RADIO DREAMS

-by Group K

"Sindhu! Where have you been? cried

out an angry voice which ran all over the
Pancholi household. By the tone of Anuja
Pancholi's voice one can understand she was
absolutely infuriated by the fact that her
daughter came home late. "Baba and Bhaya
are home and are extremely hungry, Start
making the rotis!". Sindhu exhausted from
her long day of college and tuitions
reluctantly started helping with the dinner.
At the dinner table, the topic of Sindhu
getting married came up, lately this had been
a very common topic to talk about by the
members of the Pancholi clan besides
Sindhu. Sindhu, exhausted snapped and
replied, "Could we stop talking about this? I
have no interest in getting married and want
to build my career instead of building
someone's house right now!". Her father
enraged, " Sindhu, you are going to get
married after you finish college whether you
like it or not, you better start warming up to
the idea now!". By her father's tone she knew
his decision was set on stone. But this was
nothing new to Sindhu. All her life, all the
decisions were dictated to her by her parents,
mostly her father. But then, nobody knew
Sindhu had a dream. A dream she dreamt of
ever since she was a seven year old girl. A
dream to sing at the radio. Sindhus father
was an event manager and he and his family
was invited to most of the events, mainly
events that involved singers and musicians.
And thats how she developed an interest in
singing.

Every night, while everybody was asleep, she

would get out of the house and go into the
woods and sing. Sing to trees, to the sleeping
birds and animals. Only they knew how
angelic her voice sounded. To all those
people who passed by the woods, her songs
were lullabies to them, so melodious and so
soothing. Years and years went by this way.
Years and years went by this way.
One fine night, a person named Tulsi Rao
stopped at woods to take rest for it had
become too late at night already for him to
walk further into the woods. He set up his
tent and as he was dozing off, he heard a
voice that seemed sweeter than nectar and
more powerful than the thundering sky. He
decided to see from where the voice was
coming from, which beautiful soul owned
this voice. He followed the voice into the
woods and saw Sindhu sitting under a banyan
tree.
"Hello, miss", he called out. She heard his
voice; frightened she ran. He ran behind her
and finally, caught hold of her hand and
stopped her and assured her he was not
dangerous like she thought he was. He told
her how wonderful he thought her voice and
he had not heard anything as soothing as
hers. Tulsi Rao was a twenty seven year old
man who worked at the radio station in the
city. "So, Monday at 5:30 in the evening?
Will you be there?". "Of course. I wouldn't
miss this for the world", she replied. On
Monday, she promptly arrived at the radio
station. Tulsi received her and introduced her
to the rest of the employees at the radio
station.

And ever since then everything was going

perfect, instead of going for tuitions she was
now actually doing what she always dreamt
of. The whole city had fallen for her voice.
She knew this is something her parents
would never approve of and so, she came up
with a new lie every time she went home late
and by the fact that she looked so tired after
full day of singing, her mother use to pamper
her with all the food and say, Who said
engineering is a piece of cake? Only way to
get out of all this is to get married. Sindhus
attitude towards everything was changing.
She was now happier than ever and now even
the discussion of getting married did not
bother her so much.
Sindhu would everyday follow her routine of
going to college and then singing at the radio.
Sindhus parents were under the impression
that she was working really hard and really
wanted to do engineering.
So what is it other than engineering because
of which you are so happy? asked Sanjay,
Sindhus brother. Sindhu was terrified after
this question. She thought the truth was out.
Looking at Sindhus reaction her brother
realised that there was something which
Sindhu was hiding but at the moment he just
burst out laughing after the question to
pretend as though it were a joke but he knew
that the reason behind all her happiness is
something else but not her liking for
engineering.
Sanjays suspicion reached at a level that he
decided to spy on his sister. He followed her
wherever she went from morning till night.
He was happy to know that his sister was not
hiding anything from him until he reached
93.3 Radio Station following her. He knew

the truth. He knew that Sindhu was lying to

everyone. He now knew that she missed her
tuition classes. And the biggest of all he now
knew that the sensational singer, Seema, was
nobody but his sister. He was proud of her.
Sanjay could see happiness in Sindhus eyes
while she was singing. He could do anything
to let that happiness be there forever. He did
not confront her. If, this, being a secret was
keeping her happy, so be it.
One day, as Sindhu arrived at the radio
station, she saw her father at the office
having a conversation with Tulsi Rao. Before
she even turned to leave, Tulsi Rao called for
her, Seema, meet Mr. Pancholi. Her father
turned to look at the girl with the beautiful
voice with delight but as soon as he saw who
she was anger took over him followed by
disappointed. He had not expected his
daughter to betray his trust. But as she
explained to him the reason why she did this,
tears rolled down from his eyes. He felt
apologetic for not being able to understand
her when he should have. He held her hand
and told her how proud he was of her and that
he would make every attempt to be an
understanding father.
