Malaysians Seen Curbing Spending as

Living Costs Surge: Economy

Millions of middle-class Malaysians are grappling with the biggest increase in
state controlled electricity and gasoline costs since 2008, threatening
consumer spending growth and reasserting the countrys reliance on exports
this year.
Since winning a May election, Prime Minister Najib Razak has unleashed a
series of price increases to cut subsidies and improve state finances, crimping
scope for companies to boost wages while spurring inflation. The moves, from
a 14 percent jump in sugar costs in October to an 11 percent increase for
gasoline in September and an average 15 percent to 16.9 percent climb
for electricity this month, could slow private consumption growth by 0.9
percentage point in 2014, according to Alliance Financial Group Bhd. and
Malaysian Rating Corp.
Definitely its difficult, Ng Wei Keong, a project engineer with two children
aged 5 and 3, said in an interview at a December protest against another strain
on his living cost -- an increase in the annual property assessment rate in
Kuala Lumpur. My kids will be without toys, no more vacation, no new cars
and we must be very wise on spending money.
Malaysias middle class, forged during the economic boom of the early 1990s,
is bearing the brunt of the fiscal trimming as they grapple with a cocktail
of record-high property prices, elevated household borrowings, and slower pay
increases than lower-income earners. Rebounding exports are set to counter
the spending squeeze, giving Najib scope to put consumers through the

immediate pain of surging living costs as he shifts the economy toward

market-based prices for commodities and energy.
Some Pain

There will be some pain in moving towards market-based pricing of the

currently subsidized-costs of essential food items, fuel and energy, said
Suhaimi Ilias, chief economist at Maybank Investment Bank, part of the
countrys largest lender. Over the long term the economy will gain from a
generally more efficient economy.
Underscoring the threat to the domestic demand that held up growth in the
past two years as exports faltered, consumer confidence in the third quarter
fell to the weakest since 2009, according to a Malaysian Institute of Economic
Research measure. An index of consumer stocks barely rose in the second half
of 2013, gaining 0.02 percent compared with the benchmarks 5.2 percent
climb.
The headwinds to domestic demand in the near term would make Malaysias
economic growth increasingly dependent on an export recovery, Citigroup Inc.
said in a November report. The banking group predicts a 5 percent expansion
in 2014, at the lower end of the governments forecast range, as it anticipates
more fuel price increases that will cut discretionary incomes by a net 2 billion
ringgit ($608 million), or 0.2 percentage point of nominal gross domestic
product.
Sandwich Class

Those in the middle-income group, who make as little as 3,000 ringgit a

month, dont benefit as much as other segments from planned government
handouts or income tax cuts, said Wan Saiful Wan Jan, chief executive officer

at the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs, a Kuala Lumpur-based

think tank.
Malaysian families who earn 3,000 ringgit to 4,999 ringgit a month made up
27.8 percent of households in the population of about 30 million, according to
government data for 2012, up from 4 percent in 1989. About 39 percent of
households fall below that bracket, while the remainder of the middle class
and the highest income groups -- those earning 5,000 ringgit and above - account for 33.6 percent.
Inflation Pressure

The bottom 40 percent is helped by the various welfare programs, while the
top 5 percent will benefit from the trend to reduce income tax and they are
generally better off in a liberalizing economy, Wan Saiful said in an interview.
For the middle income group, nothing has been done to help them but there
are so many things that they cant afford anymore.
Inflation in Southeast Asias No. 3 economy may accelerate to 2.9 percent this
year and a seven-year high of 3.3 percent in 2015, when Najib plans to
introduce a new consumption tax, according to Bloomberg surveys. In
contrast, the Malaysian Employers Federationestimates lower salary increases
and bonuses in 2014 in the private sector as business costs rise.
The faster inflation rate amid slower income rise erodes purchasing power,
which will impact the consumer spending part of GDP, said Maybanks
Suhaimi. He predicts the central bank will keep interest rates unchanged even
as inflation reaches 3.5 percent in 2014, to avoid further deflating consumer
sentiment. The risk to growth is pretty much coming from consumers.

Pay Increases

Executives will get a 5.63 percent average increase in salaries, down from 6.31
percent in 2013, and non-executives will get a 5.65 percent raise from 6.7 last
year, according to an MEF survey of 257 companies. Lower-paid workers will
fare better -- in addition to benefiting from a minimum wage, non-executives
will get a bigger bonus this year while executives will get a smaller payout.
Government data show that the most well educated people in the workforce
got the smallest wage increase in the two years through 2012.
What we earn cannot cope with the rising cost of living, said Selena Tay, a
freelance writer in her 40s who lives with and supports her elderly parents.
She plans to cut out purchases of clothes, shoes, bags to save money for food.
The government is strangling us. We are now scared to read the daily
newspaper because every day, the price of something is going up.

Najib is making a political gamble as he starts to dismantle decades of subsidies to
address fiscal risks identified by Fitch Ratings, which cut Malaysias credit outlook in
July. Within months of the May election that returned his ruling Barisan Nasional
coalition to power without winning the popular vote for the first time, he scrapped
the sugar subsidy and unveiled plans for a goods and services tax at the risk of
further alienating the urban voters who turned against him.

The next election is due by about mid-2018. Najibs predecessor Abdullah

Ahmad Badawi, who introduced even bigger increases in electricity and fuel
prices after the 2008 general election, stepped down to make way for Najib
mid-term in early 2009.

Forty-nine percent of respondents in a survey released in December say the

country is heading in the wrong direction, with rising living costs and
unfavorable economic conditions cited as the main reasons, according to the
Merdeka Center for Opinion Research.
Some Malaysians have already taken to public protests against the price
increases. In December, hundreds gathered in front of the city council office in
Kuala Lumpur to rally against an increase in property taxes. On New Years
Eve, about 4,000 people joined an illegal protest in the capital to demand
lower living costs, disrupting a countdown concert, Bernama reported.
My biggest worry is, financial difficulty will lead to ethnic tension, said Wan
Saiful. You go to a Malay area in Kuala Lumpur, Kampung Baru or Sentul,
you already get the sentiment that they are accusing the Chinese of taking
away all their economic wealth. If you go to poorer Chinese area in Cheras,
Balakong, the sentiment youll get is the ethnic Chinese will say of course they
are poor, because the ethnic Malays are the ones being helped by the
government.

What is the standard cost of living in Malaysia?

It depends on the area you're going to live in. I'll give you the approximate cost of 2 major
cities where people from abroad usually settle in.
Assumptions taken in to consideration:
- Cost for one person
- You're an average spender
- Since you mention living and not visiting, I'll assume you're going to use the kitchen.
Currency: MYR (Malaysian Ringgit)
1 USD = 3.16 MYR

Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Jaya (PJ): My favorite city. I've spend most of my good years in this place.
Kuala Lumpur (KL): The capital of Malaysia and the most happening city. One does not
simply go to Malaysia and not visit KL. Petronas towers, China town, Little India and many
more tourist attractions.
Living here is simply awesome, but it's crowded.. very crowded.
Monthly cost of living in PJ / KL :
MYR 2500-3500 (Approx)
Lets start with the break down:
Living:
House:
It's very difficult to find a house here, since they are the first choice for families. If you're
lucky to find a double storey house, it can cost from 2,000 MYR- 2,500 MYR. These houses
have 5-6 bedrooms and if you rent a house, you can further rent out the bedrooms to
students or friends. Each room pays around 400-500 MYR.
Condominium apartment:
Renting an entire apartment for a single person can be a little expensive if your budget is
around below 2.5k MYR. The cost depends on the number of bedrooms in each apartment.
A standard rule of 3+1+1/2 applies (3 months advance rental + current month rental + half
month utility charges)when you rent any apartment or house for the first time. Now, to the
costs:
You can find 3 or 4 bedroom apartments in PJ and KL in good localities. 4 bedroom ranges
from 2000 - 2500 MYR and 3 bedroom from 1500-2000
Note: I'm assuming you're going to share the apartment. Please do the final calculation if
you're planning to rent the entire apartment.
Studio Apartment:
I live in a studio apartment. It's very comfortable. Tiny, cozy and perfect size for someone
living alone. The rent varies upon the condominium. It can vary from 1200 MYR- 2000
MYR.
Below is a picture of my apartment. It's small, and fit for one. I pay 1,550 MYR excluding
bills.
Bills:
Your monthly bill comes up to 300 - 400 MYR (approx)

60-80 MYR: Electricity

150 MYR: Internet
50 MYR: Astro TV channels
20 MYR: Water
50-60 : Misc expenses
Transportation:
Important tips while taking a taxi:
- Never take a taxi which gives you a pre-determined fare.
- Book taxi from myteksi application or call the service (Sunlight taxi)
- Do not take a taxi which is already standing, instead stop a vacant moving one.
It is very easy to find public transportation in PJ and KL. Rapid KL and Metro buses can be
found easily. Also, train stations, Monorails are very easily accessible.
The only difference in PJ and KL is the transportation cost.
If you're not driving and taking a taxi, it is cheaper since KL is the center of the destination
you would want to be at, and if you're driving, it cuts petrol cost.
Food:
Your monthly expense might come up to 400-500 MYR (approx)
If you occasionally eat outside, and cook sometimes, here's what you need to know.
There are many Mamak restaurants on every street. Mamak restaurant means it is owned by
Muslim Tamilians. They have variety of Indian curries, soups, and Malay food. The food
here is really good, clean, delicious and cheap.
A full meal with a drink won't cost more than 15MYR
Daily food expense: 30-50 MYR. Monthly: 500 MYR
If you go shopping for groceries: 100-200 MYR a month.

Since you're living in KL, you will be going out a lot. Lets keep 500 MYR for your unknown
costs. It is really difficult to maintain cost when living in a place full of temptations.
Total monthly cost of living in Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur :
2500 MYR - 3500 MYR (approx)

As a Singaporean who lives here, I am a bit shocked by the price tag on imported items.
Although many things are cheaper, such as houses, petrol and cars, if you want mid to high
end clothing, food, alcohol... it will blow your mind. Especially if you earn the local currency.
A small block of good cheese costs more than RM 30. Fancy that. It is possible to live very
cheaply here though, if you are willing to live with less luxury.
For 1 Person
Hawker centre food: RM 4 - 6 (comparable to Singapore, even after converting)
Lower mid range restaurant: RM 30
Mid range restaurant: RM 50
High end restaurant: RM >80
Room in a house: RM 500
Room in an area like Bangsar: RM 800
Master Bedroom in an area like Bangsar: RM 1500
Work shirt from Uniqlo/Zara/other chain fashion: RM >90
I am also shocked by how expensive fine dining is in KL. A comparable meal at an averagely
nice French restaurant would cost as much, and not be as good, as a really good one in
Singapore or elsewhere. "Luxury" definitely commands a premium here.

A ballpark estimate for a single person living in Kuala Lumpur would be around RM1200 2000, assuming it's just living expenses.
Here's my baseline budget breakdown (modeled after my personal expenses):
Rent (medium room, Wangsa Maju area): RM500
Food: 30 x RM15 = RM450
Utilities (Water and electricity): RM50
Internet: RM60
Transport (Public transport only): RM200
=======================
TOTAL: RM1260
Ownership of a car is not optional for certain professions or if the place of work does not
have public transport facilities, which will kick you back for another RM600 or so.

I endorse this article - Good salary in Malaysia

In a nutshell, heres my opinion (and just that my opinion; other expats experiences are
doubtlessly very different). You can get by and have a reasonably comfortable life here for
RM2,500 a month. You will not live in a fancy place, you certainly wont be driving an
imported car, and you wont be eating in Western chain restaurants three times a week.
But you can live in a decent place with air-conditioning, have satellite TV, eat local foods
most of the time, and not have to worry at all about money.
Earning even a little more can make a big difference, though, and if youre paid in the
RM3,500 to 4,000 range, you can enjoy a relatively comfortable lifestyle and not have to
worry a lot about your spending at all. Again, you wont be able to indulge in designer
imports and fancy meals every day, but you can easily afford to treat yourself somewhat
regularly. RM5,000-6,000 a month will allow you a broad swath of housing options and
a comfortable lifestyle. At that income level, you can easily afford a RM2,000-a-month
place, which goes a long way in many parts of the city (but not all).

Some people write in, wondering if theyll possibly be able to make ends meet on their
RM12,000-a-month package theyve been offered. With that salary, you can live very well
in KL unless you have a bunch of kids or a designer clothing fetish or something.
There is, frankly, a lot of economic disparity in KL, and its reflected in the costs of living.
For almost all goods, the range of prices can be extreme. Rents go from RM400 to
RM20,000 per month. You can spend RM120 a head for a meal with wine at a nice
restaurant, or you can get a meal at a local food stall for RM4. A trip to the local grocery
store can cost RM50 or RM300. For my part, life in KL was amusingly cheap only when I
converted prices into US dollars, which I stopped doing once my income started being
paid in ringgits.
Cars are breathtakingly expensive in Malaysia relative to income, but after the initial
acquistion, driving them is fairly cheap (maintenance, road tax, etc.). Another expensive
indulgence here is drinking. A bottle of imported vodka is about 3 times more expensive
here relative to income than in the US.
So to give you a roundabout answer, if your income is below RM2,500 a month, youll
have to live pretty frugally (and many people here subsist on considerably less). RM2,500
to RM4,000 will get you further, and anything above RM5,000 will afford you a pretty
comfortable life in KL.

These are the few things which you must need:

Home - Take it on rent. Options: Furnished, un-furnished, room, house, # of rooms. Highly
depends what is your location. (Advice: travel to a nearby small town for cheaper home)
Travelling - Personal Car is best option. Public transport depends on the area. Taxi is very
expensive.
Food - If you can eat Malay food, awesome. 5RM is enough. Otherwise depends on the place
and type of food you eat. If you can cook 50RM for week average food.
Shopping - Its generally expensive.

Bills - They're also not major part of expenses.

Taxes - Its also low compared to expensive cities or developed countries of the world.
So you can survive in 1000RM also, but for low budget living 4000RM and good living
6000+

It depends on where you live. While I was in Sg Petani, Kedah and earned about RM
2000/month, I lived a good life, not luxurious but it was more than enough. Then I moved
to Kuantan, Pahang earning RM3000/month and it wasnt enough to keep the same life
style. Now, I am married with wive and a kid, living in Kuala Lumpur and Rm5000/month..
Hard to say, well it is just enough because my wife is working too. Rm5000. Overall, it is all
about location and life style. My friend lives comfortably with his wive and kids in Kedah
with just RM2500 salary, whereas another friend, here in KL keep complaining about his
finacial problem despite of his monthly RM 8000 income.
The cost of living mostly depends on your lifestyle. Do you plan to send your kids to an
international school? Do you plan to rent in an upscale location with expats? Do you refuse
to eat local food? Are you going to buy a car or use public transport?
It also depends on your salary in Malaysia and where you are coming from. I am from the
Philippines, and I see that it is actually cheaper to live in Kuala Lumpur than in good

locations in Metro Manila -- cheaper food, cheaper rent, cheaper electricity bills, faster
internet, even lower income tax. As an expat, my salary was considered much higher
compared to the local salary.

#Sandeep,
Since most of your high expenses are covered by your company, you and your family should
able to live comfortably in Malaysia for RM10,000 per month.. So, on the safe side.. I will say
50% savings can be allocated.. as for taxes, talk to your company. They have way to optimise
your tax savings.
Good luck. Dennon.

If I make as much money as u do I wont be sharing an apartment, LOL. Most expat dont

unreliable, and the traffic jam is bad as well. Anyway if you dont purchase a car, I believe you

Reading from the previous post I noticed the concerns are mainly made up of 2 categories:
1) Sufficiency of salary to live in KL
Based on my experience in KL (close to 40 years of local experience, yes I'm a local
Malaysian), here are my personal opinion:
a) If you are a student (undergrad or postgrad), the "salary", scholarship or allowance that you
receive may structured to cover your daily necessity for living. Don't expect to have a lavish

lifestyle no matter where you are in the world when you are under such sponsored scheme.
b) Minimum salary in Malaysia is MYR900/month. A Malaysia citizen may earn MYR1200 MYR1800/month working in McDonalds, hair saloon, Pizza hut, restaurant waiter, sales
assistant in retail shopping mall or general operators. These people usually stay with the
parents with minimum family burden.
c) University freshgrad, average earning around MYR1500-MYR3000/month. They need to start
make a good financial planning to achieve a reasonable living standard either on their own or
live with family.
d) Average 5-8 years skilled/experience grads or specialist technician makes MYR3000 MYR6000/month. Where personally I think this is the median income in KL. You won't have a
luxury lifestyle in KL but you live like majority of people in KL, even with a small family. Well
budgeting allow you to dine in medium-high class restaurant once in a week.
e) I consider MYR6k to MYR10k/month as medium-high level of income. You may enjoy a little
more options in your lifestyle, such as better car/house/meal and oversea travelling if you
planned well.
f) for those who make MYR10k-15k/month, I consider this is a moderate comfortable income in
KL if you planned well.
The above is a benchmark for citizen live in KL, exclude children international schooling fee
(which will cost a bomb).
How much you can save? Depending on your lifestyle and financial planning. We don't expect
people come to KL to live like a robot with fixed routine and eating same dish and doing the
same thing everyday. KL is a vibrant city and full of excitement.
2) Job recommendation / offers
I think this is a cost of living index website and posting such question will usually receive very
minimal respond.
#Yap on Aug 18, 2015 :
Kuala Lumpur or Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur & Selangor State) is relatively a very livable place
compare to a lot of capital city in the world. There are plenty of lifestyle choices with wide range
of price tag on it.
For individual without family:
You can have a cup of coffee in a mamak stall cost you MYR1.50 or you can have it in a cafe
like Starbucks which cost you MYR15.00. You can buy a loaf of Gardenia bread that cost
MYR2.40 for 2-3 days breakfast (with some fruit jam/butter) or you can dine in high end
restaurant for about MYR50 for a course of dim sum. Transport may be a challenge and usually
most of the citizen own a car. Car is very expansive here -- entry level 1.0L new local car (like
Perodua Axia) cost around MYR25k, Japanese small car (1.5L) starting from MYR70k. Suggest
to go for 5-7 years used car as a start up plan. If you don't want to queue in government clinic or
hospital, a general practice clinic will cost around MYR30-MYR120 per visit with basic medicine;
specialist hospital charges vary (consultation MYR100-MYR300; diagnostic fee vary, normal
hospitalization MYR250-500 per day). You can choose to rent a small room (around 150-200 sq
feet) in a terrace house that cost around MYR300-MYR600 / month, usually condo with facilities
will be more expansive. Entertainment highly depending on individual lifestyle and expectation.
We have free jungle trekking and waterfalls within 30KM driving distance, or you can get a VIP
seat for an F1 racing at MYR3000/ticket.
For family of 2 adults and 2 children below 16:
A 1000 sq feet 3 rooms condo without furnishing rent ranging from MYR1200 - 5000/month
depending on location in Klang Valley. Set aside minimum MYR300/month for utilities bill. Local

kindergarten (age 3-6) MYR300 - 1500/month for half day per kid; MYR800-3000/month for full
day per kid. Various International School are available, fee starting MYR40k / year to
MYR100k/year per kid. Home school or private school with international syllabus are available
for cheaper option (still need approx MYR15k-20k/year per kid). Grocery shopping: try local stuff
instead of imported one to save money (I spend on average MYR800/month to feed a family of
4, kids are not malnutrition). Local C Segment 1.6L new car cost around MYR60k. Japanese C
Segment 1.8L new car start from MYR100k.
For company sponsored executive level expat where money is not an issue:
Mont Kiara, Bangsar, KLCC are the famous areas with large expat communities. Purchase price
usually MYR1200 and above per sq feet.
Personal driver /chauffeur salary starting from MYR2500/month (you need to give him/her a car
to perform the duty); a live in Filipino maid salary starting from MYR1200 exclude one off

Hope no inflation on next month for normalizing the oil price with no more government subsidy.
Inflation is not good harming everyone including local.
Controlling inflation depends on government where Thailand do a good job whereas Indonesia
is very poor.
With falling oil price, inflation should no longer exist and deflation should come in naturally or
else it is the government problem.
Anyway, no plan to visit KL and the main reasons are because of tourist traps where
government seems not solving the old problem of tourist traps below.
list of serious tourist traps which people encountered according to the internet
1. Planting drug in luggage so coming out of the airport, you would be approached by police to
extort all your fortune for alleged bringing drug or else landing in jail is your way out.
2. Fake police encounter and this would result you losing passport and travel money
3. Dishonest taxi where involves meter running many times faster than normal meter rate,
running with luggage, robbing at knifepoint
4. Kidnapping
tourists certainly would not want to visit places where they would encounter the traps above and
tourists have choices where they would spend their money and their first choice would be a safe
destination.
Presenting police in uniform everywhere instead of letting them idle in the police station would
partly solve the problem but police also must be disciplined to be honest and do their job at least
and consequently these traps would no longer exist.
Kunming, China is a good example where you see police presence everywhere and feel very
safe.
Until these tourist traps are not resolved, tourist industry of Malaysia would be getting worse.

What i read here, almost more people asking questions than people giving answers.
Why? Because most people (usually from India, rarely from the West country) asking other
people to get cheap or free advice. If that your mind set as an expat, most likely you will get
cheap salary as well or even get scammed!
What you need is to get the "Insider's Guide to Malaysia for Expat" ebook. This ebook is
specifically for expat who like to work in Malaysia;
1.Cost of Living (100+ everyday items price typically for expats)
2.Jobs opportunity (100+ listing companies for expats, and how to get your spouse a job too)
3.Salary expectation (best job salary for you)
4.Housing (best/inexpensive place to live popular among expats)
and how not to get scammed and live successfully as an expat in Malaysia.
It's up to you, afraid to pay for real advice and trying to get free advice , you should ready to get

cheap salary and suffer/regret later...

Since accommodation is provided, the mentioned MYR(4200) will be sufficient for daily
expenses and can save more than 500 MYR per month. I think around 2000 MYR can be saved

(even more, if you control on expenses)

on another note INR 42000 is NOT equal to MYR 4200. INR 42,000 is ~= 2400 MYR.

Hello,
I got a job in Selangor - Cyberjaya with an offer of RM 3500. I am married and my wife (no
children as of now) is currently working as an education counselor in India. I am a Software
Engineer and once we relocate,
1. Would RM 3500 enough to survive and save in Malaysia?
2. How hard would it be to find a job as a education counselor in Malaysia as my wife would like
to continue with the job?
If I press hard, I can convince the firm to cover Medical but apart from that I have to accomodate
myself on my own.
Kindly, let me know the average cost of living as well as good places to rent a moderate (~ 750
sq ft) 1 BHK flat with amenities like 24 hr power supply and water, fully furnished.
Regards,
Lokesh

Back in March 2013, the 2012 Household Income Survey announced that the Malaysian
households monthly income rose from RM4025 in 2009 to RM5000 in 2012. Its a 7.2 per
cent increase in total, and it was even announced that all states in Malaysia recorded better
average monthly household incomes with Kuala Lumpur leading with the highest growth of
14.9 per cent from RM5488 to RM8586. Overall, the increase is a positive one, with credits
due to stable and strong economy.
Yet with the prices of everyday items rising, especially since the petrol price hikes, the
significance of this means very little as our spending power remains weak. But are we really
that worse off? We took a look at how our spending power compares to some other
countries.
Average monthly income across the globe

While the current economy is rising slowly, its not without its share of obstacles and
troubles. Heres a chart on the average monthly income in four countries, including
Malaysia.

Country
Malaysia
United States of America
United Kingdom
Singapore

Average Monthly Income in 2012

RM5000 (or RM8586 in Kuala Lumpur)
US$4251 (RM13965)
2796 (RM15064)
S$7570 (RM19551)

Here are some interesting notes about the average monthly income in these different
countries. In America, while the average monthly income is slowly rising in the past years, it
is considered flat. These numbers show that Americans are actually earning much less than
their average monthly income back in 1989, which was US$4306 (RM14145). As one
American aptly described; it is a loss of a generation of economic gains for America.
The United Kingdom isnt doing too well either due to high energy prices, making their
current average monthly income the lowest in three years. In reality, household spending
power in the UK has been slashed for while they do have a total income of 699 (RM3766)
a week; they are left with just 155 (RM835) after paying bills and taxes.
Singapore is the only country thats average monthly income has been growing, with it
being at S$7570, an increase in the past five years.
Spending power in Malaysia vs. other countries
Despite the rise of Malaysias average monthly income, the cost of most items in Malaysia
remains high and its citizens continue to struggle to support families and themselves. But
even so, branded coffee such as Starbucks continues to be popular despite the price hike
with an average price of RM12. In America, the price of a normal Starbucks costs roughly
US$1.85 (RM6), which is significantly cheaper compared to their monthly income for sure.
Even so, it was announced that Starbucks coffee prices would rise by 10 cents, showing
that even America isnt immune to the rising prices.
Eating out is also a problem here in Malaysia. An average meal costs about RM8 to RM10
here, which takes up to RM600 or more per month. A Big Mac at McDonalds costs RM7.95
a-la carte, while in the UK its 3.50 (RM19). In terms of amount, it may seem like a
reasonable price for a meal. But based on the earlier deductions, UK citizens only have
155 to spend, so they dont have the pleasure to buy Big Macs whenever they please.
Of course, not all countries are having it as tough as Malaysians. While still generally an
expensive country, the average monthly income for Singaporeans allows them to spend a
lot more. Whilst hawker fare in Malaysia costs RM5-6; the conversion is 1:1 as
Singaporean hawker food can also cost SGD5-6 (RM13-16). So if in terms of money value
based on food purchases alone, were almost as good (or bad) as Singapore.
A Malaysian Dilemma

The situation in Malaysia isnt ideal, and we all wish we could have the same sort of
spending power as other countries. But on the bigger perspective, Malaysians arent the
only ones having it tough. Though yes, there are still many ways of which Malaysia is
definitely lacking and undoubtedly a number of items 10 cents, showing that even America
isnt immune to the rising prices.
