Learning young
By Jessica Howard
Kids at the Ballan Community Childcare
Centre will
learn how to plant, grow and
care for their own trees.

The Rowsley Landcare Group and EcoRegeneration
Plant Nursery donated

150 seedlings to the childcare centre on
Friday (August 12).
Acting childcare director, Jess Moore
said the plan was to encourage

the children to take care of their

environment.
We have been embedding sustainability
into the curriculum since we celebrated
World Earth Day in March, she said.
Kids love getting their hands dirty and
this project will teach them how to water
and look after their own plants. We will
keep the seedlings here for a little bit
before the kids take them home to their
families. Once they are planted at home,

we will have further discussions to see

how it is all going.
Rowsley Landcare Group President,
Jacob Pearce said a variety of different
seedlings had been donated to the centre
in order to provide the children with a
choice.
Some of these kids live out on a
farm with their families and some
on a block with a couple of acres; the
Eco-Regeneration Plant Nursery has

provided a variety of seedlings so the

kids can choose which plant size would
best suit their property, he said.

We have also donated guards and

stakes so the kids can take them home
and plant the trees properly. We knew the
childcare was interested in being more
sustainable by encouraging the kids to
think more about the environment, and
this is a great way of doing that.

Darley Football Clubs Jarrod Edwards will

relinquish his position as coach at the end of the
2016 season.

This Weeks Specials

Edwards took over the role from Rod MacPherson

in 2014 after being a key player at the club since
2008 and guided the Devils to their first Ballarat
Football League premiership in 2015.
Darley Football President Grant Wright said
Jarrod had made the decision to stand down at
the start of the season for personal reasons.

The club cannot thank Jarrod and his coaching

team enough for what they have delivered within
our club over his three years as senior coach, he
said.

Guilty plea for

knife death

By Jessica Howard

A Darley man charged

in relation to the death of
30-year-old Gary Coulson
has appeared in the Supreme
Court of Victoria.

Daniel Nathan Parry, 37,

was accused of and pled
guilty to common law mur-

der on Wednesday August

10.

Parry was arrested in July

last year after the victim,
who was found with knife
wounds at his Myrtle Street
home in Werribee, died on
the way to hospital.
Parry had previously pled
guilty to statutory murder

under section 3A of the

Crimes Act (1958) - unintentional killing in the course or
furtherance of a crime of violence - however, Justice Beale
gave lean for this plea to be
withdrawn and the original
indictment was filed over.
In Victoria, the offence of
murder can be charged un-

der the common law or section 3A. Both offences carry

the same maximum penalty
of life imprisonment. In
contrast to statutory murder, common law murder
requires proof of intention to
kill or cause serious injury.
Parry will reappear in court
on Monday, September 12.

Calming devices to
slow speedsters

VOTE 1
local landcare

By Kate Taylor

By Kate Taylor
If enough locals log on and vote for the Moorabool
Catchment Landcare Group, it could win this years
national Peoples Choice Award.
One of eight finalists in the Landcare Community
Group category, the MCLG is additionally in the
running for the Peoples Choice Award - alongside all
69 national finalists.

The Peoples Choice Award is an opportunity for

Ballan, along with the rest of Moorabool, to show its
support for the Landcare hometown hero by voting
online at nationallandcareconference.org.au to ensure
the Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group takes the
big trophy home.
So please help us, and the other Victorian nominees
out, by voting! - And get all of your friends and family
to vote as well! said Group Co-ordinator Elle Fox.

The Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group has

developed new Landcare initiatives such as the
Moorabool Nectar Project that has planted nectar
producing plants, and nest boxes in urban and
peri-urban neighbourhoods that has encouraged
native species safely back into urban areas; these
projects earned the group regional recognition
when it received Moorabool Landcare Network and
Corangamite Catchment Management Community
Group awards.
Voting in the 2016 National Landcare Awards is open
until Wednesday 21 September, with the winner
being announced the next day.

Council will hurry up and wait

to look at installing speed bumps
in a Darley street.
A petition with the signatures
of 45 residents of Manning
Boulevard seeking traffic calming devices to slow speeding
cars was put before the August 3
council meeting.
The street currently has no devices to slow traffic, and the residents say it is a big issue.
Resident Barry Whelan spoke at
the meeting, having organised
the petition for the speed bumps.
Mr Whelan said the traffic
and hooning are problems for
families at night with young
children, the sick and elderly,
families with student children,
and others.
The speeding cars are an issue
for all the petitioners, for most
people its the incessant noise
late at night, he wrote in his letter to council.
For other people its the disturbance from being awoken from
sleep, especially on weekends
and often midweek, not just once
but frequently multiple times
and in a time frame between
9pm and 3am.
It is also a road and safety
issue, residents exiting their

driveways are at risk of collision

from speeding cars. Residents
walking on the road at night are
at risk, as they have to use the
roadway; there are no footpaths
in the lower half of Manning
Boulevard.
A council officer told the meeting that council relies on 85 per
cent of vehicles moving at a certain speed, adding that speed
limiting devices such as speed
bumps can deter hooning but
they dont solve the problem.
Cr. Paul Tatchell asked officers
what is the time frame on this
Mr Jeffrey?
General Manager of Infrastructure Phil Jeffrey said, it depends
on if the location is adequate. It
could come to next council meeting in September.
East Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik moved that the petition
be officially received, adding a
point that a report on the issue be
put to the next council meeting.
However, fellow East Ward
Councillor John Spain suggested
that instead the matter should
go before the next council meeting to be held in Bacchus Marsh,
with Cr Dudzik agreeing and
the motion being passed.
The next council meeting for
Bacchus Marsh is October of this
year.

Gold medal for actor

By Jessica Howard
Moorabools own Natalie Heywood
has taken her talents to the international stage and returned home with
three medals and two prestigious
performing arts scholarships.
The 20-year-old competed in the
World Championships of Performing Arts (WCoPA) in Long Beach,
California over nine days from July
8.
Natalie, who resides in Darley, took
out the gold medal in the Acting
Contemporary event and silver in

TV categories.
She also received a share in $380,000
worth of scholarships.
Both the New York Conservatory
for Dramatic Arts and the New York
Film Academy offered her academic
subsidies something Natalie is still
trying to come to terms with.
I still cant believe it, but I am really excited and really quite proud,
she said.
Ive been looking into the New
York Film Academy since I was little so its just so surreal. From here,
I will look into both the academies

and decide where I want to go. While

I was over there I had a look at one
of the campuses and it was really
beautiful.
Natalies interest in the performing
arts started in high school drama
class, where she attended Sacred
Heart in Tasmania before moving
to Bacchus Marsh. She continued
her love of drama both in school
and at the local Performing Arts
Headquarters.
The WCoPA was Natalies first time
performing on the international
stage and after returning home with
the taste of success, she cant wait to

move forward in her career.

These scholarships are a wonderful opportunity. Whether I go over to
New York or stay in Australia at the
New York Film Academy campus at
the Gold Coast, I think enrolling into
one of these schools will open a few
more doors, she said.
[The WCoPA] was such a great opportunity to meet with a really broad
range of people from all walks of life;
it was also really great exposure.
I met with a few agents in Los Angeles who seemed really interested,

The project is set to commence at

This involves a westerly extension

Mayor Allan Comrie has

defended user group fees being introduced to the shires
recreational reserves.
The new fees and charges
are the foundation for Councils commitments to the
volunteers and users which
include a plan for improvements and investment into
the reserves over the next
15 to 20 years and the implementation of a new simple
online booking system,
Mayor Comrie said.
He explained that the current level of fees and charges
paid by users is $27,221.
This will gradually increase to $33,744 over the
next three years with the reapportioning of fees (some
will increase and some will
decrease) across existing users to create a more equitable
and fairer model.
The Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve tenants pay $5,900 in
user fees, under a previous
state government agreement
established before Council
took over the management
of the Reserve, but which is
now being changed to individual leasing arrangements.
Mayor Comrie added the
user fees and charges paid
by the reserves are a small
contribution towards the
total invested by Moorabool
Shire Council into maintenance at each of the reserves
each year.
The amount to be paid by
each of the reserves will be
calculated based on a range
of factors which include the
standard of the reserve and
facilities, usage demands
and requirements and initiatives to encourage participation and passive recreation.

Whats good
for the goose

By Jessica Howard
Ballans
most
utilised
kitchen has received a muchneeded boost thanks to the
local hospitals biggest annual fundraising event.
Love is in the Air raised
more than $22,000 in order
to fund the refurbishment
of the Ballan District Health
and Care kitchen, which
prepares more than 2,000
meals per week.
Held on Friday July 22 at the
Ballan Mechanics Hall, the
fundraiser coincided with
BDH&Cs 50th birthday.
A five course meal was provided by The Plough Myrniong pop-up shop alongside
entertainment by local band
Little Wigtown.
A number of raffle prizes
and auction items were
generously donated by the
community, including a dinner for eight to be prepared
by BDH&C chief executive
Wayne Weaire. The rare item
proved to be the most sought
after, with Mr Weaires cooking skills purchased at a total of $1175.
Mr Weaire was tight lipped
on the dinner menu, however said the lucky winners
had chosen a 1920s theme.

Its a secret! Weve worked

the menu around their chosen theme, but theyll just
have to wait and see. People
will need to bid at auction
for it again next year to find
out what its all about, he
said.
Other generous items included a cricket bat signed
by Merv Hughes and donated by Tim and Helen Dowdell, a free garden consultation from Jane Dennithome
and a $500 cocktail party
voucher to The Ploughs new
Stables.
Mr Weaire said he was
thrilled to have been a part
of such a superb evening.
It was just the most amazing celebration of the communitys achievements over
the last 50 years in building,
opening and developing one
of the best health services in
Victoria, he said.
Each year the community
gives so generously and we
are so grateful to now be able
to update the kitchen, which
each day supplies food to
the aged care facility, hospital, children at the childcare
centre and out into the ever
growing community. The
refurbishment of the kitchen
will provide the best work

environment for our staff

and the best food for the
community.

BDH&C continued the celebrations the following day,

with an afternoon High Tea
showcasing the history of
the hospital and welcoming special guest Dr Robert
Webster.
Dr Webster is Senior Vice
President of the RSL (Victorian Brach) and a former
board member of Austin
Health. He was a National
Serviceman for two years,
which included a tour of
Vietnam between 1970 and
1971.

Dr Webster spoke of the

hospitals beginnings, included the importance of
Mr Norman Rhodes, whose
death in action in New Guinea sparked the campaign for
a memorial hospital in Ballan back in 1943.

Normans mother Jane Rhodes and sister Jean Ryland

spent years advocating and
planning for the hospital,
which finally opened its
doors 22 years later in July
1966. The first patient was
admitted three days prior to
the official opening.

But he said that Codes of

Conduct are like good manners you cant legislate
them.
People either have them,
respect them, or they dont.
He pointed out that heavyhanded tactics in forcing
councillors to sign the code
will not mean that all councillors stick to it adding
there are already measures
in place to deal with misbehaving councillors.
Its basically gun-to-thehead stuff, isnt it? Thats
what I object to.
And its disdainful to local
government to have the state
government say we know
best, we know whats right,
you will think what we tell
you to think thats not democracy, and thats not good
government.
All of Moorabool Shires
councillors have signed the

code but that was not the

case in neighbouring City of
Ballarat.
Councillors across the state
were given one month to
sign the code however none
of the Ballarat councillors
signed the code, and all may
be stood down as of the start
of September as a result.
East Ward Councillor Dave
Edwards also objected to
having to sign the document, however also decided
to do so.
Its worth noting that all
these new requirements
- such as mandating councillors signing of the Code
of Conduct, and new candidates proving their education history; whilst okay in
principle, its a shame the
state government doesnt require their representatives to
do the same thing.

Fire victims
still suffering
By Kate Taylor
The recovery from last
years bushfire at Scotsburn
may have suffered a setback,
with concerns that Grocon
has pulled out of the cleanup effort.
Moorabool Shire Council
Mayor Allan Comrie raised
the issue at the August
3 council meeting, amid
reports that fire-affected
residents still have piles of
rubbish that have not been
removed.
Grocon was commissioned
by the state government to
clean up after the fire.
Mayor Comrie met with
CEO Rob Croxford and
Emergency Services Minister James Merlino last month
to discuss a range of matters which included an update on the recovery efforts.
As part of that discussion I asked the Minister
about the Grocon clean-up
in Scotsburn, as some of the
residents affected by the fire
have raised questions about
the extent of the clean-up
and other support, Mayor
Comrie said.

The Moorabool Shire was hit with wild fire over the
weekend that blazed through more than 4600 hectares of
land, destroying 12 homes and 30 sheds.
Residents from Scotsburn, Elaine, Mount Doran, Clarendon,
and Durham Lead were forced to flee their homes as Victorian
firefighters battled the blaze in extreme weather conditions.
The CFA have confirmed 12 houses in total were destroyed;
Scotsburn (six), Clarendon (three), Durham Lead (two) and
Elaine (one), with another four damaged to the point of being
uninhabitable.
A total of 1030 sheep and five horses died at Narmbool
the 2000-hectare property located at Elaine and owned and
operated by Sovereign Hill.
A CFA spokesperson said they were unable to confirm what
ignited the fire, however it was believed to have started on
private land.
The fast-moving blaze began on Finns Road in Scotsburn on
Saturday afternoon.
At 10pm that evening, more than 150 fearful residents
gathered in the Buninyong Town Hall for a community
meeting.
Buninyong police officer, Peter Anderson said a good
turnout showed how strong the community was.
We are going to need that strength over the next couple of
days, he said.
A Relief Centre in Ballan was established by the Moorabool
Shire Council on Saturday evening, before a second Relief
Centre was opened at Buninyong the following morning.
Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford said the
decision to set up the relief centres came at the request of the
Incident Control Centre.
In hindsight it may have been prudent to have Buninyong
up earlier, but to resource two centres late Saturday night
would have been impossible. Ballan was out of harms way,
he said.
The City of Ballarat offered assistance and have been a
significant contributor from Sunday on. We will put out
requests to other neighbouring shires and to the State
Government for support in coming days.
With 523 firefighters, 69 tankers and three bulldozers
deployed over two days, the blaze was brought under control
by 8pm on Sunday after a welcome cool change arrived, with
crews continuing to patrol the area through the evening.
Golden Plains Shire Council failed to respond to questions
regarding their involvement and assistance with the fires,
emergency service crews and the efforts to engage with the
Moorabool Shire council.

Signing a new Code of

Conduct wasnt so much a
choice, as having a bunch
of thugs put a gun to councillors heads until they put
pen to paper.
Speaking about having
signed the new code, West
Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan said he had signed it
but reluctantly, and only
because the alternate option
was to be fired by the state
government.
The government was going to come in like a bunch
of thugs and kick you out of
council if you didnt sign
and I thought why should
I put the ratepayers to the
expense of a by-election, Cr
Sullivan said of his decision
to ultimately sign the code.
You have to sign this,
otherwise you lose your
job - no discussion, no rational debate about it; thats
totally disrespectful to local
government.
Cr Sullivan pointed out that
he is not opposed to having
good processes and order
he has, during his time as a
councillor, developed a reputation as a guardian of due
process and diligence.

Vale Joe Donegan

28/11/1924 18/7/2016

By Jane Gardner
The communities of Gordon
and surrounding districts
are mourning the loss of
much-loved old-timer, Joe
Donegan. Joe died following
a stroke, in Ballarats Gandarra on Monday 18 July,
aged 92.
A funeral service was held
at St Patricks church in
Gordon on Friday 22 July
followed by a huge wake in
the Spud Shed at Donegans
Farm (the popular tourist
venue established by Joes
son Peter and daughter-inlaw, Josie).
During the funeral service,
family members told how
Joe had helped to write his
own eulogy. If you leave
the job to others, you never
know what they might say
about you! hed said.
Joe was born on the 28 November 1924 at the family
farm in Gordon where the
original pioneer home still
stands. The farm, which has
been in Joes family for close
to 160 years, was his passion.
In his early years, Joe attended St Patricks Primary
School Gordon, being one of
the first students when the
school opened in the early
1930s. In 1939, Joe began the
first of many happy years
at St Patricks College in
Ballarat.
While at school, Joe developed a great love of sport,
and in 1941 made the school
football team, playing centre-half back. On turning 18,
Joe signed up for Military
Service, but when he was
called up in 1943, he was told
he was needed for the war
effort at home on the farm.
Joe met his wife Mary at a
Debutante Ball in Wallace.
The couple were engaged
in 1950 and married a year
later. A family joke tells that
Joe and Mary spent their

honeymoon overseas at
Philip Island.
Joe and Mary went on to
have 11 children, 24 grandchildren and (at the time
of his funeral) 3 great
grandchildren!
At the service, Joes grandson Sam Donegan told
of the many lessons his
grandfather had taught him.
Amongst them, Lesson 4:
The good footballers get
all the girls! and Lesson 5:
Love your family. Everyone who knew Joe will testify that he did indeed love
his family.
Alongside Joes great passion for his family, farming,
nature and animals, was his
strong faith in God. At age
80, when Joe was diagnosed
with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, he credits his faith to
surviving years beyond the
few months his doctors
suggested he had left.

Joe went on to author several works about the history of his beloved district,
including Pa Joe and In
Gods Hands. (The latter being the phrase used by his
doctors following his cancer
prognosis.)
Joe was also instrumental
in documenting the history
of the Gordon Cemetery,
painstakingly
recording
hundreds of old graves and
acknowledging those of
WWI and WWII veterans,
both men and women. Its
perhaps fitting that he now
rests in a place he knew so
well.

Young Victorians often feel

pressured by their friends to
drink, according to new survey results from VicHealth.
The survey also showed
that a majority of Victorians
dont want to live in a society
where its seen as acceptable
to set out to get drunk.
VicHealth CEO, Jerril Rechter said 40 per cent of more
than 1,800 18-to-24-year-olds
felt obliged to drink alcohol
when people around them
were drinking.
This is an example of social
acceptability that needs to
change, he said.
Peer pressure among
young people is rife The
survey also found that more
than two thirds of 2,000
adult Victorian drinkers
agreed its not okay to drink
to get drunk. Victorians are
telling us that they dont

want a society that says

thats acceptable behaviour.
VicHealth have since called
on local councils to help
tackle risky drinking by
applying for a grant under
its new $1.3 million Alcohol Culture Change Grants
Initiative.
The initiative will allocate
funding to councils to work
with researchers, community partners and others to
develop ideas and deliver
projects that target groups of
risky drinkers in their local
area.
Victorian Minister for Mental Health, Martin Foley
welcomed the new initiative,
saying all Victorians must
help to change cultures of
risky drinking.
We recognise our alcohol
culture has become detrimental for too many Victorians, he said.
VicHealth define Alcohol

Culture as the way people

drink, including formal
rules, social norms, attitudes, and beliefs around
what is and what is not socially acceptable for a group
of people before, during and
after drinking.
Mr Rechter said reducing
the social acceptability of
risky drinking was key to
changing the drinking culture in Australia.
VicHealth is working to reduce the impact alcohol has
on the health and wellbeing
of Victorians. Our 10-year
goal is to see 200,000 more
Victorians drinking less alcohol by 2023.
VicHealth released its new
Alcohol Strategy on Tuesday
(August 9), which outlines its
plan to prevent harm from
alcohol over the next three
years. For More information,

Is parking a problem in Bacchus Marsh?

In passing, Joe has left behind a wonderful legacy,

not just in the form of his
big, loving family, but in
documenting his 92 years of
memories for future generations to share. Joe is indeed
now, in Gods hands.

Yes, its not enough.

- Nick (Bacchus Marsh)

There is never enough parking.

- Kevin (Bacchus Marsh)

The time is not long enough, it goes too

quickly. We park at one end and walk where
we need to.
- Liz (Bacchus Marsh)

Mostly. Its only one hour parking in the

Water main source for Avenue farmers

By Jessica Howard
Popular Bacchus Marsh agri-businesses can continue to
grow after the replacement
of an ageing water main at
the Avenue of Honour.
Minister for Water, Lisa
Neville marked the official
commissioning of the new
water main on Thursday
(July 28).
Western Water worked
closely with the Bacchus
Marsh RSL, Heritage Victoria,
Moorabool
Shire
Councils arborist, and local businesses to ensure the
Avenues trees were protected and preserved during
construction.
Ms Neville said having a
reliable, secure water supply
would give businesses in the
Avenue of Honour the confidence to grow and create
new employment opportunities for the region.
This project is a great example of a water corporation working in partnership
with local communities to

achieve great results, she

said.
The Avenue of Honour is
home to some of Moorabools best-known agriculture businesses, and is the
centre of the annual Strawberries and Cherries Festival, which attracts around
15,000 people to the region
to pick fruit.
The new water main has a
secure, higher capacity water supply that will benefit
the local economy.
Trenchless technology was
used during the project, and
tree root zones were established to minimise impacts
on the environment. The majority of the 281 trees planted
in 1918 in remembrance of
those from the region who
served in WWI still remain
after close to a century.
Member for Melton Don
Nardella said it was great
to see so much work being
done in order to preserve
one of Victorias cultural and
historic treasures.

equals scientists
By Jessica Howard
Emerging female scientists,
engineers and mathematicians gathered in Bacchus
Marsh last month to take
part in an unusual form of
speed dating.
Ecolinc Bacchus Marsh was
host to its inaugural Science,
Technology,
Engineering
and Mathematics (STEM) for
Women Program on Friday
July 26. The program welcomed 90 Year 9 and 10 students from various schools
throughout Victoria.
A STEM Careers speed dating session allowed partici-

pants to meet, talk with, and

learn from a range of women
in the STEM fields, as well as
a range of higher education
providers.
Speed-dating special guests
included BioMelbourne Network CEO, Krystal Evans,
La Trobe University Researcher, Denise Fernando,
Environment Education Victoria Executive Officer, Julie
Harris, and representatives
from Deakin, Federation
and Melbourne Universities.
Eager students also took
part in three hands-on
workshops and two keynote
presentations.

Ecolinc Director, Linda

Flynn said she was exceptionally pleased with the
success of the event and
the feedback received from
participants, teachers, and
women scientists.
Overall feedback showed
that the students found the
program helpful, inspirational and very interesting.
Ms Flynn said the next Ecolinc Emerging STEM for
Women Program was to be
held on Wednesday October
5.
I am excited to announce
that the keynote speaker

council meeting after a long list of
objections and amendments.
Former councillor Pat Griffin spoke at
the meeting, objecting to a paragraph
relating to project management, saying
it should be amended or deleted.

However, Central Ward Councillor

Paul Tatchell argued that Project

Managers serve a purpose, adding

it would be a risk not to have them
included and it will protect the
ratepayer in regard to risk.
Woodlands Ward Councillor
Toohey also raised concerns.

The audience will once
again be Year 9 and 10 girls
and the day will include
guest speakers, a range of
hands-on workshops, and
a career session. Whilst
the July event was specific

Tom Sullivan voted in favour of the
motion.

Councillors Pat Toohey and Paul

Building a bridge
to get over

by Kate Taylor
Construction works have
started on Bacchus Marshs
newest bridge across the
Werribee River.
The current works will deliver a twin span bridge that
will connect with the 1.2km
Halletts Way/OLeary Way
extension and will help to
ease traffic congestion for
residents.
The bridge works underway
include driving 49 piles to a
depth of 30 metres below the
ground.
Moorabool Shire Council
Mayor Allan Comrie said
that the project is one of the
largest infrastructure undertakings in the shires history.

The completion of this project will deliver a seamless

connection running from
Griffith Street in Maddingley through to Links Road in
Darley, Mayor Comrie said.
The current $10m total project commenced in March
2016 and is expected to be
completed by end of March
2017.
The next stage of the Western Link Road Project will
deliver eastern ramps for
Halletts Way from the Western Freeway and a shared
pedestrian crossing over the
Freeway; this $12.8 million
stage of the project is expected to commence in early
2017.

Some bus stops in Bacchus Marsh are in

for an overhaul.
An upgrade is being proposed, and construction likely to begin soon, on the Bennett Street bus stops.
This is the main interchange point for
the bus service in Bacchus Marsh, said a
council spokesperson.
Public Transport Victoria is proposing
an upgrade to the stops on both sides
of the road that includes shelter installations. PTV has advised that this location is being treated as a high priority
and that construction could commence
in August/September this year. Final
confirmation of funding and timelines is
required.
Council has also been liaising with PTV
in relation to a potential grant for the installation of shelters at other sites across
Bacchus Marsh.
An Expression of Interest for the funding has been submitted and it is anticipated that the outcome will be known
in the coming months. If successful, the
funding could provide for the installation of up to 12 shelters across Bacchus
Marsh and higher usage stops would be
prioritised accordingly.

Dear Editor,
The Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) once
again draws readers attention to the persistent problem of roadside litter in this
shire. MEG has previously
used your columns to advocate a container deposit
scheme (CDS) that would
discourage people from
discarding drink containers
and get them returned for
recycling. However, Minister Neville has routinely
brushed off calls for a CDS
on the improbable ground
that Victoria is less littered
than other states. Less littered? Come and have a look
Minister, and see the problem first-hand in regional
areas. Our interstate neigh-

bours may be ankle-deep in

cans and bottles, but now at
least they are doing something about it.
Ms Nevilles other defence
has been that a CDS would
make kerbside recycling less
viable. That no longer holds
water either, because while
the Minister has stalled on
this issue, the other Eastern
states have accepted the
need for a container deposit
scheme as the most attractive
solution. South Australia
has had a successful CDS in
place for decades, and both
NSW and Queensland have
now moved to introduce
similar schemes by 2018.
Even Coca-Cola Amatil has
reportedly assented to the
NSW proposals, describing

WHATS ON

them as low cost, efficient

and effective. Community
groups stand to benefit financially to the tune of tens
of millions of dollars.

Surely we are only a hop

and a step from a nationwide scheme. A Victorian
CDS is said to have the support of Mayor Comrie and
several other councils in this
region, as well as ex-premier
Napthine. Let us not drag
our feet on this any longer.
Victoria didnt take a lead
we should at least keep up
with the peleton.

Perspective

with Paul Tatchell

Cant a Ford to make them

TOM

I bought the workshop a

new ute a couple of weeks
ago; the last Falcon I will ever
own; in fact the last Australian built car that I will ever
own. Nothing against Australian built motor cars, but
we simply dont make them
anymore!
I think I have owned every
Falcon ute model thats
been produced, and I dont
remember a time when I
havent owned a Falcon ute,
with the exception of my first
ute, an Austin A40; reliable
enough, but wouldnt pull
the skin off a rice pudding.
I have nothing against
Holdens; in fact there has
been a red lion parked
next to the Falcon on a number of occasions; I just prefer
the taxi version of the long
boot, than the B&S version
from GMH; its a workhorse
and thats how I treat them.
I would never buy a ute off
myself; you can guarantee
any blue oval that has been
used in my workshop has
its best years behind it and
nothing to look forward too!

They get washed once a

year whether they need it
or not, they have had more
drivers in them than a Turkish Taxi, and they are almost
always loaded within a Bees
privates off the manufacturers specifications.
The great thing about ordering a Falcon ute is I dont
need to test drive it, I dont
care what colour it is, and I
dont need the obligatory induction from the car dealer
on the finer points of operating the vehicles controls;
steering wheel, gear shift,
and a set of keys. I not only
dont know what all the other buttons and switches do
and I simply dont care!
I have a simple philosophy
on when to order a new ute:
when paying the registration
on the old one is over capitalising the vehicle. There
has been one exception to
the rule: years ago my wife
borrowed one of our retired
utes for her business and the
bloody thing is still going!
Its had more hits than Elvis;
the paint, or whats left of it,

has faded to a whole new colour, it has more things that

dont work than it has that
do, and it has more rattles
than a millionaires baby; Its
the Eveready bunny of Falcon utes.

The newest edition to the

demolition derby of workshop abuse has more bells
and whistles than Pee Wee
Hermans pushbike, and
enough power to tow start
one of the Kenworths; to me
its just a Falcon ute with way
too much lipstick!

When the dealer asked me if

I wanted a reversing camera
fitted to the flat screen television in the dashboard I told
him the technology would
be wasted on our drivers;
when they drive the workshop ute, they all drive by
ear!
The amazing thing is
they can thread a b-double
through the eye of a needle,
but put them in a workshop
ute; well, thats another
story!
Ford

Australia

stopped

production of the iconic ute

a few months ago; the end
of an era that started in 1934
when the first purpose built
Ford ute left the production
line.
A letter from a famers wife
from Gippsland in 1933
prompted Ford to build the
dual purpose vehicle when
she wrote to Ford Why
dont you build, for people
like us, a vehicle that can go
to church on Sunday, and
carry the pigs to market on
Monday.

A chap named Lew Brandt

was given the task and the
first purpose built Ford ute
rolled off the production line
in 1934. Lew lived over near
Meredith and spent 46 years
with the Ford motor Company after starting there as a
14 year old.
Sadly Lew was killed over
in Bannockburn in 1987
driving his beloved 1934 ute
that he designed, when he
was hit by a truck.
The concept of having a
vehicle that drives like a car

Environmental Opinion

yet works like an Italian concreter had served the practical populous for 82 years.
Id say that all good things
must come to an end, but
in the case of the trusty Falcon ute, it was simply about
economics.
There are too many reasons
to mention why the car Industry hasnt survived in
this country; the same reasons why other countries
have stopped producing
cars; production costs in a
small market for right-handdrive vehicles is only part of
the problem.
Successive Governments
have thrown billions of dollars propping up the car
Industry and failed. There
was never an incentive for
the buyer to buy Australian
and with 68 different brands
of motor vehicles shipped in
every day they just couldnt
compete.
There was nothing wrong
with the Australian built
car; it was just too expensive
to build. Trying to compete
with the dollar a day and all

the rice they can eat labour

costs of our Asian neighbours was never a sound
proposition.

Its also fair to suggest that

our taxpayer funding was
spent on the assembly line,
instead of imported technical innovation; the Australian brand was about the sheet
metal, not the components.
When you consider that my
latest Falcon ute with all of
its technology and luxury
appointments cost $1000
less than the no frills model
I bought 16 years ago, I feel
like I stole it!
The practical simplicity of
the Falcon ute has evolved
into a luxury car with a
tray; it drives like a quality
import, it carries more, and
bullet proof with its tried
and tested drive train; its a
bloody good motor car being
cut down in its prime.

Its sad to see the demise of

the working mans coupe,
and I give my final salute to
the great Australian ute!

with Tom Kingston

What is behind the demise of the CSIRO?

We all know about the cuts

to the CSIRO. I had thought
they had happened because
the current federal government felt threatened by
all the talk about climate
change and thought that a
reduction in the number of
scientists working in this
area would somehow make
some talk go away. While
this is quite obvious, what
if there is something more
sinister at play by our government? What if the cuts
were specifically targeted
and not only that but the
consequences of this targeting would have serious subsequent health ramifications
for Australians?
According to Mick Daley,
a Sydney based freelance
journalist, in an article entitled, Uneducated gas
(Saturday Paper, August 6,

p8) the CSIRO has had 1300

job cuts in two years, 150 of
them from climate research.
(The new Science Minister
Greg Hunt has recently announced 15 new climate science jobs what can I say?).
Daley, in this article, makes
a very interesting case that
the losses from climate research were not by accident
and indeed might have been
targeted. Some of the cuts to
the CSIRO have been in the
research areas that apply to
emissions from such things
as unconventional gas mining or, as it is sometimes
called, coal seam gas (CSG)
extraction. While we here in
Victoria and Tasmania have
a moratorium (for the time
being I hasten to add) on CSG
extraction, in Queensland
and New South Wales it is
very big business and covers

vast areas of the two states.

Dr Michael Borgas, formerly
a principal research scientist
at the CSIRO, is quoted by
Daley as saying in relation to
the cuts to the CSIRO, Were
losing some of that capacity
to be able to do proper measurements and monitoring of
CSG emissions. Dr Borgas
goes on, they wanted to
remove capabilities related
to air quality and the exposure of humans to toxic
chemicals.
In a related case Professor
Isaac Santos, a researcher at
the National Science Centre in Coffs Harbour and a
world expert on greenhouse
gases has received grants
to carry out many research
activities yet when he applies for a grant to study
CSG he has hit a brick wall.
I applied for nine research

grants in 2013, he says. I

got five. The four I failed are
CSG related.
In one day of driving a car
to obtain methane readings
in coal seam gas fields Professor Santos came up with
more data than has been
made available by the authorities in over 10 years.
And, wait for it, it only
gets worse. Daley writes
in Uneducated gas, A former advisor of New South
Wales Premier Mike Baird
is the current CEO of the
NSW Minerals Council,
and Bairds draconian protest laws were promised to
the mining industry at a
pre-election dinner in 2014.
The sleeper issue is the geology in the CSG areas writes
Melbourne Universitys Professor Peter Rayner. He goes
on to say in Daleys article,

There might be evidence

to be concerned about
whether the geologyis
conducting methane to the
surface.
And who owns these CSG
companies? Is it Australian companies? I have
mentioned the US Company
Halliburton before. They
have huge interests in CSG
extraction in Queensland
and NSW. They are also the
company that is reported to
have made $39.5 billion on
the Iraq War. Who is listening to this company in our
federal government and ensuring the CSIRO does not
look too closely at their environmental practices? Daley
also points out that even in
the US the laws around CSG
are much more stringent
than here in Australia. Why
is this the case?

I am reminded of Premise
Five from Derrick Jensen in
(Endgame: Volume II: Resistance, Seven Story Press, New
York, 2006): The property
of those higher on the hierarchy is more valuable than
the lives of those below. It is
acceptable for those above
to increase the amount of
property they control in
everyday language, to make
money by destroying or
taking the lives of those below. This is called production. If those below damage
the property of those above,
those above may kill or otherwise destroy the lives of
those below. This is called
justice.
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting: 7.30pm
Thursday August 25, Lerderderg Library, Bacchus
Marsh. All Welcome.

from friends and the Ballan and surrounding community.

Last weekend the G B Forestry Cobras travelled up the highway to

play Ballarat.
In the football the seniors were playing a crucial game, the Cobras
were looking at locking in a top 2 spot on the ladder and the Swans
were still in the hunt for 6th position and a finals berth. This game last
year the Swans knocked us out of contention for a finals birth and
this was a bit of a catalyst used by Travis in his pre-match speech as
it was up to the players whether they were going to let a top 2 spot
slip through their fingers. From the first bounce the boys were on the
charge and it was displayed early that this game result was going
home with us. By time we held a 36 point lead and the mood
in the rooms was that this was not enough and that we needed to
run this game out, at time the lead had extended to 54 points
thanks to a massive quarter by Lachie Phyland who presented so
well in the forward line and when the final siren sounded to end the
game, the boys celebrated with a 94 point victory. This game result
was lead strongly by our inspirational captain in Tyson Shea; other
players to mention are Trent Angwin, who played a massive game at
fullback, Daniel Burton who again gave everything in the ruck, Matt
Denham who worked hard through the midfield, Rhys McNay who
just presented all day and run his opponents into the ground and the
very special and unique Jarrah Maksymow showed what he can do
on the field. The G B Forestry Cobras have now secured a top 2
finish. Ensure you DONT miss next weeks match against Lake
Wendouree as the winner will finish on top of the ladder before we
play each other again in the first week of the finals.
In the reserves, the game meant so much to the players as Ben
Hicks, who is loved around the club, was playing his 100th game and
the boys were not going to let this slip. It was a bit of a close 1st half
but in the second half the boys ran away with the victory by 53 points
and then chaired Ben off the ground. The boys have now locked in
4th spot on the ladder. Best on the day were B. Hicks, T. Hughes, R.
Shortis, D. Walker, T. Wardell, P. Hoyland.
The U18s game was practically over by time, though they were
only leading by 28 points, it was the difference in game intensity that
put this game beyond doubt. The second half was a bit closer as the
Swans came out a bit harder however it was not enough and by the
final siren our boys held onto a 21 point victory. A victory next week
will secure 3rd spot for the finals. Best on the day were D. Bishop, J.
Johns, L. Pigott, J. Calvitto, J. Lalor.
In Netball, the girls were all unfortunate in their results.
The A graders lost their game by 55 goals, best players not supplied.
The B graders lost their game by 15 goals; best on the day were
L. Prout, S. Govan & B. Walsh.
The C graders unfortunately lost their game by 8 goals but still have
a chance to play finals if they can knock off the ladder leaders next
week; best on the day were G. Pino, M. Hawken & V. Scicchitano.
The D graders were also unfortunately beaten on the day by 17
1-9 Bennett

goals; best on the day were A. McClure,
A. Reynolds
K. Buttigieg.
The 19 and Unders also lost their game byPhone:
30 goals;

on the day

Hurricane at Hepburn
The Senior squad were
blown way in the first quarter by a ruthless Burras line
up that were out to prove a
point before the finals. In the
first quarter the
Blues were held goalless
whilst
their
opponents
booted eight big ones, and it
looked disastrous.
But as the game progressed
the Blues were able to gain
some clear air and had some
opportunities up forward.
Justin McConnell ended the
day with four goals, which
was outstanding given the
tempo of the game.
The backline squad did a
great job given the continuous traffic their way and
none better than Ben Fenwick and Jake Wilkinson.
Jason McNamara was also
a stand-out as ever in the
middle and could hold his
head high. From being with-

in a kick of Buninyong who

ended the season on top of
the ladder, to this defeat by
Hepburn, it points to some
interesting finals results.
Final Scores : Ballan 611
47 lost Hepburn 23 11149
Best - D. Tanti, B. Fenwick,
J. McNamara, J. Wilkinson, J.
Wilkie, B.Shaw.
The Reserves did not have
the same onslaught as the
Seniors in the first quarter
and could certainly hold
their head high, given the
troops they had available.
Our old war horse Jason
Bongart was at his best and
shows no signs of exiting
the game. Brad Dale had
another great game booting three goals against stiff
competition and Rod Watts
booted a couple. Other noteworthy performances were
from Justin Fenwick and
Juddy in the backline. The
crew whilst undermanned
have certainly put in some
respectable
performances
throughout the year.
Final Scores: Ballan 6 2

Best - J. Bongart, L. Dickson,

J. Fenwick.
The Under 18s were with
their opponents until half
time but then Hepburn
drew away and the Blues
had a real battle to score up
forward. Jeda Stone was not
intimidated by the Burras
pressure and tried hard all
day up forward and Kyle
Katic on the wing did hold
his ground. Harry Webb did
give a good account in the
middle but the Blues were
given a healthy wake up
call before the first final next
week.
Final Scores : Ballan2 5
17lost Hepburn 6 10 64
Best - C. Brown, K. Katic, J.
Stone, J. Byrnes, H. Webb, A.
Pascoe.
The Under 15s took on the
league leaders and were
shown in no uncertain terms
how high the bar is. On their
home turf Hepburn were
absolutely ruthless and gave
the Blues no headway and
their defence was impenetrable. Sam Dehnert battled
tirelessly in the middle as
did Corey Pascoe but the
Blues were simply outclassed by a very tight team
on their home ground. The
Blues will now regroup for
the finals and make amends
there.
Final Scores : Ballan0 0 0
lost Hepburn 17 18 120
Best - S. Dehnert, J.
Monaghan, C. Pascoe, D.
Marruso, B. Neumann.
The early starters Under
12s were yet again the bright
spot of the day, fresh from
their Lightning premiership
campaign and they had a
day out. Cody Gates had a
great day forward booting
three goals but he had plenty
of helpers in the middle and
it was a great win to finish
off an impressive year.
Final Scores : Ballan 5 5 35
def Hepburn 1 1 7
Best - D. Allan, M. Calleja,
N. Neumann, A. Eskdale, M.

The 2016 Cross Country season came to an end on Saturday

when the Centre final home run was held at Masons Lane. The
theme of the day was Footy as all athletes dressed in their
favourite footy gear. All races were conducted on a handicap

times that were calculated from season results. This gave a
chance for athletes to run down the front runners. Zane Rich
was the only backmarker to record line honours.
Line honours for the day were awarded as follows:
