RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

Introduction
This user guide describes the purpose, characteristics, functioning principles, setting up and configuring the RG1000 GATEWAY. This guide is aimed at engineers responsible for the installation and maintenance of SmartPTT
dispatch system and the MOTOTRBO equipment.
It is assumed that users of this guide who will set up the RG-1000 GATEWAY, are familiar with the following:
The principles of building IP-networks and radio networks using MOTOTRBO equipment produced by Motorola,
and
SmartPTT software developed by Elcomplus.

RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

1 System purpose
The RG-1000 GATEWAY is used in SmartPTT dispatch systems for remote control of MOTOTRBO control
station(s) or radios through the SmartPTT Radioserver (hereinafter referred to as radioserver) in the corporate IP
network or Internet. It is required to use MOTOTRBO DM 46xx/DM 44xx, XiR M86xx, DGM 8xxx/DGM 5xxx, and
XPR 55xx/XPR 53xx series mobile radios as control stations.
The usage of the RG-1000 GATEWAY is an alternative to direct connection of control stations to the radioserver
via a USB interface.
The RG-1000 GATEWAY provides the conversion of audio signals and radio control commands to IP packets
and the transmission of these packets over the network.
The figure below shows an example of remote control using an RG-1000 GATEWAY.

Fig. 1 Remote connection of the MOTOTRBO control stations to SmartPTT dispatch system

RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

2 System structure
The system of remote management of the control station consists of the following components:
RG-1000 GATEWAY,
radio connected to the RG-1000 GATEWAY, and
SmartPTT software based on ClientServer technology.
The RG-1000 GATEWAYs are connected to the SmartPTT server-based application, which manages the RG1000 GATEWAY, and interact with this application. For IP network connection, RG-1000 GATEWAY has the
10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet interface with auto detection of the cable type. For the interaction between the
system components, the RG-1000 GATEWAY and radioserver get a static IP address and the TCP and UDP/RTP
port numbers, which are used for the radio control commands and audio transmission from the dispatch console.
The RG-1000 GATEWAY can be used in the following cases:
As a remote dispatcher's workplace outstation in digital networks without repeaters (Direct Mode
communication).
In the conventional or trunking MOTOTRBO networks, where the direct IP connection to the repeaters is
unavailable.
When the connection to the repeaters in MOTOTRBO networks is based on the hybrid scheme, where the data
interchange is performed via the NAI interface of the repeaters and the voice data transmissionvia the pool
of the control stations.
This system offers the following advantages:
It allows you to organize the dispatching system in the networks, where the direct connection of the dispatching
system to the MOTOTRBO repeaters via the IP network is unavailable.
It allows you not to place radioserver close to the control stations within the radio network coverage area.
It allows you to avoid interference and induced noise between neighboring control stations.
When planning the system, it is required to take into account the packet delivery delay in the IP network, which
causes the corresponding radio response delay to the control commands and voice data transmission.
Note: It is recommended to connect the RG-1000 GATEWAY to several servers in the data acquisition mode
only.

3 Structure and operating principle

The simplest configuration includes the remote RG-1000 GATEWAY with one connected control station,
radioserver and the dispatch console.
The dispatch console does not interact directly with the RG-1000 GATEWAY. Instead, the dispatch console
transmits data and audio to the radioserver, which then transmits them to the RG-1000 GATEWAY.
The interaction between the dispatch console and the radioserver is not considered in this document, as it is
described in detail in the corresponding SmartPTT software documentation.
The operating principle of the RG-1000 GATEWAY is based on the following elements:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Receiving and transmitting radio control commands intended for the management of the control station.
Receiving and transmitting the audio signals.
Transforming the radio control commands and audio signals into the asynchronous flow of digital data.
Encoding of the asynchronous flow of digital data and its transmission to the radioserver via IP network.

To work through the IP network, the RG-1000 GATEWAY and radioserver are given static IP addresses. After the
connection is made, the IP communication channel is established that provides the transmission of the following
data via the UDP protocol:
radio control commands between the control station and the radioserver;
audio signals from the radio receiver and from the microphone of the dispatch console.
The radioserver may be host multiple number of RG-1000 GATEWAYs. Their number is limited only by the
license conditions or by the technical constraints of the communication channels.
To establish the IP communication channels between the RG-1000 GATEWAY and radioserver, the TCP protocol
and UDP/RTP protocols are used. The TCP protocol serves to transmit the radio control commands. The RTP
protocol is used to transmit audio, registration messages (ARS), short text messages (TMS), etc.
To separate the channels on the RG-1000 GATEWAY, each channel is assigned a corresponding IP address
and UDP/TCP port number from a range of 1024...65536. When the IP channels of the RG-1000 GATEWAY
have equal values of IP address and UDP port, the connection is performed in tandem on idle IP channels.
To process the signals of the radio audio path, compression is used in the RG-1000 GATEWAY. The built-in
compressor receives and transmits audio signals using 64 kbps Mu-Law PCM encoding.

4 Installation and connection

4.1 Installation
Before installing the RG-1000 GATEWAY, it is required to perform a visual inspection of the delivery set in order
to detect the mechanical damages of the casing or connection elements. Before connecting a radio, it is required
to preset the RG-1000 GATEWAY interface. When connecting a radio, use the interface cable from the delivery
set only.
RG-1000 GATEWAY can be placed on its rubber feet or can be attached to any vertical or horizontal surfaces.
For rigid attachment of the RG-1000 GATEWAY to the surfaces, use the brackets from the delivery set. A radio
may be fixed on the upper housing cover with the use of a standard radio bracket.
The external parts, that are fastened to the RG-1000 GATEWAY casing, must be attached to the RG-1000
GATEWAY with the screws from the delivery set only. Longer screws may damage the board or its elements. The
areas of mounting the clamping elements to the RG-1000 GATEWAY casing are provided in Appendix II.
To connect a radio to the RG-1000 GATEWAY, perform the following actions:
1. Connect 13.8 VDC power supply to the RG-1000 GATEWAY. Connect the positive lead (+) of your power
supply with +V gateway power socket pin, the negative lead (-) of the power supplywith -V gateway power
socket pin. GND pin of the gateway's power socket is connected to the casing and the ground protection of
the USB interface and LAN interface.
Note: The GND pin of the RG-1000 GATEWAY must be connected to the protective ground of the facility where
it is mounted.
Note: 15VDC is the maximum supply voltage for the RG-1000 GATEWAY. Don't exceed it.
2. Preset the Motorola DM operation mode of the RG-1000 GATEWAY interface (see the Mode tab in the
Radio section of the Controller panel in RG-1000 CPS).
3. Turn off the RG-1000 GATEWAY.
Note: The RG-1000 GATEWAY and radios must receive power from a shared power source. In case of
separated power supplies, connect the negative leads of those power supplies together using the copper
wire of at least 2 mm2 section.
4. Connect the power cable of the power supply to the radio.
5. In accordance with the configured operation mode of the RG-1000 GATEWAY interface, connect the
required interface cable to the RADIO connector, which is located on the rear panel of the RG-1000
GATEWAY, and to the corresponding radio connection jack.
6. Turn on the RG-1000 GATEWAY and radio power supply. The equipment is ready for use.

4.1 Installation

14

To connect the MOTOTRBO radio to the RG-1000 GATEWAY, the interface operation mode should be
programmed for MOTOROLA DM mode. The connection to the RG-1000 GATEWAY is performed via the rear
accessory connector (see the figure below). Control commands are transmitted to the radio via USB in
accordance with the MOTOTRBO protocols.

Fig. 4 Connection diagram of the radios* to the RG-1000 GATEWAY via the RADIO interface

* The supported models of the MOTOTRBO radios are shown in Table 1.

In this figure, the following pin assignments for the control of radio apply:
Ext Mic IN: Audio signal, transmitted by the radio.
PTT IN: Radio management, starting the data transmission from the radio.
USB: The USB interface for transmission of radio control commands.
Rx Audio OUT: The signal from the radio's receiver.

4.2 Examples of radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY

connection via IP network
The RG-1000 GATEWAY network interface meets the 10BASE-T (IEEE 802.3) / 100BASE-TX (IEEE 802.3u)
specifications and may be connected to external equipment that meets the same network interface specifications.
Below you will find examples of network topologies and configurations when the RG-1000 GATEWAY and
radioserver are connected. The details about how to connect the radioserver to other equipment or to the
dispatch console are not shown in the examples.
The Ethernet port can work with both automatic and fixed cable type detection, thus, both a straight-through cable
or a crossed Ethernet cable can be used.
Both the radioserver and the RG-1000 GATEWAY must have a static IP address.

4.2 Examples of radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY connection via IP network

15

The example of the network configuration for the radioserver and the RG-1000 GATEWAY is shown in the figure
below.

Fig. 5 Connection of the radioserver to the RG-1000 GATEWAY (single radio) via the local data transmission network

In this example, the radioserver is connected to a single RG-1000 GATEWAY to manage one control station,
which is connected to the RADIO interface. Only one configured IP channel is used to transmit data to the
radioserver.
RG-1000 GATEWAY IP channel 1 is programmed to be linked to the RADIO interface, so that all control
commands and audio signals between the RG-1000 GATEWAY and the radio, connected to this interface, are
transmitted to the radioserver via IP channel 1.
The IP address and TCP (XCMP) port of the IP channel are specified in the remote control station settings.
The radioserver initiates the connection with the RG-1000 GATEWAY via TCP protocol linking to preset the IP
address and TCP port. The radioserver selects a random port from a range of 1024...65536 as the TCP source
port.
After establishing the TCP connection, the RG-1000 GATEWAY and the radioserver exchange data packets,
containing the parameters of each of them. Particularly, the RG-1000 GATEWAY sends the following settings of
the ports: audio signals and service data.
When a package with the RG-1000 GATEWAY parameters is received, the radioserver opens the required
number of UDP ports on its side: one UDP portfor audio signals, and one UDP portfor each corresponding
port of data transmission services. The numbers of these ports are also selected randomly. Then the radioserver
starts data exchange with the RG-1000 GATEWAY.
To control the connection and the entries in the NAT table, the radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY exchange
with UDP packets via the corresponding ports every 3 minutes.

RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

4.2 Examples of radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY connection via IP network

16

The step-by-step process of the connection establishment is shown in the figure below.

Fig. 6 The process of establishing the connection

between the radioserver and the RG-1000 GATEWAY

If the radio is used for voice transmission with the Mu-Law audio encoding mode, the required bandwidth is 86
kbit/s per one channel.
The required bandwidth of the channel that is used for managing the radios is about 15 kbit/s.
The total network bandwidth that is required for establishing the communication channel is calculated as follows:
The required network bandwidth = (number of IP channels * 86 kbit/s) + 15 kbit/s
If the control station is used for data exchange only with the radios (GPS and text messages), the required
bandwidth is 11 kbit/s per one channel.

RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

4.2 Examples of radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY connection via IP network

17

In this case, the total network bandwidth is calculated as follows:

The required network bandwidth = (number of IP channels * 16 kbit/s) + 15 kbit/s
The example of configuring the radioserver for its connection to two RG-1000 GATEWAYs, is shown in the figure
below. In this example, RG-1000 GATEWAY 2 manages one radio via IP channel 1.

Fig. 7 Connection of the radioserver to two RG-1000 GATEWAYs via the local data transmission network

RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

4.2 Examples of radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY connection via IP network

18

The Remote control station 1 settings on the radioserver are used to connect and manage the radio of RG-1000
GATEWAY 1, the Remote control station 2 settingsto connect and manage the radio of RG-1000 GATEWAY 2.
When more RG-1000 GATEWAYs are connected to a radioserver, they are configured correspondingly.
Each RG-1000 GATEWAY can be connected to two radioservers: primary and redundant. The RG-1000
GATEWAY IP channels can be separated by using both the port number of the TCP/UDP protocol and the IP
address of the IP channel. The diagram of the IP connections for managing one radio from two radioservers
simultaneously is shown in the figure below.

Fig. 8 Connection of two radioservers (primary and redundant) to one RG-1000 GATEWAY

A separate IP channel is configured for each radioserver. In this case, the RG-1000 GATEWAY will replicate the
data and audio signal, received by the radio, in order to transmit them to each of the radioservers. In case of a
primary radioserver failure, all data and control commands will be transmitted via the redundant radioserver.

RG-1000Radio Remote Gateway

User Guide

4.2 Examples of radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY connection via IP network

19

The IP connection in the RG-1000 GATEWAYs can be established in the following ways:
Dynamically, in this case all IP channels have the same IP addresses and port numbers. Under these
parameters, connection of the radioservers is performed serially on an idle IP channel.
Statically, in this case each IP channel has an individual IP address and/or port number (as it is shown in the
figure below).

Fig. 9 Connection of the radioserver and RG-1000 GATEWAY via the network with NAT

To operate via a public network (for example, the Internet) with the address transmission on adjacent routers, the
external interface of router 2 must have a static IP address in the gateway network while the external interface of
router 1 can have a dynamic IP address in the gateway network. In the example in figure above, router 1, the
radioserver default gateway, has the 192.168.1.1 IP address of the internal network interface and the 1.1.1.1 IP
address of the external network interface. Router 2, the default gateway of the RG-1000 GATEWAY, has the
192.168.2.1 IP address of the internal network interface and the 2.2.2.2 IP address of the external network
interface.
The radioserver and gateway are assigned the 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.2.110 static IP addresses,
respectively.
The NAT Overload (Port Address Translation) service is configured on each router. Additionally, you must
configure the rules on router 2 allowing the transmission of the TCP and UDP packets with its port numbers
arriving from the external network. These port numbers are used in the settings of the gateway to its internal IP
address, in this example it is 192.168.2.110.

20

4.3 The RG-1000 GATEWAY operation check

To check the RG-1000 GATEWAY operation, perform the following actions of the gateway configuration:
1. Make sure the RG-1000 GATEWAY is powered down (POWER switch is in '0' position) and unplugged from
any devices.
2. Connect the RG-1000 GATEWAY to the 12 VDC (the given power supply unit must be turned off).
Note: The GND pin of RG-1000 GATEWAY must be connected to the protective ground of the facility where it is
mounted.
3. Turn on the RG-1000 GATEWAY's power supply.
4. Power on the RG-1000 GATEWAY via the POWER switch on the front panel. Run RG-1000 CPS and
program the gateway network parameters and gateway interface operation mode.
5. Power down the RG-1000 GATEWAY using the POWER switch on its front panel and connect it to the IP
network equipment.
Note: Don't use Ethernet cables installed outdoors. All Ethernet cables must be installed indoors.
Note: It is high recommended to use shielded Ethernet cables.
6. Specify the IP address and TCP port of the RG-1000 GATEWAY to configure the SmartPTT radioserver.
7. Power up the RG-1000 GATEWAY using the POWER switch on its front panel and check the connection
between the RG-1000 GATEWAY and radioserver. The green LINK (PWR) led indicates a successful
connection and the availability of the IP communication channel between the RG-1000 GATEWAY and
radioserver.
8. Power down the RG-1000 GATEWAY and its power supply. Connect the radio to the RG-1000 GATEWAY
with the connection cable.
9. Connect the power cable and antenna to the radio.
10. Connect the radio's power cable to the RG-1000 GATEWAY power supply unit. The RG-1000 GATEWAY and
radio must have a common power supply unit. The negative leads of the RG-1000 GATEWAY and radio must
have a common connection point on the negative power supply terminal.
Note: Pay extreme attention to the reliability and quality of connection of the negative radio supply lead
to the power supply terminal. Its emergency shutdown can lead to the RG-1000 GATEWAY failure.
11. Power up the power supply unit of the radio station and RG-1000 GATEWAY.
12. Check the radio station availability status to remote control (DATA (ERR) led is turned off). If the led is in this
state, check the radio station remote control.

22

Fig. 11 Direct Mode communication (analog mode)

The figures above show the example of building the system in the Direct Mode communication between the radio
stations. In the given examples the RG-1000 GATEWAY manages two control radio stations, each of them
operates on an individual frequency channel and can be programmed to operate both in digital and analog
modes. If the dispatchers must be able to operate on more than two frequency channels simultaneously, more
RG-1000 GATEWAYs with radio stations can be connected to the radioserver.
In digital mode the control stations support receiving data (ARS, GPS, TMS, etc.) from the subscribers,
transmitting control commands to them and voice message exchange. In analog mode the radios support only
voice message exchange with the subscribers.
The control stations can be programmed with a number of channels and they can change to the required channel
with command from the dispatch console.
To transmit and receive the subscriber voice calls, the control stations must belong to the same talkgroups as the
radio subscribers. Private Calls between the radio subscribers will not be received by the control stations and
therefore they will not be transmitted to the radioserver and dispatch console.
You can find more detailed information on the settings of the control stations in the "MOTOTRBO SYSTEM
PLANNER" (System Topologies chapter), "SmartPTT Basic Installation&Configuration Guide" documentation
and the "SmartPTT Radioserver Configurator" software help file.

5.2 System topology with the use of a single repeater or

the IP Site Connect network

Fig. 12 Connection to radio network with the use of a single repeater or the IP Site Connect network

The figure above shows the example of building the system with a single DMR repeater or an IP Site Connect
network. When operating in an IP Site Connect network, the RG-1000 GATEWAY and control stations can be
located in the coverage area of any of the repeaters.
In order to be able to work simultaneously on both time slots, two control stations are used in this example. One of
them is programmed on the channel of the first time slot, and the second one - on the channel of the second time
slot.
You can find more detailed information on the configuration of the control stations in the "MOTOTRBO SYSTEM
PLANNER" (System Topologies chapter), "SmartPTT Basic Installation&Configuration Guide" documentation
and the "SmartPTT Radioserver Configurator" software help file.

5.3 Example of system topology in the Capacity Plus

Legacy trunking network
The figure below shows the typical topology used when building the dispatching system on the basis of the
SmartPTT software in the Capacity Plus Legacy trunking network without the use of the MOTOTRBO Network
Application Interface protocol (hereinafter referred to as the NAI protocol). The given mode is called Capacity
Plus Legacy.

Fig. 13 The example of connection to the Capacity Plus network in Legacy mode via the pool of the remote control stations

In this connection method, the radioserver is connected to the repeaters directly via an IP network. Repeaters
transmit the voice calls (both Group Call and Private Call) and data received from the radio subscribers to the
radioserver over the IP network.
The radioserver, in turn, transmits the control commands and voice calls from the dispatcher to the radio
subscribers via control stations. This transmission is performed via the pool (in the given example, 4 units) of the
remote control stations connected to several RG-1000 GATEWAYs.

25

The number of the remote control stations depends on the number of required simultaneous calls from the
dispatcher/dispatchers. In general, the number of the remote control stations must not be greater than the
number of the trunking voice channels (in the given example, 4 voice channels) in the Capacity Plus network.
More detailed information on the configuration of the control stations in Capacity Plus Legacy mode is contained
in the MOTOTRBO SYSTEM PLANNER (System Topologies chapter) and Capacity Plus Deployment
Guide (MOTOTRBO + SmartPTT) documentation and the SmartPTT Radioserver Configurator software help
file.

protocol (hybrid mode)

26

5.4 Example of system topology in the Capacity Plus

trunking network with data transmission via NAI protocol
(hybrid mode)
The system topology in the connection mode to Capacity Plus is shown in the figure below. In the given
connection mode:
data exchange with radio subscribers is carried out via the MOTOTRBO NAI protocol,
the pool of control stations is used to receive and transmit voice messages and control commands.
This mode is called hybrid mode (Capacity Plus Hybrid).

Fig. 14 The example of connection to the Capacity Plus network in Hybrid mode via the pool of the remote control stations

NAI DATA license must be installed on each repeater in the Capacity Plus network. The data exchange between
the radioserver and radio subscribers is carried out via the NAI protocol by means of the installed MNIS and
DDMS services.

For Group Calls and Private Calls, the pool of control stations is used. One single control radio station is used for
each talkgroup in which the dispatcher/dispatchers must participate. Additionally, one or more radio stations are
installed to make Private Calls to the radio subscribers. In the example above three control stations are used to
make and receive Group Calls to talkgroups 1, 2, 4. Radio station 4 is used to make Private Calls to the radio
subscribers and receive Private Calls from them.
You can find more detailed information on the configuration of the control stations in Capacity Plus Hybrid mode
in the "MOTOTRBO SYSTEM PLANNER" documentation (System Topologies chapter) and the "SmartPTT
Radioserver Configurator" software help file.

5.5 Example of system topology in the Linked Capacity

Plus trunking network with data transmission via NAI
protocol (hybrid mode)
When connecting to a Linked Capacity Plus network in hybrid mode, the principles of system topology and
building the system are the same as those when connecting to a Capacity Plus network in hybrid mode.
The remote control stations can be located in the radio coverage area of any site of the network.

5.6 Examples of using RG-1000 GETAWAY in Repeater

mode
The RG-1000 GATEWAY may be configured to work in Repeater mode, that allows to create simplest distributed
radio networks. In Repeater mode a mobile radios and\or an repeater (analog or digital) is connected to the RG1000 GATEWAY just using 5 wires: PTT, CSQ, RX Audio, TX Audio and GND. Repeater mode doesn't utilizes
signaling systems like CTCSS, DQS, MDC1200, QT, Select V, DMR, dPMR and doesn't use digital links USB\RS232 to exchange commands with Control Stations.
In Repeater mode the RG-1000 GATEWAYs communicate to each other via IP networks directly, creating
transparent links for audio streams and PTT commands. SmartPTT radioserver doesn't take part in this process.
Following pictures show how the RG-1000 GATEWAY may be used in Repeater mode.
