Glacier Park Icon

While touring Glacier National Park, Allyson

Riden captured this fantastic scene of a Rocky
Mountain Goat. Looking more like a painting,
she took this stunning photo with her cell
phone and sent it to her Dad Wade while he
was eating lunch at the Oasis!

About the Rocky Mountain Goat

Dwelling in the rocky cliffs at high

elevations throughout the year, the mountain
goat, also known as the Rocky Mountain goat,
is well suited for survival in the mountains.
One of Glacier National Parks iconic
species, the mountain goat is only found in
the northern latitudes of North America, and
is more closely related to serows and chamois
from Eurasia than to domestic goats.
Today, some mountain goat populations
found in the United States have been
introduced, but those found in Glacier are
native to the landscape.

With two layers of wool, a dense undercoat
covered by an outer layer of long hollow hairs,
the species can survive temperatures as low as
minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 100
mph.
Specialized cloven hooves (a hoof split
into two toes which spread out when needed)
with traction-creating inner pads and
dewclaws provide sure footing on steep, rocky
slopes, and they are often found traversing
nearly vertical cliff edges beyond the reach
of most predators. They are exceptional

$57,000 and still rolling in

It was another bang-up job for the Northeast Montana
Relay For Life this past Saturday night at the Northeast
Montana Fairgrounds in Glasgow.
According to Tim Phillips on KLTZ this morning,
estimates were at $57,000 raised so far. The goal is $65,000
by the end of August. The event in Glasgow typically raises
as much or more than many other larger communities.
Numbers from other cities included Missoula with
$57,500, Great Falls with $35,000 and Havre with $9,000.
Approximately 75 survivors and over 200 people
turned out for the annual event. 1,029 luminaria were lit
in honor or memory of loved ones.

More bison for the Tribes?

Leaders of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux tribes
want livestock officials to support the transfer of 49 wild
bison from Yellowstone National Park to the Fort Peck
Indian Reservation. Tribal Chairman Floyd Azure said he
will make the request to the Montana Board of Livestock
today.

The bison were captured last winter under a program
that restricts the animals seasonal migration into
Montana as many Yellowstone bison carry brucellosis.
Thats a disease feared by the livestock industry because it
can cause cattle to abort their young. Azure says the bison
have been tested to ensure they are not infected.
State veterinarian Marty Zaluski says brucellosis
testing protocols call for the animals to be held in
quarantine for up to two-and-a-half years. He says that
only then would they be considered disease-free.

climbers, using their large, muscular forequarters to climb

up rocky ledges and steep slopes of 60 degrees or more. If
threatened, they use their size, agility, and sharp horns to
protect themselves.

Summer months provide abundant food for mountain
goats including a variety of alpine flowers, grasses, and
sedges. During the long winter months, the mountain
goats diet is more sparse. Wintering high on steep cliffs
above snow line or in areas where little snow accumulates,
mountain goats find exposed vegetation not eaten during
the summer as well as shrubs and lichens. Although often
treacherous, these steep cliffs not only provide food for the
goats, but also offer protection from predators.
The health and continuity of mountain goats is one
indicator of a healthy alpine ecosystem. At the center of
the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, Glacier National
Park provides critical protection and preservation for
species of concern. When periodic monitoring began to
observe a decline in the number of goats visiting Glaciers
Walton Goat Lick, park biologists became concerned that
the overall mountain goat population in Glacier may be
unstable. To gain a greater understanding of changes in
that population, resource managers needed to gather
baseline data on them a difficult task, considering
the significant amount of staff and resources needed to
monitor a species that lives in such rugged terrain. In most
areas, aerial surveys taken by helicopter are seen as the
ideal method for counting mountain goats, but helicopters
can be particularly invasive to mountain goats, disturbing
to visitors, and expensive.
These factors spurred the creation of the High
Country Citizen Science project (HCCS), which uses a
volunteer workforce to conduct ground surveys to monitor
mountain goat population abundance, distribution, and
trend within Glacier National Park. Park managers and
researchers are exploring the full potential of utilizing
the HCCS program as well as exploring other avenues of
annual monitoring.
The park is working with the University of Montana
to test alternate, minimally invasive capture-and-collar
methods to pursue the many unanswered questions about
how mountain goats are affected by roads, adjacent trails,
and people in relation to other factors that affect goat
distribution. This information will then be incorporated
into park planning documents, such as the Going-to-theSun Road Corridor Management Plan, in order minimize
impacts to both mountain goats and visitors to the park.
By obtaining baseline data, monitoring populations, and
studying individual collared goats, park managers hope
to ensure the long-term health of this rugged, highcountry icon of Glacier.

When a woman lies...

One day, when a seamstress was sewing while

sitting close to a river, her thimble fell into the river.
When she cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, My
dear child, why are you crying?
The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen
into the water and that she needed it to help her
husband in making a living for their family.
The Lord dipped His hand into the water and
pulled up a golden thimble set with sapphires. Is this
your thimble? the Lord asked. The seamstress replied,
No.
The Lord again dipped into the river. He held out
a golden thimble studded with rubies. Is this your
thimble? the Lord asked.
Again, the seamstress replied, No.
The Lord reached down again and came up with
a leather thimble. Is this your thimble? the Lord
asked.
The seamstress replied, Yes.
The Lord was pleased with the womans honesty
and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the
seamstress went home happy.
Some years later, the seamstress was walking with
her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell
into the river and disappeared under the water.
When she cried out, the Lord again appeared
and asked her, Why are you crying? Oh Lord, my
husband has fallen into the river!
The Lord went down into the water and came up
with George Clooney. Is this your husband? The Lord
asked.
Yes, cried the seamstress.
The Lord was furious. You lied! That is an
untruth! The seamstress replied, Oh, forgive
me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I
had said no to George Clooney, you would have come
up with Brad Pitt. Then if I said no to him, you would
have come up with my husband. Had I then said yes,
you would have given me all three. Lord, Im not in the
best of health and would not be able to take care of all
three husbands, so THATS why I said yes to George
Clooney.
And so the Lord let her keep him. The moral of
this story is:
Whenever a woman lies, its for a good and
honorable reason, and in the best interest of others...
Thats our story, and were sticking to it.
