Lunenburg House

The Lunenburg House project studies focuses

on concepts of Situating, Dwelling, and Building.
What began as a small house, over the
course of the semester evolved into a 16unit, mixed-use,
residential commercial
building which helps to frame a new public
square on the waterfront of Lunenburg.

Sanders

Lunenburg House
The Residential units sit atop commercial ground
units. Each unit is designed to add density to
the area while at the same time allowing artisans
to sell their works in the lower commercial spaces.
The plans, sections, and facades all communicate
the program of the spaces. Of which, public
and private, served and servant, and prospect
and refuge all have a large level of importance.

The project, which sits on the banks of the
Thompson River in Kamloops, B.C., was
part of a building construction class. The
design was for a mixed use building that
was part of a four stage development.

Theatre - Music Chamber

The Theatre project fulfills two major programmatic
elements. First as an urban fabric piece that completes
Halifaxs Historical Grand Parade and second as
a theatre to service Halifaxs downtown core.
The urban site and context played a large part of the
development. Regulating lines and materiality were
derived from neighbours and influence the design.

Theatre - Music Chamber

The major program of the project is
the theatre.
The space is designed for
chamber music and drama performances.
Features
include
wood
cladding
throughout
with
glue-lam
structure
and a hydraulic lift for stage set up.

Sanders

Theatre - Music Chamber

The materiality of the building expresses the
function of the space.
Stereotomic concrete is
used for all service and theatre support areas, while
tectonic wood is used for all performance spaces.

New Gold Pavilion

This pavilion was designed for a closed competition,
for students, at New Gold Mine in Kamloops. The
program was for a visitors centre pavilion for the
re-opening of the mine (formerly Afton Mine).
The primary requirement was that the structure
fit in an existing triangular area.
The design
counters that geometry with a rounded form.

Structures Week
As a studio group we were tasked with designing a PopUp Theatre for a musical performer. Our studio began
with studying tensegrity models for the initial concept.
After which we used parametric modeling (Revit), to
generate construction drawings and a bill of materials.
The entire process was over the course of
a week with the completion marked by
a
performance
from
our
musical
guest.

Free Lab
As part of Dalhousies Annual Free Lab Project, our group
of students had the opportunity to design and construct
an information kiosk for the Urban Farm - Common Roots.
The objective was to design the kiosk with attention to
the factors of geometry, scale, and proportion. The
orientation, materiality, and form are all influenced
by existing conditions and other structures on site.

Sanders

16

Free Lab
The completed kiosk includes seating, integrated
information boards, and signage further towards
the street that directs pedestrian traffic onto the site.
The materiality is Red Maple Round Wood for
the primary structure, and dimensional lumber
for the secondary structure. The ground pavers
use the language and size of the existing planters
to carry the rhythm of the site into the kiosk.
