LINKING BODY SYSTEM

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development

To the Learner
The human body is composed of various systems that work in an
orderly manner. These different systems enable the person to grow.
Three of these systems are linked to the circulatory system namely the
digestive, respiratory, and urinary systems.

Lets Learn This

How the digestive, respiratory and urinary systems are linked to

the circulatory system.

Lets Try This

A. Match the body system with its function by connecting a line.

Digestive System

Urinary System

The body system responsible

for carrying out the breathing
process.
The body system responsible
for distributing food nutrients
and oxygen to the body cells
and removing wastes from
them.

Respiratory System

The body system responsible

for the breaking down of food.

Circulatory System

The body system responsible

for removing wastes especially
wine from the body.
44

B. Which is the main part of each body system that can be linked to
the circulatory system? Write the correct answer in your paper.
1. Digestive: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large
intestine
2. Respiratory: nose pharynx, larynx, tranchea, bronchial tubes,
lungs
3. Urinary: kidneys, ureter, gall bladder, urethra

Lets Study This

Using these flow charts you will learn how digestive, respiratory
and urinary systems are linked to the circulatory system.
C

Blood is pumped from the right ventricle to the lungs.

Lungs absorb oxygen during inhalation and releases

carbon dioxide during exhalation.

The oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium into the

left ventricle.

The left ventricle pumps blood to the body.

The blood absorbs food nutrients when it circulates

through the small intestine.

Wastes from the cells are removed from the blood when it
circulates through the kidney.

Blood enters the kidney through the renal artery and

leaves through the renal veins.

45

After the blood passes through the entire body delivering

food nutrients and oxygen and removing waste, the blood
returns to the heart.

The deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium, which

returns it to the right ventricle.

The blood is then pumped to the lungs to receive more

oxygen and make another trip.

and carbon dioxide comes out of the body.

Lets Do More
By answering the following questions, complete the diagram
below.
What are the three body systems that linked to the
circulatory system?
How they linked to circulatory system?
CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM

47

Lets Remember This

Digestive, respiratory and urinary systems are linked to

the circulatory system. As the blood is pumped to the lungs,
oxygen is absorbed into the body during inhalation and
carbon dioxide is released from the body during exhalation.
(Respiratory) As the blood enters the small intestines food
nutrients are absorbed. (Digestive) As the blood circulates
through the kidneys, wastes from the cells are removed.
(Urinary)

Lets Test Ourselves

Explain how the following body systems are linked to the
circulatory system.

1. Digestive system

2. Respiratory system

3. Urinary system

48

Science Fact File

It is usually done to determine whether the blood of one person

can be transfused into the body of a patient without serious reaction.
The most serious transfusion reaction is the rapid destruction of the
transferred red blood cells. This may lead to shock, kidney failure, and
sometimes death. Other reactions may include fever, shaking, and
chills.

1. Digestive system a system that helps in the breaking down
of food
2. Respiratory system is made up of body parts that help you
breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide
3. Urinary system a system of excretory organs that get rids of
blood wastes, excess water and excess salt
