Teaching is the ability to make a change. It provides the opportunity to be

able to provide
positive futures for those that felt it was dim. Teachers are the backbone of the
learning system. They
have the ability to see qualities or characteristics that need polishing, and allow
others to be perfected.
The reason why I wanted to go into teaching is very plain and simple, I enjoy when
others succeed.

My goal for my future classroom is to be able to provide a positive learning

environment that
allows students the ability to express themselves in their skills and talents in
cosmetology. My
classroom will have open communication. It will be composed of individuals that
possess their own
characteristics but we will function as a strong team. We will be a team and build
each other up,
compliment and help each other because we are a team, and as a team we
recognize and value the fact
that we are only as strong as our weakest link. When you provide a classroom to
function as a whole
unit, not only does it enrich the classroom environment but it also enhances each
individual student as
they take ownership in their actions and place value on the content they are
learning.
I enjoy helping students learn and taking their skill and talents to the next
level. I understand
that each will be unique in their skills and it is my motivation to help each and every
one of them see
that. Before any learning will occur, it is my vision to help each student while in my
classroom develop
the proper and positive mindset to be able to value their learning and understand
that all learning

process. By establishing a positive mental set, or attitude of readiness the student

is showing that they
are eager to learn the important information and skills that are to be presented
(Slavin, 2009). Some
subjects may not come easy and may take more work that other areas, however I
will reinforce that
hard work does pay off and that they may achieve anything thing they set their
minds to.
My classroom and content will be challenging yet achievable. The content to
be taught and
demonstrated will benefit the student not only in the cosmetology field but in the
everyday aspects of
life as well. The curriculum will meet the needs of all learning styles of the students
and be inclusive. It
will be one of such that will keep the interest high, and the ability to seek motivation
and influence it as

well.
In my content of cosmetology it is composed of a 1500 hour study. It is called
Visions School of
Cosmetology, and it is located inside of the Huron Area Technical Center. We are
housed in the main
building along with various other CTE programs. We are a learning hub that
accommodates the needs
of 7 public schools, 6 rural schools, and 4 parochial schools. Our address is 1160 S
Van Dyke Rd. Bad
Axe, Michigan 48413. The phone number is 989-269-3447. We are the first
classroom off to the left
hand side when you walk in from the main doors.

The classroom is set up with the

accommodate the needs of handicapped accessible students and clientele. First is

the salon. It has

been completely remodeled with 12 styling stations, 4 manicure tables, 6 shampoo

bowls and chairs, a
waxing bed, a facial bed, and 2 new pedicure chairs. The stylist stations are 4 pods
of 3. They are all
black with black styling chairs. The shampoo bar is black granite with gray
shampoo bowls and black
shampoo chairs. The waxing bed and facial bed are cream in color and are enclosed
by a graphite gray
curtain. The manicure tables are composed of chic black chairs and beautiful black
and gray cushioned
tables. Lastly, our 2 new pedicure chairs are black with black and bronze blown
glass bowls. All of this is
located behind the front reception area which is composed of a black granite
reception desk and white
product display shelves. There are 6 chairs in the reception area for clients and it is
opened up by a
large window in the front of the salon that shows into the building. The white retail
shelves in the front,
and all white cupboards in the working area of the salon provide the feeling of
openness and provide a
clean atmosphere. The other side of the classroom is composed of lockers, tables
and chairs for the
students and 3 computers. When you first walk through that classroom door the
lockers are located to
the right and the student tables compromise the bulk of the area. The classroom
can seat 40 students.
There is also an area composed of brown granite counter tops where the students
under 350 hour
practice their hands on. The time clock is also located in this classroom.
This program is pretty unique. As I have stated before it is a 1500 hour
program, so for each
hour is earned by the students clock in time along with actively participating in the
class. The student

has to be 16 years of age. We are a 13 th year program, meaning that it takes 3

years to accomplish.
Since the students in high school only come 2-2 hours per day it takes that
amount of time to put in
the hours and gain state licensure after they pass their state boards. We accept
adult students or
people whom have already received their high school diploma or a GED. So those
student that may
attend for the total of 7 hours per day will complete the program within 2 years. We
do not have class
through summer so that is why it takes that amount of time to complete. We follow
the school year
calendar. The salon is open Tuesday through Friday 8:30am -2:30 pm. It is a very
unique schedule
because in the salon we will have clients through those hours but students rotate
out according to their
schedules along with students who attend all day. It is a challenge sometimes if
students are absent or
if we have an inclement weather day or delay, but we have a very open
communication system that
seems to aid in this matter. The students may only be in the salon or working on
clients after they have
reached 350 hours. Until then, they are to be in the classroom and practicing on
mannequins.
With all of the state guidelines to follow for both classroom needs and set up
and the many
needs of our students organization is key. Not only do we have to meet those needs
but to also include
and comply with the state curriculum and content standards. This is a lot to
consider but not
unbearable if good organization is maintained. With those needs in mind in my
classroom I wish to
create a positive pedagogy to add in the means of an effective teacher (Slavin,
2009).

I am a firm believer that if in a classroom standards have been set,

expectations have been
established, and goals are made then there will be less time spent on behavioral
issues and more time
on learning. If there is a clear reason to be there, value in the content and the
student feels your
genuine display for their success then that is when the learning environment is at
its richest. Also by
fulfilling the self-actualization idea displayed by Maslow all of the needs of being
accepted of self and
others, spontaneity, openness, relatively deep but democratic relationships with
others, creativity,
humor, and independence this is one way to establish the first step the hierarchy
(Slavin, 2009). This is a
pendulum that swings both ways. If a student is doing great then the achievements
are celebrated and

built upon. If the student is not understanding or struggling to conceptualize and

idea, then this too
along with the open communication and rapport established will be the step to the
student feeling open
to coming to the teacher and asking for help or clarification.
With my prior teaching experiences, along with the ability to adapt, make
common sense
decisions based on the good of the entire group, and from what I have learned and
am continuing to
learn here at Ferris University, I believe that I will be ready to continue to be an
asset to the learning
community and my content area, only a stronger one. With continual learning, and
information an

individual can only continue to learn. I know in order to be the best that I can be
that I will never stop
learning because everything will continue to evolve and become better or need to
be amended. This is
what a good teacher can accept and understand in order to provide the best for
their students and the
best means of management for their classroom. I am ready to travel that road.
