compliance to the
policies on refund of cash advance and submission of list of expenses and liquidation
report. School heads extent of related training attended is a factor to their very high
compliance to COA Circular No. 97-002, however, their age, gender, position/
designation, education attainment and length of experience as school head are not a
factor. Based from the finding of the study, the following recommendations are offered:
that public secondary school heads in the Division of Calbayog City must at least earn
a Master degree and attend more seminar-workshops related to fiscal management
specifically on the aspects of financial planning and control. They must be re-oriented
with the policies of COA Circular No. 97-002 specifically on the aspect of return and
refund of cash advances and submission of list of expenses and liquidation of expenses.
The public secondary school heads must share best practices among themselves in order
for them to come up with effective strategies to generate funds for the school so that
they will able to augment their resources aside from the Monthly and other operating
expenses (MOOE). Finally, the researcher recommended that this seminar-workshop
training design be adopted by the City Division of Calbayog.
Improving students motivational level in science through culture-based lessons
Saldaa, Joy B.
O-Cal
This classroom-based action research determined if culture-based lessons can improve
motivational level of the students in science. Simple pre and post survey-questionnaire,
students perceptions questionnaire, and teachers direct observations were used to
record changes in the students motivational level. Motivation level in science can be
defined as the students degree of eagerness to participate in science activities in the
classroom. The respondents of the study were the fourth year Science, Technology and
Engineering (STE) A students of Calbayog City National High School, school year
2014-2015. The data from this study has indicated that there is an improvement in
students motivational level after the teacher delivered lessons in science using the
culture-based lessons. Furthermore, students perceptions on culture-based lessons were
found to be generally positive and useful. Teachers observation proved that there are
changes in the students participation, interest and enthusiasm in science. As such, the
teachers must incorporate local culture in their teaching, use local materials and local
human resources, and continue to grow and understand their own local culture and
support culture-based education. However, this action research provides only a snapshot
and thorough investigation is needed to complete the picture.

conversational skills Conversation approach is a method of teaching English as a
second and/or foreign language, the emphasis of which is on teaching the language as a
series of basic communication skills. In this approach, the teacher serves as the
facilitator of learning who sets the activity in motion, but then obliges the pupils to
conduct the activity to its conclusion encouraging communication in a natural setting.
10

Likewise, the language instructions make use of the everyday environment, which the
teacher tries to establish make the learners feel able to express themselves, to ask
questions, and to take risks in using the language. One of the challenges of teaching
conversation strategies is to present learner with the authentic need to use them in the
classroom, with the teaching of conversational skills an important component of current
communicative language teaching conversation classes are becoming widespread.
However teacher are reluctant which topic areas they would focus on. One of the
biggest challenges in teaching methodology is to find effective ways of preparing pupils
for spontaneous communication. As an answer to the challenge a new type of language
class, the conversation class, whose main objective is to improve the pupils
conversational skills. The result of the pre-test and the post-test revealed improvement
of the conversation skills of pupils after using the conversation lessons. As there was no
previous similar study made, this study presented a dynamic tool, which can be
expanded and improved by other researchers.

pupils
Bullecer, Glen C.
O-Tac
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of Knowledge Channel AidedInstruction on the Mathematics Achievement of Grade 2 Pupils at Sto.Nio Special
Education (SPED) Center, Tacloban City. It used the pretest and posttest control group
design. The study revealed that the Achievement of pupils taught using the Knowledge
Channel Aided Instruction was rated good while the Achievement of pupils taught
using the Conventional Method rate fair. This finding was supported by the gain
scores of the pupils in the Knowledge Channel Aided-Instruction which was 16.93
while the pupils taught using the Conventional Method was only 13.96. It also revealed
that there was a significant difference on the gain scores of the two groups of pupils as
shown in the computed t-values of 2.15 and associated by the small p-value of 0.036.
Both the Knowledge Channel and Conventional Methods are effective. In conclusion,
the Mathematics Achievement of the pupils taught using the Conventional Method is
fair while the pupils taught using the Knowledge Channel Aided Instruction is
good. It is recommend that the Knowledge Channel Aided- Instruction be used as a
method in Mathematics instruction.
Laser assembly with mirror-pin-stick (LAMPS) for measuring linear thermal
expansion coefficient: A breakthrough in K-12 physics classroom
Maglines, Ian R.
P-Sol***
In these times of global crisis, the quest for accurate scientific investigation has been in
jeopardy. Precision and accuracy always come at a high cost. Over the past years, we
have been innovating in order for us to quickly respond to this great challenge and to
cater to todays increasing scientific demands and for the future. Much has been said
with the dawn of the K-12 Curriculum Implementation the need for appropriate rooms
and pieces of equipment especially in the field of Sciences and Physics in particular.
However, the procurement of such devices is very limited in most public secondary
schools. Introducing the LASER Assembly with Mirror-Pin-Sticks (LAMPS). LAMPS
has been an excellent technique in measuring small movements of objects like bending
of walls when pushed. The heart of the set-up is the mirror-pin assembly attached to a
meter stick and acts as a roller that any movement of the meter stick turns the mirror
slightly and causes the deflection of the laser spot. Using the measured data: the radius
of the pin, the deflection of the laser spot, and the length of the reflected beam; the
displacement could be measured. In this investigation, as the researcher is now calling
this as LAMPS, the same method is used to measure linear thermal expansion and
compared to the highly expensive Dial Gauge. This technique has a low cost advantage
over Dial Gauge since cheap materials can be used to for the experimentation. The aim
11

of this study is to investigate the precision and accuracy of LAMPS compared to the
Dial Gauge. After careful analysis, both method yield considerably low random errors
(3.8% for the LAMPS and 1.81% for the Dial Gauge) and low systematic errors (9% for
LAMPS and 10.5% for the Dial Gauge). The figures indicate that both instruments give
precise and accurate measurements and the slight difference of the figures indicate that
LAMPS has precision and accuracy comparable to the Dial Gauge.

Learning activities for learners with Down syndrome

Alvarez, Aida M.
P-Cat
The purpose of the study is to find out which of learning activities contributed to the
vocabulary skill activities utilized contributed to the development of pupils with Down
syndrome in Catbalogan I SPED Center during the School Year 2014-2015. These
activities are geared towards the enhancement and development of the learners
production of simple words or sentences, and improvement of language vocabulary skill
with the end in view of devising plan of series of activities for learners with Down
syndrome. The respondents of the study were the non-graded elementary SPED teacher,
and the parents of learners with Down syndrome. A questionnaire, checklist and
observation checklist were used to gather the data, which served as bases in determining
the learners attitude towards learning, and identifying which activities contributed to
the development of learners language skills. The results manifested that learners with
Down syndrome are very much the same as other children in temper, reaction and
excitement. They enjoy learning new things, playing and reacting to materials given to
them and they can progress by providing as many chances as possible for them to
manifest learning. Just like the other children of their age, they like positive experiences
with their peers; they react to materials that interest them; they like to meet other people
and love to see other places. It revealed that 6 out of 6 learners with Down syndrome
have not mastered the activities like uttering short and long vowel sounds, consonantvowel blending, consonant-vowel-consonant blending, and naming objects even with
pictures while two learners improved and mastered the aforecited activities. Budget of
Lessons was developed highlighting series of activities on identified areas using wordpicture combination, picture-article combination, picture sentence matching and
phoneme-sound recognition. These are prepared for the enhancement and improvement
of spoken language skills of learners with Down syndrome.
Mainstreaming of children with special needs at the SPED schools in Leyte: Views,
practices, and problems
Teston, Ledwina C.
P-Tac
This descriptive study aimed to determine the implementation of mainstreaming
program of the DepEd in the Province of Leyte in terms of views, practices and
problems of the school Principals, SPED Teachers, Reg, Education Teachers, Parents of
CSN, the CSN and the Regular Pupils. Specifically the results showed that the SPED
teachers have a highly positive regard towards mainstreaming. On the other hand
Regular teachers have a negative regard towards mainstreaming. There are significant
differences in the means of the four groups of the perceptions on the extent of
implementation of mainstreaming program for CSN. The Kruskal-Wallis One-Way
Analysis of Variance was used to measure the differences of the perceptions of the four
groups. The difference of perceptions was significant at 0.05 level of significance.
There are significant differences on the perception of the following pairs of
respondents. Moreover, to know which pair of means have significant differences; the
Two-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test was used. The result showed that there are
significant differences on the perceptions on the mainstreaming program for CSN
between the following groups: School Principals and Regular Education Teachers (pvalue = 0.028) and Regular Education Teachers and Parents of CSN (p-value = 0.003).
12

On the other hand, the rest of the pairs of groups have no significant differences on their
views about the mainstreaming program. There are three topmost problems met by the
respondents as follows; lack of SPED specialists to handle the program; lack of
facilities; lack in-service trainings in special education by regular education teachers.
Negative attitudes of regular students towards mainstreaming is the least of problems by
the respondents. With the findings and conclusions above on the views, practices and
problems, meet by the respondents in the mainstreaming problem hereby, generated a
recommendation of some programs, strategies and techniques to be observed by the
administrators and teachers in both classes, the regular and the SPED classes
respectively, the parents and the CSN in order to strengthen the program and can be
fully established in all SPED centers with mainstreaming practices.

Sci-mazing game as an outdoor teaching-learning strategy in high school science
Tiu, Ryan R.
P-Bor
Approaches in constructivist learning point out on the idea of an active and
experiencing learner in an environment where knowledge is not transmitted to the
learner rather constructed through activity like games. The K to 12 education follows
these approaches as Science teaching is done through the inquiry-based approach.
Addressing this, game-based learning is done, which is a strategy that engages students
in the topic, makes learning fun, and motivates learning outside the classroom.
Scimazing Game, an outdoor game-based teaching-learning strategy, was developed
for a high school science class to determine the outcome of the achievement of students,
and allow the learners to have fun while gaining knowledge and skills at the same time.
Using the Scimazing Game strategy, results showed an increase in the test results of
the students. Pre- and post-test scores of the students were also subjected to paired t-test
and showed a significant difference. Likewise, the three variables on the profile of the
students, namely: its sex, age, and general weighted average, showed no significant
association on the academic achievement of the students. This result supports the
increasing attention of utilizing game-based teaching-learning strategy and management
14

as a powerful medium for teaching and learning. Scimazing Game provides a varied
strategy and innovative resource that would help increase the students academic
achievement in Science.

The status of bullying and its impact on grade six school children among central
elementary schools in the division of Eastern Samar
Mustacisa, Janice M.
O-Eas
This study aimed to determine the relationship between the status of bullying and its
impact of Grade 6 pupils among central elementary schools in the Division of Eastern
Samar. This study used a descriptive correlational research and utilized a descriptive
survey questionnaire in gathering data from the respondents. There were a total of 1,260
respondents of the study. Results of the study revealed the following: The Grade 6 pupil
were aware on what bullying is, they knew concepts and the characteristics of the bully
and the victim. There is the occurrence of verbal and social bullying among central
elementary schools in the Division of Eastern Samar. Bullying has great impact on
pupils behavior and moderate impact on pupils performance. The higher the level of
awareness of pupils on bullying the higher is its effect on their performance. Based on
the findings revealed, the researcher recommends the following: 1) Values education
should be a separate subject in the primary and elementary grades in order to strengthen
values formation of pupils; 2) Teachers and parents should serves as models to their
children on the practice of good moral values; 3) A study may be conducted to validate
the findings of this study or the status of implementation of Anti-bullying Act of 2013
in elementary schools of the Division of Eastern Samar; 4) An intervention scheme is
placed to help teachers and schools administrators minimize if not eradicate bullying
practices of pupils in school. This can be done through a more intensive school-based
training program by the DepEd in the Division of Eastern Samar in order that teachers,
pupils and parents will be able to attend trainings and orientation seminars about R.A.
10627. However, the intervention scheme should be discussed in Division MANCOM
and be approved by the Management committee of the DepEd prior to implementation.

Delorino, Christine T.
O-Nor***
This action research concentrating on the improvement of student learning in
Mathematics is conducted among the selected fourth year students of Catarman
15

National High School. It tried to find out the concepts/lessons in Mathematics that the
students have negative attitude; determine the factors that influence students negativity
towards Mathematics; and identify mathematical games that enhanced mathematics
learning among selected fourth year students. This study, which use the case study
design, recognized and determined the problem, collected data related to the factors or
circumstances associated with the problem; diagnosed or identified the causal factors as
bases for remedial or developmental treatment; applied remedial or adjustment
measures and conducted follow-up to determine the effectiveness of the corrective or
development measure were applied. In the analysis of the common and majoy problem,
the researcher found out that the specific cause of the dilemma points to the following
factors: student, teacher, parent, subject and environment. To solve the said problem,
the researcher has utilized mathematical games that enhanced students mathematics
learning. It was found out that PWDe (Puzzle, Word Factory, Decoding, and other
educational games) games are effective in arousing students interests and mathematics
learning. In the light of the forgoing concern, the researcher has advanced the
recommendation of determining students attitude towards other mathematical
concepts/lessons, knowing all the factors that affect students negativity in
Mathematics, conducting school-based seminar workshop among mathematics teachers
on the creation and production of mathematical games, and presenting to all educational
stakeholders the results of this study.

form hunger and malnutrition.
Study habits of Grade 5 pupils in Cabalasan Elementary School
Salas, Hope Marie Lourdes G.
P-Bay
The nature of study habits of elementary pupils inferred effectiveness and efficiency in
school management. Many of the learning activities in school required fully brained
pupils with excellent study habit skills. Pupils with good study habits especially at the
early years had immense implication towards academic. The researcher determined the
study habits of the Grade 5 pupils in Cabalasan Elementary School, Division of Baybay
City during the school year 2014-2015 with an end view of recommending ideas for an
intervention in improving pupils study habits. The study employed normative survey
method using checklist of Ralph C. Preston and Morton Botel. Interpretation of data
16

was based on the use of simple percentage, mean and Fischers t-test. Results showed
that less than half of the time lead in most frequent response in Grade V pupils of
Cabalasan Elementary School for the school year 2014-2015 wherein 4 out of 5
descriptive responses showed that there was no significant difference between male and
female grade five pupils in study habit contexts such as previewing, reading note taking
while reading, remembering, report writing, listening & taking class notes, preparing for
examination, taking examination, planning time and arranging physical setting. The
Study implied that aside from collaborating with all the stakeholders, continuous
learning must be offered in school through provision of time in searching, collecting,
organizing, and interpreting ideas in a learning hub with available reference books and
study equipment for a more relevant and fruitful integration of knowledge. Stressing the
importance of macro skills such as listening, reading, writing and speaking in language
was of upmost necessity in pupils study habits learning development.
The alternative learning system accreditation and equivalency (ALS A&E) test
papers in the Division of Tacloban City: A tracer study
Zanoria, Edever B. and Grace C. Zanoria
O-Tac
Following a descriptive-survey design, this tracer study determined the demographic
characteristics of fifty (50) Alternative Learning System Accreditation and Equivalency
(ALS A&E) test passers and their transitions to various opportunities after passing the
test. It also documented their current statuses and their varied reasons were also
explored. Likewise, a retrospective assessment on the level of program usefulness and
their suggestions to address their needs were also provided. Incidental sampling was
used and only dependent on the response rate of the targeted response. Results revealed
that most of them were females and were within the 20-24 age brackets; single;
majority passed the secondary test level during S.Y. 2012-2013; were third year high
school before passing the test; dropped from formal school because of lack of personal
interest and other personal and family related reasons; enrolled to ALS because they
believed the program can help them finish their basic education; 80% have not attended
any skills training and seminars after they passed the test, while 20% said they have
attended some; thirty-two (32%) percent of the secondary level passers enrolled to
college after passing the test. Currently, 42% are studying; 22% are self-employed; 20%
are idle; and 16% were employed mostly in private agencies, working in the
construction and trade sectors as skilled workers/electricians, drivers, sales clerks and
sales ladies. Majority, or 84% assessed the program to be very useful and 72%
suggested offering scholarship grants to deserving passers to help them attain their
goals. It appears from this initial report that although the passers may have limited
access to various productive opportunities because of economic and family
circumstances, the ALS program is contributing towards the attainment of Education
for All (EFA) goals.
The effect of a short-term teacher training in classroom management on pupil
behavior
Tamayo, Mark Chester Anthony G.
P-Tac
One hundred and forty-six (146) teachers from Kinder 1 to Grade 6 from 7 public
schools in District Learning 1, Tacloban City, participated in a short-term teacher
training in classroom management, first semester of school year 2014-2015. After the
exposure to the program, a 39% purposive sample of 57 teachers were observed by a
team of administrators trainers to ascertain the effect of the training on the classroom
behavior of pupils. The total number of pupils in the 57 classes observed approximated
2,024. The researcher hypothesized that subsequent to the teachers exposure to the
training program, the incidence of pupil disruptive behavior will be minimized. Using
17

the qualitative ethnographic method, the researcher collected data with the use of
triangulation techniques, namely, content analysis of teachers journals and anecdotal
records, field/classroom observation notes, and casual interviews with some teacher
participants. Data analysis included both verbal analysis and quantitative measurement
(frequencies, ranks, and percentage computations). Three categories of disruptive
behavior were identified prior to the training intervention, namely; pupil-relating
contingent, teacher-contingent, and home-contingent disruptive behavior with bullying
topping the list. Following the intervention, half of the behavior types were eradicated
with bullying down to the lower ranks. With the lowered incidence of misbehavior,
positive changes in pupil behavior was observed, among these, attentiveness and
responsiveness in the top ranks. Likewise, an improvement in teachers management
behavior was observed. The researchers hypothesis that the training intervention will
have a positive effect/impact on minimizing pupil disruptive behavior was accepted. It
is suggested that school-parent collaboration be strengthened, regular INSET for teacher
-retooling in the District be encouraged, and this research be replicated in the five other
District Learning Centers in the Division to validate the findings of this study.
The impact of vocabulary enhancement on the writing skills of grade 5 learners of
Tawid Elementary School: A learning motivation tool
Cawaling, Jefrey M.
P-Maa
This research aimed to develop written skills through vocabulary enhancement of 5th
grade learners of Tawid Elementary School. The research was designed under the
paradigm of action research. A total sample of 21 students from Grade 5 was selected
for the study. The age, gender and average grade in English of the respondents were
obtained as their profiles following the methods being applied in the study. The baseline
assessment was carried out to discover the pre-intervention writing skill score of the
pupils prior to the intervention cycle one. Later, intervention and writing skill support
strategies were carried out for two quarters. Finally, posttest was conducted to explore
the differences occurred in the writing score of the students as a post intervention effect.
The findings obtained from the quantitative data showed the improvement in the written
expression skills of the students. It was observed that through taking the above
mentioned measures; the teachers can help students improve their writing skills. The
more the students understand the writing process, the more they will be able to express
themselves efficiently (Casewell, 2008; Ozbell, 2006 & Smith, 2005).
The mathematics performance using cellphone reminder
Dongon, Beth Catherine M.
P-Bay
This study intends to find the effect of cellular phone reminder to the mathematics
performance of 682 Grade 8 students of Baybay City Division. The study used Nested
Factor Experimental design. Two variables were studied in this research; the
Mathematics performance of the experimental group (the group receiving reminders),
and the control group (the group not receiving reminders) to determine if there is a
significant difference in their Mathematics performance. Using the Mann-Whitney test,
results show that there is significant difference in the Mathematics performance of each
schools experimental and control group groups. Moreover, using Nested Factor
ANOVA, results reveal that there is a significant difference in the Mathematics
performance of Grade 8 student groups nested within schools in the whole Baybay City
Division. This implies that cellphone reminder is an effective intervention tool in
improving the academic performance of Baybay City Division Grade 8 students in their
Mathematics performance.

P-Eas
This study determined the relationship between typhoon Yolanda experiences and
academic performance of grade six pupils in Talangdawan Elementary School, S.Y.
2014-2015. A descriptive correlation were employed to find out the typhoon Yolanda
experiences and academic performance of grade six pupils. The data gathered were
tallied and tabulated using descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean and
percentage. The Cramers V correlation coefficient was used to test the null hypothesis.
The level of significance was set at .05 level. Results revealed the following: There
were 15(50.0%) with ages of 11-12 years old, 16(53.3%) females, 11(36.7%) belongs to
family with 8-above children, and 24(80%) has a monthly family income of
Php4,999.00. The Typhoon Yolanda experiences of the respondents were as follows:
Average for financial condition (3.30), sufficient for food provision (3.91), slightly
damaged for shelter (3.37), moderately good for health condition (2.74), adequate for
transportation from home to school (3.51) and good for total school condition (3.59).
The academic performance of the grade six pupils before typhoon Yolanda was
satisfactory ranging from 80 to 84 % for 13(43.3%) respondents and after typhoon
Yolanda it was also satisfactory ranging from 80-84% for 22(73.3%) respondents. The
researcher recommends the following: The school should maintain the learning
environment to ensure an increase of their academic performance. Government should
maintain livelihood opportunities to increase the family income of students. Parents
especially the fathers should strive hard to look for occupations or means of livelihood
for them to support the needs of their children. Parents should have other source of
19

income to support the financial needs of their children. Further studies should be
conducted related to this study in order to verify, amplify and validated these findings.
Use of songs in teaching english macro skills
Amigo, Jerelyn R.
O-Sol**
Through melodies and lyrics, people all over the world share a mutual way of
communicating. Hence, the main objective of this paper was to explore how English
macro skills can be taught with the use of music and songs and how can these be used
to enhance the students motivation in learning English. Fifty (50) fourth year high
school students of Bontoc National High School were subjected to two (2) learning
conditions: instruction with song and without song during the third quarter of the school
year 2013-2014. Using quasi-experimental and descriptive-comparative research

The study is a correlational study aimed to assess whether the work-related stressors
faced by teachers in Sta. Cruz Elementary School are related significantly to their
burnout levels. This study attempts to describe the influence of demographic profile and
coping styles on the burnout levels of the respondents. The data were gathered through
the use of questionnaires. There were 8 respondents who received the questionnaires.
On demographic profile of teachers, all 8 respondents (100%) are female. It is further
reflected that there were 2 teachers (25%) whose age ranges from 20-35 years old, 4
teachers (50%) who are were 36-50 years old, and 2 teachers (25%) were 51-65 years
old. As to civil status, 6 respondents (75%) are married and 2 respondents (25%) are
single. With regards to experience, result showed that there were 2 teachers (25%)
whose teaching experience is less than 5 years and 6 teachers (75%) whose teaching
experience is 5 or more years. Among the work-related stressors, poor working
condition is highly stressful to teachers. The data disclosed that respondents feel
moderately stressful in teaching. No significant difference on work-related stressors was
shown when teachers were grouped according to age, civil status, and length of service.
Direct coping style was found to be very effective in reducing stress. As to burnout
level, the result indicated that teachers experience moderate burnout in the field of
teaching wherein among the nine (9) indicators, feeling used up at the end of the day,
showed strong burnout level to teachers. Poor working conditions, problems towards
pupils, management styles, shows a positive correlation to burnout while extraorganizational stress factors shows no correlation to burnout. On the coping styles
adopted by teachers, direct and palliative coping reported a positive correlation to
burnout levels of teachers. The findings of the study suggest that teachers employing
direct or palliative coping style might be prone to emotional exhaustion or burnout, with
direct coping showing a higher correlation with burnout.
