ThebicyclewasinventedbyaGermanmannamedBaronKarlvonDrais,acivil
servanttotheGrandDukeofBadeninGermany.
Whatmaterialswereoriginallyused?
Thefirstbicyclewasmainlymadeupofwoodwhichisusedforthebody,wheels
andseatofthebicycle.Italsohassomemetalpartsscrewstoholdtogetherthebicycle.
Thefirstbicyclewasmadebyaddingtwowheelstoawoodenframe.Theleather
saddlewasnaileddowntothewoodenbase.Thebicyclewassteeredwithapairof
handlebarsthatonlydidthemostbasicofmovements.Thefirstbicyclefirstdidnthave
anypedalstomoveitmoreefficiently.Youwouldhavetopushitwithyourfeet.The
handlesonthefrontwerereallysmallandshortwhichmadeitabithardforpeopleto
grabontothem.
Alsoovertimepeoplerealizedthatwoodwasntthebestideatomakeabicycle
outofandinsteadofwoodtheystartedusingmetal.Thetireswerentmadeoutofwood
anymore,insteadthewheelwasmadeofmetalandthetirepartwasmadeofrubber.
Theseatoftheoriginalbicyclewasmadeofwoodatthebaseandwascoveredwith
leather.Nowtheseatofthebicycleispaddedsowhilesittingonitismorecomfortable
thanitwasalongtimeago.Theimprovementswereimportantbecauseithelpedthe
durabilityofthebicyclelastlonger.Theimprovementsalsohelpedbymakingitsothat
youuselessenergynowthattherearepedalstohelpspinthebackwheel.BaronKarl
vonDraishadputapatentontheDraisinemodelofthebicycle.Manypeopleliketouse
thebicycle,whentheyuseittheyuseitformanythings.Somepeopleliketouseitforart
otherpeopleliketouseitfortransportationtogettotheredestinationsandmuch
more.someimpactsthatthebicyclehashadontheworldismostlytransportation.Isay
thisbecausewhenyoudrivesomecarshavegassesthatdamagetheairthatwe
breatheanditinterfereswithourwildlifeandnottomentionourselves.Butwhenyou

engineeringbecausesomepartsthatwereaddedtothebicyclelateronisconsidered
vitalpartstomechanicalengineeringlikethegears.
