Introduction to Video Journalism 8: Scavenger Hunt

Directions: For homework this week, you will watch the news in some form. Try to (yawn) wake up early
and catch some of the local morning news, or evening news. Cable news is on all day, so try to include
some of this in your afternoon study time. Plan ahead!
Can you find the following? Write names and descriptions if you can catch them, but more importantly, just
watch for these things! I have attached clue words to help!

o Anchor: Host
Ex:
o Bites or Bytes: People speaking on tape. Quotes
Ex:
o B-Roll: Video to visualize.
Ex:
o Beats: Specific Reporters, ie: Education Reporter.
Ex:
o Bumpers: Tease
Ex:
o CGs: (A.K.A. SUPERS) Name and title line.
Ex:
o Closer: Concluding line. Summarize and sign off.
Ex:
o Feed: Sent in from outside.
Ex:
o Happy Talk: banter.
Ex:
o Kicker: Humorous, fun story at the end.
Ex:
o Lead-in: Introduce the feature.
Ex:
o NAT Sound: Background noise put in.
Ex:
o Out Cue: Cue the piece is ending.
Ex:
o Outtro: Goodbye.
Ex:
o Package: PKG or WRAP. Complete story.
Ex:
o Reader: story read with no feature.
Ex:
o Sound byte or bite: SOT where we see the news reporter.
Ex:
o Voice Over (VO) Read over a B-Roll.
