COMING MARCH 2009

A.B.C. WARRIORS:
THE SHADOW WARRIORS
By Pat Mills, Carlos Ezquerra & Henry Flint
Mars, the far future. War droids created for a conflict that
ended centuries ago, the A.B.C. Warriors are resistant to
Atomic, Bacterial and Chemical warfare. Originally recruited
to bring peace to the frontier colony worlds of Mars, the Meknificent Seven comprise leader Hammerstein, the mystical
Deadlock, sharp-shooter Joe Pineapples, the treacherous
Blackblood, dim-witted Mek-Quake, the brutal Mongrol and
the recently revived
Steelhorn. Following several years wandering the galaxy
the Warriors return to Mars to find the planet itself has turned
against the human terraformers. Their efforts to increase the
peace allowed the native Martians to live in harmony with
the Terrans but now civil war has broken out...

Every story is usually a begat in the comic business
and nothing demonstrates this more clearly than how the
Meknificent Seven originated. The serial was, of course,
a begat from my earlier Ro-Busters, but also from three
other key sources.
The first source was Kevin ONeill and Jack Adrians
Mek-Memoirs. I had been looking for a science-fiction
orientated art editor on 2000 AD and Kevin showed me
his prophetic pages of robot future-war mayhem. They
featured wide-screen landscapes of US army-controlled
robots devastating the Earth. Those images got him the
job on 2000 AD and later inspired my first ABC Warriors
story drawn by Kevin. To my knowledge, Mek-Memoirs has
never seen the light of day, but that first story is drawn in
a similar epic style.
The second source was Battle comics Rat Pack created
by Gerry Finley-Day and Carlos Ezquerra. Gerrys incredible
talent was particularly apparent on Rat Pack a comic
version of The Dirty Dozen, a film about criminal soldiers in
World War Two and his excellent construction suggested
a firm foundation for the Warriors. The data files on the
ABC Warriors shown in the Mike McMahon episodes were
directly inspired by his Rat Pack mug-shots. Incidentally,
there is another begat here. Because Gerry was the
founder of modern British comics through his girls comic
Tammy. Before Tammy there was zilch; only old-fashioned
male and female comics at Fleetway. But Tammy had a
revolutionary new style which heavily influenced and
directly begat Battle which begat Action which begat 2000
AD and so on.
The third source was Mekomania, a robot history of the
future I had written with robot characters depicted by Brian
Bolland, Dave Gibbons, Ian Gibson, Mike McMahon and
Kevin ONeill. It had been designed for the British coffee
table book market at a time when there were numerous
fantasy and science-fiction collections or, alternatively, as
a series of French graphic novels. There was keen interest

from publishers in both directions at the time. Dargaud,

publishers of Asterix, were particularly enthusiastic, but
we lacked the experience on how to close a deal an
artform in itself in publishing. Interestingly, this was at a
time where nobody had yet gone off to work for American
super hero comics and the British and European markets
were seen by us all as attractive and viable alternatives.
If Mekomania had found a home, I believe British comics
would have developed differently, alongside 2000 AD,
creating a new series of begats to find a wider and more
mainstream audience than we have today.
Sadly, it was not be, but many of the concepts from
Mekomania appeared in the ABC Warriors or elsewhere.
I had originally conceived Mongrol for Mekomania, but
couldnt get his story to fit the history, so I reworked the
character as one of the Meknificent Seven. Similarly,
Armageddon, a character created by Kevin and myself for
Mekomania, was a source of inspiration for Deadlock; the
name later used for the hero of our Metalzoic graphic novel
(published by DC Comics). Mike McMahons character
a human hunter called Grille became Bootleg in a
recent ABC Warriors adventure and the plot from my Dave
Gibbons story about humans sentenced to go naked in
a future paradise-prison was reworked for a Nemesis
serial.
So has the ABC Warriors begat anything since? Certainly
artist Clint Langley and myself are currently revisiting the
Meknificent Seven in The Volgan Wars to develop those
original tales in full colour. Also, I am planning a new
Savage adventure where Bill Savage will recruit seven
Resistance fighters to carry out a daring mission. And in
the same story we see the origins of the Ro-Busters as
war machines designed to defeat the Volgans. It seems we
have come full circle.

PAT MILLS

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000 AD. For the Galaxys Greatest Comic, he is the writer and co-creator of ABC
Warriors, Finn, Flesh, Nemesis the Warlock, Sline, M.A.C.H 1, Harlem Heroes and Savage. He also developed Judge Dredd
and wrote one of the early Dredd serials The Cursed Earth. He wrote Third World War for Crisis!, a politically-charged
spin-off from 2000 AD, and Black Siddha for the Judge Dredd Megazine.
Outside 2000 AD he is the writer and co-creator of the long-running classic anti-war story Charleys War, as
well as Marshal Law. He has also written for the Batman, Star Wars and Zombie World series for the US market. Currently
Mills is writing the best-selling series Requiem Vampire Knight for Editions Nickel of France with artist Olivier Ledroit,
and a spin-off series, Claudia Vampire Knight, with artist Frank Tacito. Two further French series are in production.

BRETT EWINS

Since his Future Shock debut in Prog 37, Brett Ewins has been one of the Galaxys Greatest Comics most beloved artists.
Co-creator of the classic Bad Company, Ewins has also contributed to A.B.C. Warriors, Daily Star Dredd, Judge Anderson,
Judge Dredd, Kelly, Mega-City One, Rogue Trooper, Ro-Jaws, Robo-Tales and Universal Soldier.
Beyond 2000 AD, Ewins was a co-founding editor of Deadline magazine, and co-pencilled and inked the hugely acclaimed
Skreemer series, which he co-created with writer Peter Milligan. He also created Johnny Nemo, which is now enjoying
great success in Cyberosia Publishings new US edition.

CARLOS EZQUERRA

As co-creator of Judge Dredd Carlos Ezquerra designed the classic original costume as well as visually conceptualising
Mega-City One. He also co-created Strontium Dog. He has also illustrated A.B.C. Warriors, Judge Anderson, Tharg the
Mighty, Als Baby and Cursed Eath Koburn amongst many others. Outside of the Galaxys Greatest Comic, Ezquerra first
illustrated Third World War in Crisis magazine, and has since become a regular collaborator with Garth Ennis, working
on Adventures in the Rifle Brigade, Bloody Mary, Just a Pilgrim, Condors and The Magnificent Kevin. He also pencilled
two special Preacher episodes.

DAVE GIBBONS

Dave Gibbons is one of 2000 ADs most popular artists, having co-created Harlem Heroes and Rogue Trooper. He has also
pencilled A.B.C. Warriors, Dan Dare, Judge Dredd, Mega-City One, Ro-Busters, Tharg the Mighty, Thargs Future Shocks
and Time Twisters, as well as having scripted several Rogue Trooper stories making Gibbons one of the few 2000 AD
creators to have served as writer, artist and letterer! Beyond 2000 AD, Gibbons is unquestionably best known for his work
on the award-winning classic Watchmen (with Alan Moore), but he has also drawn Batman, Doctor Who, Give Me Liberty,
Green Lantern, Superman, Star Wars and his graphic novel, The Originals.

BRENDAN McCARTHY

Brendan McCarthy was a key early artist for 2000 AD, and designed Zenith with Grant Morrison, and many of the
perennially popular ABC Warriors with Pat Mills (and others). He also illustrated Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, and Thargs
Future Shocks.
McCarthys non-2000 AD work includes Skin in Crisis, Strange Days, Paradox!, Freakwave in Vanguard Illustrated and
work for Revolver.

MIKE McMAHON

Although Mike McMahon may not have illustrated as many strips as other 2000 AD creators, his importance to the comic
cannot be overstated. It was McMahon who co-created perennial classics A.B.C. Warriors and The V.C.s, and it was also
McMahon who gave Judge Dredd his classic, defining, big boots look. Outside of the Galaxys Greatest Comic, he has
pencilled and inked Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and The Last American which he co-created with John Wagner
and Alan Grant.

KEVIN ONEILL

Kevin ONeill is a 2000 AD legend. From working as an art assistant on the very first prog, he quickly became involved
in the creative side of the comic, co-creating classics like A.B.C. Warriors, Bonjo From Beyond The Stars, Metalzoic and
Nemesis the Warlock. ONeill has also written for the comic on strips including Dash Decent, Future Shocks, One-Offs,
Tharg the Mighty, and has illustrated Future Shocks, Judge Dredd, M.A.C.H. 0, One-Offs, Ro-Busters, Ro-Jaws RoboTales, Tharg the Mighty and Torquemada. Outside the Galaxys Greatest Comic, ONeill was briefly notorious as the only
artist ever to have his work rejected wholesale by the Comics Code Authority! Happily, his notoriety quickly became fame
and acclaim, as his work on strips like Marshal Law and most recently The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen have
raised him to a very high profile. ONeills other work includes Green Lantern and Batman.
