The Catholic Church Extension Society (www.catholicextension.org) is the leading supporter of
Catholic missions in the U.S. Based in Chicago, The Catholic Extension was founded in 1905 to
serve America’s missions and enable Catholics living in poor and remote areas of our country to
experience excellence in church life and all of its ministries.

Support extends to missions where the Catholic community may be too small or too poor to
support a church on its own. Catholic Extension builds national awareness and raises funds for
the Church’s needs in these communities to as to enable the essential mission of the Catholic
Church. Activities supported include subsidies for American missionaries, pastoral ministry
formation, construction of facilities, religious education and campus ministry. Catholic
Extension has more than 80,000 active donors, communicates regularly with nearly 300,000
households, and raises $20 million annually.

Director of Marketing Communications


Opportunity Proposition

The Director of Marketing Communications will join the Catholic Extension at an important
juncture in its history. With a new senior management team in place, Catholic Extension is
poised to become a premier Catholic organization. The organization is embarking on an
aggressive plan to increase awareness for its mission and the good work that it does. The
Director of Marketing Communications will help manage initiatives designed to promote
Catholic Extension and its mission not only with existing donors but also with other key
audiences.

Principal Responsibility

The Director of Marketing Communications will be integral to bringing an integrated marketing


and communications plan to life. S/he will provide marketing leadership on various initiatives
designed to communicate with existing and potential donors and other key audiences. And will
work collaboratively with internal and external resources to develop strategies and approaches to
execute. S/he also will champion internal communications efforts to ensure a consistent brand
message and image of Catholic Extension. As an important member of the marketing team, the
Director will oversee and influence all marketing and communication efforts across publications,
website, advertising, public relations, events, and direct and e-marketing programs. The Director
reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Specific Duties

• Gain an appreciation and understanding of the history and culture of the Catholic Church
Extension Society by meeting with staff and other members of the organization who will
provide insight about the mission of Catholic Extension.

• Quickly gain an understanding of historic as well as current marketing and communication


objectives, programs and results.

• Oversee the management of a variety of marketing communications initiatives including,


but not limited to:

○ Extension, a quarterly magazine

○ Our website and social media campaign

○ Media relations communications

○ Internal communications

○ Special and future communications projects

• Manage external agencies, consultants and/or vendors to deliver high-quality materials,


products, and services.

• Help to direct the design, production and evaluation of print and electronic collateral
materials.

• Work cooperatively and provide insight with other departments on enhancing the
effectiveness of marketing programs and ensuring a consistent brand message and image of
Catholic Extension.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Strong marketing and communications experience and expertise, including seven to ten years
of directly related work experience. A seasoned marketing manager with experience
managing integrated marketing and communications plans and programs. Must have
experience in branding and targeted messaging.

• An accomplished project manager, who has the ability to keep multiple projects moving
forward simultaneously, as well as to anticipate future needs and create a sense of urgency.

• Proven expertise as both a strategic thinker and project manager with a keen ability to
synchronize the two. Demonstrated ability to direct outside resources, agencies, and business
partners.

• A passionate, perceptive, energetic leader who can be an advocate for the
branding/messaging effort. Excellent skills in leading, motivating, and managing resources.

• An effective leader who can build relationships with people from diverse areas of the
organization and inspire those outside his/her direct sphere of control.

• A commitment to and understanding of the mission and teachings of the Roman Catholic
Church.

• Team player; ability to work collaboratively with others; good listener.

• Someone who has high energy/drive, a relentlessly positive attitude, and who is results-
oriented.

• Sense of humor.

• Bachelor’s degree is required.
