ABSTRACT
Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a flowing concrete mixture that is able
to consolidate under its own weight and maintain its homogeneity. The highly
fluid mixture of SCC makes it possible for placing in difficult conditions and in
the section with highly congested reinforcement. The full compaction and
strength is achieved without the assistance of external vibrations. Several other
researches are trying to replace cement with any other mineral admixtures like
flyash, silica fume, and lime sludge to obtain SCC either by partial or full
replacement of cement.
The aim of this thesis is to study the strength characteristic of SCC by
using various mix proportions of flyash i.e. from 0-60% replacement of binding
material by varying the dosage of super plasticizer, which is based on
polycaroxylate. In fresh concrete the flowing and filling ability without any
segregation are compared with different mix proportion T50cm slump test, Lbox test, and other major tests are carried.
The mix design is obtained for SCC by ACI method with Indian
standards as reference. The W/C is 0.5 as found from mix design. The strength
properties are compared with control specimen for both compressive and
flexure strength. The cube strength result indicates 45% to 60% replacement of
flyash shall be dropped since excessive flyash content tend to reduce the
strength of concrete. There is a reduction in strength characteristic gradually
beyond 35% flyash replaced concrete. 30% replacements have strength equal
strength to control concrete. From the flexural test conducted on beam, it shows
that up to 35% replacement of flyash with cement can be done without any vast
change in strength characteristic.
