LEITURA COMPLEMENTAR
SIGN LANGUAGE
Because deaf people cannot hear, they use a
special language called sign language. In sign
languag e yo u use you r hand s an d bod y to
communicate, not your voice. There is a sign
alphabet, but this can be slow to use because you
need to spell every letter with your hands and
fingers. But there is also a way to show complete
words with one sign. For example, the first sign
means shoe and the second sign means Thank
you.
In sign language the important part of the
message is at the start of the sentence. So, the
sentence What is your name? is Name what is
your? in sign language.
Every country has a different sign language.
In Britain the language is called B.S.L. - British
Sign Language.

Mr. Thompson / at the office

Steve and Laura / at home

Jimmy lived in the country, and he loved playing in a

very shallow river near his house; but then his father
got a job in a big city, and he moved there with his
family.
Their new house had a garden, but the garden
was very small. Jimmy wasnt very happy.
Is there a river near here?, he asked his mother on
the first morning.
His mother answered, No, there isnt, but theres
a beautiful park near here, Jimmy, and theres a pool
in it. Well go there this afternoon. Then Jimmy was
happy.
After lunch, Jimmy and his mother went to the
park.
Jimmy wanted to walk near the pool, but there was a
sign in front of it. His mother read it to him:
WARNING: This pool is dangerous. 367 people
have fallen into it. Jimmy looked into the pool
carefully. Then he said, I cant see them.

BUGGING ASTHMA
Minor infections picked up in day care may keep kids from developing the disease. Heres
why. BY CHRISTINE GORMAN
Its called the Hygiene Hypothesis, and researchers invoke it to try to explain why the
number of children who develop asthma has grown so dramatically over the past three decades.
Bolstered by a handful of studies, the basic idea is that modern urban society is too clean for the
kids own good. A hundred years ago, childrens immune systems would have faced all kinds of
bacterial and viral infections. Today those immune systems dont know what to do in our
supersanitized environment, so they wind up attacking pollen, dust mites and other usually
innocuous substances instead. In the worst cases, a dangerous overreaction occurs that can shut
down the lungs, killing the child.

LEITURA COMPLEMENTAR
City Scenes
What are cities like in your country?
In many countries around the world, more
and more people live in cities. Cities share
many characteristics, but are also different
from country to country.
Mexico
Mexicos cities are modern
but have traditional Indian and Spanish
influences. The most important buildings are
around a cen- tral square, which also serves as
a place to meet with friends. There are outdoor
marketplaces, where people can find almost
anything they need. On Sundays, parks are a
popular place for family outings. Many people
move to Mexico City from rural areas. It has a
lot of excitement, but also lots of traffic and air
pollution.

Japan
Japans cities also have a mix
of traditional and modern characteristics. There
are tall office and apartment buildings as well as
traditional wooden houses. Many people prefer
to live near the center of cities, but because
houses there are expensive, they often
commute from suburbs. Traffic, pollution, and
crowds are problems. However, there is little
crime, and even very crowded cities have
many parks and gardens.
Australia
Although 80% of Australians
live near cities, the cities are not as large as
those in some other countries. Most people live
in houses in suburbs not in apartments. The
suburbs usually have their own churches,
schools, and shopping centers. They also have
recreational facilities. In large cities, like
Sydney, the suburbs are often far from the
center of town. Because many people commute
to work, traffic is slow and there are many traffic
jams.

The Night Tom Cruise Saved Me

Heloisa Vinhas is a Brazilian girl who lives in Los
Angeles. She works in a fast-food restaurant. One night she
left work and hurried to the bus stop. It was raining hard,
said Vinhas, and my bus was coming. I saw the car but it
was a long way off. So I ran across the street.
The car hit Vinhas while she was on the pedestrian
crossing. My head hit something and I heard a voice. A
man told me not to move. When I opened my eyes I saw a
man who looked like Tom Cruise. He was calling for an
ambulance on his cellular phone. It cant be him, I thought.
I must be dreaming. He told me he saw the woman who
was driving the
car.
The movie star went to the hospital to make sure
Heloisa was OK. He waited while Heloisa had X-rays and
the doctors treatment. When Heloisa said she wanted to
talk to Tom Cruise, one of the nurses said, Im sorry, but he
cant speak to you right now. Hes paying your hospital bill. Tom Cruise, the actor who starred in the movie,
Interview with the Vampire.
Its seven thousand dollars. The next morning Cruise and
his wife Nicole

Vinhas still recalls Cruises face. He didnt look like the vampire in the movie. He looked like

Karen is one of millions of people who have aerophobia, fear of flying.
For ten years, Karen didnt fly because she was so afraid. Every time she
thought
about flying, she panicked.

64

Of course, its natural to fear flying. In fact, many people with aerophobia are reasonable and
intelligent. They just cant believe that tons of aluminum and steel will stay up in the sky.
Yet there are ways to overcome aerophobia. First, people need to face the fear and then take
steps to relieve it. Some of these steps are listed in this article. There are also many courses to
help all those executives, college students, and other reasonable people overcome their fear of
flying.
What can you do?

Do
deep-breathing

CAMDENS CLEANUP CREW

A run-down neighborhood gets a boost

DAVID FIELDS FOR TIME FOR KIDS

Team effort: The students work together to spruce up Miguels Place.

For the sixth-graders of the San Miguel

School in Camden, New Jersey, a precious
place is not a majestic mountain or a flowing
river. Its a gritty, litter- filled yard and a old,
boarded-up house. These city kids want to
save their community, and theyre starting on
their own school block!
Camden lies across the Delaware River
from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Industry once
made Camden a bustling city, but in areas
where factories have closed, abandoned
buildings and vacant lots are commonplace.
Unemployment is high, and the people are poor.

Were eight small kids in a very big world,

changing it one step at a time, admits Billy Joe
Marero, 12. The kids hope to turn the yard and
house into a community center called Miguels
Place.
Miguels Place will let the people in the
neighborhood feel safe. It will be a refuge from
crime, drugs and despair. I hope to make
Camden a better place, says Nijel Webb, 14. I
want to let people know that not all of Camden
is bad.

These kids have demonstrated that!

Anderer says that by working to clean up their
Drugs
and
pollution
make
our block, the kids learned a great lesson: From
neighborhood dirty and ugly, wrote the kids. If ruins, there can be signs of hope.
By Nelida Gonzalez Cutler
we save our place, it might be a sign of hope
for the neighborhood.
The students in Michael Anderers class
http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/heroes/
began small. They cleared the debris from a camden.html
yard next to their school. Then they painted
signs and planted seeds for a garden. They
