The Town of Strathmores partnership with

Canadian Badlands Tourism has gone through
different stages as the town has strived to
create branding and a campaign that shows
Strathmore as the gateway to the Canadian
Badlands and promotes tourism.
Earlier this year, Strathmore chose to maintain its membership in Canadian Badlands
Tourism and work towards this end. In return,
Canadian Badlands offered support of up to
$5,000 in matching funding for signage in the
Town of Strathmore. But, as of yet, Strathmore
has made no official decisions with regards to
this proposed funding and signage.
In the past, Strathmore town councillors
have debated whether or not it is beneficial
to the Town of Strathmore to be included in
the large Canadian Badlands municipality of
66 communities in promoting tourism. This
subject was on the agenda at the Aug. 3 town
council meeting.
Counc. Denise Peterson talked about the
importance of branding Strathmore and stated that she would like to see the concept
move forward. According to Peterson, council
appears hopeful to move forward and would
like to work with Canadian Badlands Tourism
and construct signage.
What we hope to do is to put a sign up on
the edge of the community that would indicate that we are part of them and also include
some other information, said Peterson, who
added that there is a possibility for additional
signage to be placed within the town.
Peterson suggested local talent could help
develop a destination marketing organization.
Weve often talked about branding our community in terms of what we have to offer, in
terms of culture and capacity for growth and
all those distinct things, she said. I think it
would be worthwhile to look at contracting
someone to put a proposal forward.
At the meeting, a motion was passed to
bring back a proposal to create the Canadian
Badlands sign and to look at contractors willing to create a destination marketing organization for Strathmore to help increase tourism.
Peterson believes the timing of creating this
proposal and seeing it move forward is ideal
for two reasons.

Rock and Shine!

The sound of motorcycles revs and the roar of classic car engines sounded throughout Rockyford on Aug. 6 as the Rockin Rockyford event took place. There was a show and shine, live
music and face painting while the crowds waited for the participants of the poker run to return
from their journey.

Tourism campaign
Continued from Page 1
First, Terri Kinsman, chairman of the
Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce, is very involved in Canadian Badlands Tourism and is a proponent of the
idea who helped to knowledgeably move it
forward with council. Second, Counc. Grajczyk recently became a board member of
Canadian Badlands Tourism and is poised
to jointly work towards a common purpose
of branding for Strathmore and promotion
of Canadian Badlands Tourism.
I think the combination of having Counc.
Grajczyk and Terri Kinsman both very, very
actively involved in Canadian Badlands has
put it on the radar in a very positive, hopeful way, said Peterson.

The human blood circulation system is amazing.

It consists of main arteries and veins but also has
over 300,000 million capillaries or tiny blood
vessels, many in-side the lungs to work to get rid
of carbon dioxide from the body and distribute
oxygen. Laid end to end, these capillaries would
stretch for 2400 km (1500 miles)!
With the increased interest in marijuana, it
bears remembering that smoking the product
still exposes the lungs to more than 150 chemical
compounds and tar that can irritate the airways.
When the lens in the eye clouds over, cataracts
result. Age and your genetic pro-file contribute
to the risk but you cant do much about those.
However, you can do the following: dont
smoke, protect your eyes from the sun, eat a
health diet of plenty of vegetables, nuts and
whole grains. And keep your blood sugar under
control.
Dental erosion is more common today with the
increase in consumption of acidic soft drinks.
Rinsing your mouth after drinking an acidic
beverage will help reduce erosion. If you eat
acidic foods, eat them with other foods like dairy
products. Using a soft toothbrush and a less
abrasive toothpaste will also help. Those whitening toothpastes are more abrasive than regular
toothpastes.
Its important to be an advocate for your own
health. Be an active learner about health matters
especially about the drugs you take. We can help
you.

Strathmore Rodeo queen crowned

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

The end of the 2016 Strathmore Stampede is the beginning of a new reign.
Nineteen-year-old Cayley Peltzer from
Rosemary, Alta. was crowned the new
Strathmore Stampede queen on July 30.
She was one of three contestants competing for this years title.
I definitely had mixed emotions going into the arena on Saturday, said
Peltzer. All the girls were capable of
being crowned and I just wanted to stay
neutral to not disappoint myself I guess.
When they did call my name, I was
like oh my goodness. This has been
like a lifelong dream of mine since the
age of six. To be crowned and represent
one of the biggest rodeos in Canada is
such a great feeling for sure.
Peltzer and two other contestants,
Shelby Stout and Lindsay Newman,
were judged throughout the week before the Stampede. Despite how busy
the three were, Peltzer enjoyed the
competition, citing the horsemanship
and the personal interviews as two of
her favourite components.
She also enjoyed being able to meet
new people and getting to know them
personally, from the sponsors to the rodeo fans and to all the people who are
part of the rodeo world.
Strathmores new queen will have
August off during which she will take
some time to spend with family and
friends, something she hasnt been able
to do much this summer. However, once
September begins she will be off to different rodeos and events around Alberta representing the Town of Strathmore
and the Strathmore Stampede.
One of the rodeos she would like to
attend is the Patricia Rodeo, where she
won one of her first buckles when she
was younger. Rodeo is part of her background: her father takes part in team

roping and she had previously taken

part in barrel racing, pole bending and
goat tying before she retired her horse.
She moved on to showing horses and
black Angus cattle.
Peltzer currently attends Lakeland
College, studying for a diploma in
agribusiness focusing on livestock. Although her queen schedule will involve
a lot of travel and events, the Strathmore rodeo committee assured her that
school would be a priority and they
would work with her schedule to ensure this is the case.
Once her reign is over, Peltzer would
like to apply to be Miss Rodeo Canada
before eventually moving on to study
for an animal health technician diploma.
I have always been that kind of person with little goals to accomplish big
goals, she said, so when I set my mind
to something, then I definitely try to
achieve it.

Badland Motorsports:
noise wont bother anyone
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

James Zelazo proposes to build Badlands Motorsports Resort (BMR) near the Rosebud River,
4.8 km east of Rosebud.
One road course would run beside the river,
another on the plateau above. The 5.8 km of
track would accommodate 100 drivers, totalling
400 daily. The resort would accommodate 1,400
people.
Nearby residents are concerned about noise.
The Rosebud community does not buy into
the promise that the track will be quiet, states
the website of the Save the Rosebud group. With
up to 100 high-powered cars on the track at one
time, Rosebud knows they will hear the whine
of a racetrack in what is now a peaceful hamlet.
Twenty-four residences are within three miles
and 123 residences are within eight miles of the
site, said Wendy Clark, a Save the Rosebud member.
BMR commissioned Acoustical Consultants Inc.
(ACI), to do a Noise Impact Assessment (NIA).
I have to rely on the experts that have provided this thing [sound study], Zelazo said. Thats
for whatever information that they wanted to get
regarding it, how we obtain it. To say how the
stuff was done ... thats not my area.
But the NIA says of its data: Information provided to ACI by Badlands Motorsports Club, Inc.
ACI does not take responsibility for the accuracy
of the information.
The report predicts BMR noise would be acceptable at Rosebud and surrounding farms. It
would be 37.7 decibels at the nearest residence,
it says, and inaudible in Rosebud.
No additional noise mitigation is required
based on the typical maximum weekend course
usage data provided to ACI by Badlands Motorsports Club, the NIA concludes. Special events
which may involve more course cars operating at
higher sound levels will need to be considered on
a case-by-case basis.
The level, which they use for creating for
decibels, which is rounded, in our study youll
see that it has the location of the farms around.
And theyre all within the limits of the Alberta
Environments decibel ratings, Zelazo said. This
study shows that it was negligible.
The sound study data, provided by BMR, estimates 81 to 95 decibels per vehicle. But elsewhere, the NIA report indicates a per-vehicle
maximum of 103 decibels. And at lotustalk.com,
a racing forum, Jay Zelazo, president and CEO
of Badlands Recreational Development Corporation, predicts 95 to 98 decibel limits on the upper
track, and 105 decibels on the lower.
BMR plans to monitor sound output.
Competitors carry sole responsibility to determine that their vehicles comply with Sound Control Regulations, the NIA states. All cars will be
monitored and readings will be posted for competitors information. A driver registering a single
sound level reading over 103 dBA (decibels) shall
not be black-flagged.
The first two times a vehicle is flagged for excessive noise, it will be required to make adjustments before returning to the track. After the third
strike, it will be withdrawn from the course.
The valleys unique topography may affect
sound travel, according to Fiona Lauridsen, who
posted an open letter to Albertas Premier on Save
the Rosebuds website.

I lived two miles upstream from the hamlet of

Rosebud, Lauridsen wrote. My home was 500m
from the rivers edge. I liked to play my small African hand drum on my deck.
People in Rosebud told her they heard her
drumming, she said. One little hand drum, two
miles away, heard in town.
Paul Lassen, an acoustician and Rosebud resident, in a statement to Kneehill County Council, described weaknesses in the NIA. The noise
projections are unreliable and irrelevant, he said,
because theyre based on the developers data,
which used average noise levels, not maximums.
Also, theres no legislation binding BMR to implement its sound monitoring plan.
Regardless, Zelazo says, people might like hearing BMR noise.
Sounds are, they can be loud but theyre not
unpleasant, he said. A lot of people really like
the sound of vehicle mufflers too. And it is not
only the sound, its the type of sound and what
sound can be annoying and what isnt annoying.
The NIA doesnt mention noise impact on wildlife, though BMRs Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) says the great blue heron and the
prairie falcon, both listed as sensitive, and the
peregrine falcon, listed as threatened, have been
seen on the site, as have the ferruginous hawk,
golden eagle, northern harrier, Swainsons hawk,
and the short-eared owl.
The EIA suggests a 1,000 metre setback from
specified nests, April 15 to July 15. But Albertas
Land-Use Guidelines require a 1,000 metre setback year-round.
BMR development wont touch the cliffs, so
the EIA says cliff nests wont be directly affected.
It doesnt suggest how adults and young in cliff
nests will respond to vehicle noise above and below. The EIA predicts wildlife may leave the site
during construction, but will return afterward.
Clark and her husband offered to purchase the
site at fair market value from Zelazo in 2013, she
said. Zelazo said their offer covered only his price
for the original parcel, not additional land purchased later. Clark said theyll re-offer at todays
fair market value, which is significantly higher.
Zelazo said the Badlands Motorsports Resort
has submitted all applications to Kneehill County
and government bodies, and is now awaiting final
approval.
To learn more about the proposed development
and the concerns of nearby residents, see badlandsmotorsports.com and savetherosebud.ca.

years. She said the A&W MS day started in Saskatchewan in 2008 and then
grew to partner with all A&W locations
in Canada.
At the Strathmore A&W location,
there will be three different activities
to raise money: a silent auction, a raffle prize draw and a garage sale. Bidders can start bidding on silent auction
items on display at the restaurant on
Aug. 8 and the bidding will run up until Aug. 25. Items will be donated by
local businesses.
A raffle prize draw will consist of
a mountain bike donated by Liquidation Station for first prize; a large A&W
stuffed animal bear for second prize;
and a Sony cyber-shot camera donated
by the MS Society for third prize.
Raffle tickets can be purchased at the
A&W restaurant starting Aug. 1. The
draw will take place on Aug. 25 at 8
p.m. Tickets are $5 each.
The garage sale will feature items
donated by local residents and will
take place on Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. to 2
p.m. There will be no suggested selling
price for items. Instead, the public is
encouraged to donate a desired dollar
amount for each item.
A&W has enlisted the mayor, firemen, policemen and other volunteers
to come out and help at the Strathmore restaurant location on Aug. 25.
Volunteers will be helping in the food
service area or helping with the silent
auction and raffle tickets area

Lardens honoured with Keith Schneider award

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

It came as a shock for Don and Carolyn Larden when their names were
called to receive the Keith Schneider
award on July 31 at the Strathmore
Stampede.
Carolyn had set herself up so she
could
take
pictures
of
the
award
w i n n e r s
while
Don
was back in
his spot at
the catching
pens when
their family
walked in the
arena.
T h a t s
when
the
announcer
called their
names
and
they
knew
they
were
being
honoured.
We were
very
surprised, said
Don. We were both very honoured
to get the award named for one of the
best mayors we have ever had and the
greatest person too.
The couple have dedicated many

years of their lives to volunteering and

helping in the community. Don was
involved in coaching hockey and girls
ball as well as volunteering with the
Strathmore Lions Club.
Carolyn helped tutor school children
at Wheatland Elementary as well as being part of the Christmas Hamper program. The one thing they have in common
with
their volunteer work is
the Strathmore Rodeo.
It was Don
who fell in
love
with
the
sport
after he attended his
first rodeo in
Str athmore
with his then
two-year-old
daughter
when the rodeo grounds
were
between Kinsmen
Lake
and
the
fire hall. So
began
the
Lardens affair with the Strathmore
Stampede.
For the past 30 years Don has taken his place behind the chutes for the
timed events such as bull dogging,

team roping and the tie down. This

year, along with receiving the award,
he also received a broken rib courtesy
of a runaway calf that ran over him.
While Carolyn wasnt behind the
scenes, she used to be one of the 50/50
ticket sellers until she injured her foot
making it hard to walk. Despite this injury, she wouldnt let it stop her and
so she picked up a camera and a new
hobby.
The two have no plans of stopping
their volunteering work. The former
owners of Lar-Don rentals recently
handed the business down to their son
and officially call
themselves semiretired,
which
leaves time for
their
volunteer
work.
We have been

doing it for so long and we enjoy it,

said Don. So long as our health keeps
us going, we will go back.

Farmers experienced crop
damage during the storm.
The farm on the Nightingale
corner of Secondary Hwy
564 and Range Road 245
experienced extensive damage to its crop and other areas. Abel said, They lost the
roof of their barn. Their kids
playhouse went flying. Their
sheep scattered. Yes, it was
pretty bad out there.
Farmers in the area will be
facing major expenses from
this storm.
They are going to be hit
the hardest, said Abel.
Kirk Torneby, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said 85 km/h wind gusts
were recorded in the Strathmore area on July 30.
However, some locals say
the wind was clocked at 113
km/h with hail.
Severe weather across
southern Alberta, lots of instability in the atmosphere
and lots of other triggers
going on led to a pretty
good outbreak of severe
thunderstorms that moved
across the southern part of
the province, said Torneby.
Hail and wind were the bigger of the damages associated with the storm.

The storm that caused
havoc during the Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days left its mark on
the surround community as
well.
On Saturday, July 30, a major storm ripped through the
Hamlet of Nightingale and
caused severe damage to local properties and farms.
The area was buffeted
with strong wind gusts that
uprooted trees, grain bins
and trampolines.
Christine Abel lives on an
acreage in Nightingale and
said the storm picked up
five grain bins and rolled
them close to her property.
She said one grain bin almost hit her house.
I saw grain bins rolling
down the road and trees
snapping in front and then
we looked out the back, my
husband and I, and saw a
grain bin come right straight
for the house and it just
missed the house by like 10
feet, she said.
According to Abel, nothing in the area outside was
safe unless it was tied down.
Trampolines went flying.

Local singer shines at Heritage Days

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

Sixteen-year-old Kathryn Pease took
to the outdoor stage at the Strathmore
Stampede and Heritage Days to belt
out some tunes for a packed audience.
Pease started singing when she was
five years old, and has been singing at
the Strathmore Stampede event since
the age of nine. During this years
event, she performed five songs on the
outdoor stage each day.
She said her dad, Graydon, served as
inspiration to her to start singing.
My dad was always singing. I always heard him, so I really like singing, said Pease.
Both father and daughter used to
perform at the Strathmore Stampede
and Heritage Days outdoor stage together, but now the younger Pease
mainly sings on her own.
The first song they sang together was
Butterfly Fly Away by Miley Cyrus.

A record amount of 90 Albertan host
farms and ranches have begun to prepare for the fourth annual Open Farms
Days, to be held Aug. 20-21.
Open Farm Days organizers, including the Alberta government, Agriculture
for Life and the Alberta Association of
Agricultural Societies, held a media
event at the Rocky R Guest Ranch on
Aug. 2 to talk about what Open Farm
Days are about.
I think it is a beautiful story, the story we are telling about this province,
said Ricardo Miranda, Albertas minister
of culture and tourism. We are talking
about agriculture, we are talking about
the history and the narrative that ties
this all together. When we are talking
about open farm days we are talking
about educating the people in the cities
about what is happening in the rest of
the province.
For Miranda, Open Farm Days are a
way for the people of Alberta to see
how they are interconnected through

issues such as food security and the understanding that someone must work
the fields in which the food comes from.
Along with educating the public, who
get to meet and question the farmers
and ranchers who help produce their
food, there is another upside for the
hosts.
According to Luree Williamson, CEO
of Agriculture for Life, Open Farm Days
allows participating farmers and ranchers to showcase what they are growing and how they grow it, as well as
the opportunity to sell and profile their
goods.
The agriculture and food awareness
is what Open Farm Days is all about,
said Tim Parson, from the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies. Its
also about showcasing the entrepreneurship that is Alberta.
For both Parson and Miranda, the
event also offers the idea of a staycation for Albertans as they get to tour
parts of the province they may have
never seen before while meeting new
people.

Theatre of Consequence
performs second play
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Theatre of Consequence, a new company founded by Rosebud School of
the Arts graduates Conrad Belau and
Sienna Holden, is in rehearsals for
their second show, Brilliant Traces by
Cindy Lou Johnson.
Holden and John McIver, also a
Rosebud School of the Arts graduate,
are the two-person cast. McIver earned
a 2015 Calgary Critics Award nomination for his performance in We Are the
Body. Holden is, with Belau, co-artistic
director of Theatre of Consequence.
Their performances are gutsy, big
and emotional, said Belau. They
make the characters rise to glorious
heights of healing and grace. Its astounding.
The story of Brilliant Traces is actually incredibly simple. It opens on a
woman in a white dress banging on
the door of a cabin in Alaska, and finally busting in.
She wakes the cabins owner, then
passes out and sleeps for two days.
When she wakes, A conversation
happens that pushes both of them to

their breaking points, said Belau.

Its a modern fairy tale. Something
whimsical, and set in a situation we
may never find ourselves in. But its a
hugely-relatable play, asking us what
we truly want in this world.
The story brings many deep human
fears to life, said Holden. The death
of a loved one, becoming unimportant,
being indistinguishable to the people
that matter the most to you.
Yet she wants the show to bring affirmation.
I hope that [audience members]
walk away with a desire to engage life
to the fullest and not sit on the sidelines while their life passes them by,
she said. We are moving towards a
more individualistic way of existing,
but that need for human connection
does not disappear. We work so hard
to control the life happening around
us, but we are all just desperately looking for a tribe to belong to.
The show will be fun too, added
Holden.
The dialogue has a sparring quality
to it that the audience will enjoy, she
said. The relationship that develops
between the two characters is quite

lovely and will leave the audience

wanting to see what happens next.
Belau and Holden were pleased with
the success of their first production,
The Monument, this June, and are already looking ahead to the companys
second season.
The audiences and reviews [of The
Monument] were so raving positive,
and the production itself was a strong
debut, Belau said. A part of this upcoming season [is] we wanted to see
how we could bring some of Rosebud
to Calgary bring our artistic home to
the city we are trying to artistically add
to.
Brilliant Traces runs Aug. 24 to 27
in Motel Theatre in the Arts Commons
in Calgary. Get tickets at theatreofconsequence@gmail.com or 587-887-1002.
Come out and hear a story that is so
fantastical, but is relevant to each and
every one of us, Belau said.
It reminds me of Nora Ephron
(Sleepless in Seattle, Youve Got Mail)
and how she places these characters
in such whimsical situations, that we
at first are like I wish I was like that,
[until we come] to the realization, that
is me.

Open Farm Days

Continued from Page 10
Parsons explained this is also a great way to help boost
the economy as it will help the growing agricultural tourism
trend in Canada.
Open Farm Days events have occurred in a number of
other provinces across Canada, and having seen the success
of these events, the organizers of the Alberta Open Farm

Days decided to bring it to the province four years ago in the

hopes of making it an annual event.
The two-day event also features some of Albertas top chefs
using fresh ingredients from host farms to make unique culinary dishes. On Aug. 2, the host farms and ranchers will
open their gates to the public where they will be able to
enjoy what the farms have to offer. For more information on
the event visit albertafarmdays.com.

Thank you!

It was an absolute pleasure spending the afternoon with you all! We

look forward to visiting you and your community again.

Strathmore youngster writes, publishes book

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

Eleven-year-old Florence Kalia from
Strathmore recently wrote and published a book titled A Trip
to Candyland.
The book follows Ruben,
Max and Hershey on their
escapades within Candyland
as they visit places such as
Chocolate Milk River and
Jello Park and eventually
become trapped, looking
for a way to escape and go
home.
The plot of this story
keeps readers entertained
and the Gummy Monster villain, along
with his servants Bing and Ding, serve
to heighten suspense.
Kalia started writing the book about
two years ago, and it was published in

June. Her mother served as inspiration

to write the book after seeing a special
writing talent within her daughter.
I was just thinking and the idea came
to my mind, said Kalia. It was a lot of
fun.
The youngster collaborated with a designer for eight
months to design the book
cover and pictures within
the book. To date, she has
given copies of the book
to teachers and principals
within Strathmore schools.
She has also given copies
to school libraries and local
libraries and plans to give
more copies to families and
friends.
In 2014, Kalia wrote a short story
titled Family which appeared in the
book On the Bus to Wonderland published by Young Writers of Canada.

Filipino basketball team readies for new season

ANDREA ROBERTS

The Strathmore Filipino Canadian Associations basketball team is gearing up
for another season starting sometime in
mid-August.
The team finished second last season
at the league championship. This season,
they will be joined by some players from
the Calgary Filipino associations.
Actually the last time we had a solid
group here in Strathmore, we were composed only of Strathmore players, said

NONIE HALL AGENT

403-934-0420

nonie.hall@shaw.ca

104 - 3rd Avenue,

Ricky Valencia, vice president of the

Strathmore Filipino Canadian Association. But now some players didnt show
up on the day of the game because they
had to work, and then we find that some
of the Filipino players in Calgary want to
join with us.
The team will play a series of roughly
10 games over the upcoming season with
the hopes of making it to the championship. Although they play their games in
Calgary, they practice in Strathmore. But
finding courts on which to practice has
been a challenge.

Basketball is a popular sport in the

Philippines, and Valencia said many of
those who moved to Canada brought
their love for the sport to their new
country. In addition, many of them are
branching out and participating in other
sports such as golf and hockey.
While the Strathmore Filipino Canadian Association doesnt currently have
any teams for these sports, they are hoping to build a stronger relationship with
the Town of Strathmore by doing more
volunteer work in the community and
making themselves more visible.

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

Local archer Dianne Hunter
recently picked out her team
of eight First Nations teenagers
who will represent Alberta in
the North American Indigenous
Games held in Toronto next
year.
Most members of the team,
who range in age from 14 to 18,
are new to the sport of competitive archery, while only one of
them has a background in competitive archery.
I am teaching them archery,
said Hunter. They have to train
as normal athletes. So each of
them have a workout schedule
and they work with us. I will
also get them shooting locally
with me as much as I can.
The team will train with Hunter and her two children, and
will be shooting at 3D targets.
While Hunter has been hunting her whole life, she started
competing in archery about one
year ago for more of a challenge.
She wanted to hone her hunting
skills but found she enjoyed the
competitive side of the sport.
This will be her first time
coaching this team. She said the
reason she is doing so is because she enjoys volunteering
as well as seeing youth succeed.
She believes the team will
help each of the youths with
their self-esteem as well as make
them into ambassadors for each
of their bands.
I am a very holistic person,
she said. The way I look at it
would just be to better their
reserve and actually go and be
a great example to the rest on
the reserve. It would also be for
them to feel good, to do good.
While Hunter is happy with
the team, she is looking for
funding for them to help pay
for travel expenses as well as
uniforms and equipment. A GoFundMe page has been set up to
help offset the costs.

Hitch up for cancer ride

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

The Blackfoot Crossing
Cancer Ride returns this
year with the goal of raising
money for the Alberta Cancer
Foundation on Aug. 28
Last year, the first-time
event raised over $2,000, and
involved three wagons and
17 riders. This year, organizers are hoping for similar
numbers.
This started because I
couldnt find any cancer rides
down here to join in on, said
Rhonda Leger, the organizer
of the event. I had family
members lost due to cancer
so I was trying to incorporate
that into the ride as well.
Siksika Nation hosts the
event and participants will be
able to enjoy traditional native food such as berry soup,
a stew made of rice and cabbage, and Leger is hoping
they will also be able to have
some fried bread.
A native dancer will give
a small dance demonstration and will perform a tradi-

tional native blessing, asking

the spirits to guide the riders
through the land.
The ride will begin at the
top of the hill and head
down to the Blackfoot Crossing where Treaty 7 was
signed in 1877. They will
then continue alongside the
Bow River where the 2013
floods destroyed the old rodeo grounds.
The ride should take up
half of the morning and
Leger said any level of rider
can take part in the event
or take a ride on one of the
wagons. She is also hoping
for more donations or prizes
for a silent auction.
I just look forward to seeing everyone out there for the
ride because it doesnt matter
if you can ride. It is a ride to
have fun. It is a ride to try to
beat this horrible disease.
For more information or
to make a donation, visit the
Facebook page (Blackfoot
Crossing Cancer Ride), or
contact Rhonda Leger at 403499-9733 or by e-mail (pidwer12@gmail.com).

Separate School Board in Calgary. Lydia loved teaching, especially little children. After retiring from teaching, she established the babysitting room at St. Cecilias and looked after children during Mass. Lydia was
a devout Catholic and was very proud to be a member
of the CWL for 70 years and for being honoured at St.
Cecilias 50th Anniversary. Lydia was predeceased
by her son Howard in 1974, her parents Nick Hertz
and Rose Hertz plus 4 siblings: Rosie Hertz, Emily
Buchanan, Marjorie Crawford and Ralph Hertz. Lydia
is survived by her children Gordon Biblow, Twylla
Tyson, Karen Hunter (Dale) and Linley Biblow and
grandchildren Dustin, Nick (Janelle), Adelita (Hunter),
Erin and Levi and her siblings Dorothy Smigelski and
Danny Hertz (Bonnie) along with an extended family
of relatives. Funeral services were held on August 4,
2016 at St. Cecilias Roman Catholic Parish. If desired, donations can be made to St. Cecilias (321 90th Avenue SE, Calgary T2J 0A1). The family wishes
to thank the Staff at the Southwood Care Centre Hospice for the wonderful care Lydia received over the
past 2 months. To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.

It is with great sadness that we announce Bills

passing at the age of 86 at the Foothills Hospital
surrounded by his family. Loved ones will miss his
kindness, humour, and that he freely gave his love
and time. He and Ellie loved to travel and had many
laughs with family and friends along the way. Bill
was a Charter Member of the Carseland Lions Club
and also volunteered for many years for the Calgary
Stampede Show Band and the International Committee, as well as countless hours in the community.
Born in Calgary, Bill and his mother moved to Cluny,
AB when he was an infant. He attended school in
Gleichen and Cluny. He finished High School in
Carseland, then attended the Institute of Technology,
taking Agricultural Mechanics where he later taught
for a decade. He courted and married the beautiful
Eleanor Lausen in 1959, then lived on the farm close
to Carseland where the couple raised three children.
They moved from the farm to Strathmore in 2006.
Bill is predeceased by his mother, Ellen Elizabeth
Alexander, and the man he considered a father,
Keith Robson. He will be missed by his wife, Ellie;
daughter Susan Eadie (Dwayne), son Bruce Taylor
(Eugene), and daughter Nancy Kettenbach (Ray).
His granddaughters, Kara Sallows (Brad) and Megan
Finch (Scott), and his grandson, Riley Kettenbach,
will miss him dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held
on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the Carseland
Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Bill
asked for any donations to be made directly to the
Wheatland Hospice Society. (Box 2154, Strathmore,
AB, T1P 1K2). To send condolences, please visit
Bills obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

DUBRICK,

Myrna Elaine
In Loving Memory of Myrna Elaine Dubrick who left us to be with the Lord
on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. She was
with members of her family and a close friend as she
moved peacefully into the Lords loving care. She was
pre-deceased by her sister Vivian; her mother Ruth
and her father Mel. She is survived by her husband
Shaun and her six children; Wayne (Sharon), Glen
(Terry), Kevin, Stacey, Kim and Shari (Troy); sisters
Marion (Ken) and Diane (Ron); grandchildren Ryan,
Stephen (Arlen), Bobby, Jacqueline (Marlin), Ashley
(Alex), Brandon, Devon, Cassidy and Josh; as well as
her great-grandchildren Aurora, Isabell and Cooper.
At 82, she had lived a long, full life with many stories
and memories to share. She would not want us to
grieve but to live with the happy memories. A Funeral
Service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at
Strathmore Alliance Church (325 1st Ave, Strathmore,
AB) at 1:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow after the
internment service. Viewing and visitation will be held
on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Wheatland Funeral Home (202 Lakeside Blvd, Strathmore).
To send condolences, please visit Myrnas obituary at
