Buckingtheglobaltrendoflowannualprofitsandslowbusinessgrowth,the
companypostedrevenueof$6.8bnin2015,whileitsgroupbacklogjumped10%
torecordyearendlevelsof$20.7bn.
Someofitstopcontractwinsforthepast12monthsincludea$1.7bnshareofa
jointventure$3.7bnEPCcontractfortheKuwaitNationalPetroleumCompany
(KNPC)CleanFuelsProjectwithSamsungandCB&I,followedbya$1.2bnlumpsumengineering,procurementand
constructionworkwithBPfortheInSalahgasdevelopmentinAlgeria.
Inaddition,itsigneda$2.1bndealwithOrpictoupgradeexistingandnewunitsintheSoharIndustrialAreaaswellas$4bn
heavyoilprojectinconsortiumwithCCCforKuwaitOilCompanysLowerFarsheavyoildevelopmentprogramme.
Andasifthosewerentenough,theUKEPCgiantmanagedtobagoneoftheregionsmosthighlycontestedcontractsatSaudi
AramcosFadhiligasprogramme.Fadhiliisagreenfielddevelopmentlocated30kmwestofthecityofJubailintheeastern
provinceofSaudiArabia.
Whencompleted,thegasplantwillhaveacapacityforaround2,500mmscfdandwillprocesssourgasfromtheKhursaniyah
oilfieldandtheHasbahnonassociatedgasfield.
Petrofacsscopeofworkincludestheconstructionofsixsulphurrecoverytrainswithassociatedfacilitiesforthesulphurand
heavydutyoilhandling,loading,unloadingandstorage.Otheronsitefacilitiesincludesourwaterstripper,flaresystemand
wastewatertreatmentplant.
02.HyundaiHeavyIndustries
HavingworkedonsomeoftheGCCsmostfamousdownstreamdevelopmentssuchasSaudiAramcosRiyadhandRasTanura
CleanFuelprojects,theJizanrefineryandAromaticsplant,Hyundaisecuresoneofthetoppositionsinthisyearslist.
Newprojectawardsin2015includea$5.7bncontractforKuwaitsAlZourrefinery,whichwillbeexecutedinaconsortium
withtwootherEPCfirms.Hyundaiwasalsoawardeda$1.3bndealforKuwaitsCleanFuelsProjectaspartofa$3.4bn
packageforMinaAbdullahrefineryupgrade.ThecontractwasawardedtoajointventureofcompaniesincludingHyundai
Heavy,FluorCorporationandDaewooEngineering&ConstructiononApril13.
TheJVwillupgradeandexpandthedailyoilrefiningcapacityofKNPCsMinaAlAhmadiandMinaAbdullahrefineriesfrom
736,000barrelsperday(bpd)currentlyto800,000bpd,loweringthesulfurcontentoftheproducedpetroleumproductsto
5%.
HyundaiHeavyalsorecentlysignedaMemorandumofUnderstanding(MoU)withAramcocoveringmaritimeyard,engine,EPC
andfuturedownstreamoilandgasdevelopments.TheagreementcouldproveextremelyimportantfortheSouthKorean
builder,shouldAramcodecidetogoaheadwithplanstobuildnewrefineriesinAsiaandexpandthecapacityofitsexisting
units.HyundaidescribedtheMoUasamajorturnaroundpointforHHIandanopportunitytoacceleratelocalisationand
diversificationeffortsinSaudiArabia.
Knownasthelargestshipbuildingcompanyintheworld,HHIhasover40yearsofexperienceinrefiningandpetrochemical
projects,whileitsindustrialplantandengineeringdivisionisoneofthemostimportantbusinessunitsinthecompanyinterms
ofrevenue.AsofMay2015itsmarketcapitalisationstoodat$7.1bn.

Thecompany,however,fellshortofreturningtoprofitabilityin2015despiteaseriesofcomprehensiverestructuringmeasures.
Itadmitteditsaggressivestrategyforwinningcontractshadbackfired,withtheshrinkingvolumeofworkgeneratedbyother
partsofitsbusinessesalsotakingtollonthecompanysbalancesheet.Despitethis,HHIappearsdeterminedtoregainfinancial
momentum,havingsetanambitiousneworderstargetofcloseto$20bnin2016.
03.Technip
Withmorethan50yearsofexperienceintheoilrefiningsector,Techniphasbeeninvolvedinthedesignandconstructionof
30grassrootrefineriesandcompletedmorethan100majorexpansionorrevampprojectsinmorethan75countriesworldwide.
TheFrenchmultinationalhadanenviablebacklogof$19.3bnin2015,healthyrevenuesof$13.8bnandrelativelyhigh
operatingmarginof8.1%.Theoilandgassegmentrepresent97%ofthegroupsprofitandcontinuestogrowatasteady
pace.
Inits2016financialoutlook,thecompanyprojectedonshoreandoffshorerevenueofbetween$6.4bnand$6.7bnonthe
backofstrongcontractawardandprojectperformance.
Technipcurrentlyemployssome34,400peopleof116nationalitiesin45countries.
IthasstrongpresenceintheGCC,wherethroughitssubsidiaryitsecuredanapproximately$56mnfrontendengineering
design(FEED)packageaspartofaplannedexpansionandupgradeofBapcos267,000barrelsperday(bpd)refineryatSitra
locatedonBahrainseasterncoast.
Underthecontractawardedonareimbursablebasis,itsItaliansubsidiaryTechnipItalySPAwilldeliverFEEDonunitsdesigned
toprocessbottomofthebarrelcomponentsintohighvaluepetroleumproducts,aswellasallassociatedoffsitesandutilities
necessarytointegratetheproposedunitswithexistinginstallationsattherefinery,Technipsaidinastatementlastyear.
Amajormodernisation,theprojectaimstoenhancetherefinerysconfigurationandprofitabilitybyincreasingitscrude
processingcapacityto360,000bpdandimprovingitsyieldofproducts.Technipsaiditwillexecutethecontractthrougha
coordinatedeffortofitsoperatingcentresinRomeandAbuDhabi.

ChicagoBridge&IronCompany(CB&I)endedtheyearwithabacklogof$22.6bn,allofwhichcamefromprojectsoutsidethe
US.ThenewscomesasnosurprisegiventhecompanysstronggeographicdiversificationpushnondomesticE&Cprojects
accountedfor35%ofits2015revenuewhichtotalled$12.9bn.
Oneofthecontractorsmostimportantprojectsabroadincludesa$2.6bnordertobuildOmansLiwaPlasticscomplex.The
dealwillseeajointventurebetweenCB&IandTaiwansCTCICorporationconstructthesteamcrackerandassociatedutilities.
CB&Isscopeofworkalsoincludestheconstructionofcryogenicandatmosphericstoragetanksandpipespoolfabrication.
ThecrackerwilluseCB&IslatestethylenetechnologytheSRTcrackingheaters,anditsrecoverysectiondesign,featuring
lowpressureseparationandmixedrefrigeration.
2016sawCB&Iwinacontracttodesignanethylbenzeneplant,whichwillformpartofEgyptsTahrirpetrochemicalscomplex
duetobecommissionedin2019.Thecomplexwillproducearound400,000tonnesofstyrenemonomerperyear,utilising
CB&Isethylbenzene(EB)andstyrene(SM)technologies,whichwilluseadvancedcatalyststohelpminimiseoperatingcosts.
IntheUAE,CB&Iwasawardedacontractforapproximately$60mnwithZakumDevelopmentCompany(ZADCO)forthe
refurbishmentoftwocrudeoilstoragetanksonZirkuIslandlocatedapproximately25kmnorthwestofAbuDhabi.
Newawardsinfortheyearalsoincludeordersfortheengineeringandconstructionofliquidsethanecrackerandassociated
unitsintheMiddleEastandsignificantLNGdevelopmentsinEastAfrica,whichthecompanyexpectstobookoverthecoming
monthsof2016.

ProjectinKuwait.Thecompanystrucka$3.8bnjointventuredeal,inwhichitholds43%stake,withUKsPetrofacandCB&Is
Dutchsubsidiaryowing47%and10%respectively.Samsungwillberesponsiblefortheengineering,procurement,
constructionandprecommissioningoftheMinaAbdullahIrefinerypackage,partofKNPCs$12bninitiativetoupgradeits
refineriestoproducecleanerandlowergradefuelsfordomesticconsumptionandexport.
Attheendof2015,SamsungbuilttheutilitiesandoffsitesattheRuwaisexpansionproject,whichaddedanextra417,000
bpdofdistillationcapacitytoTakreerscomplex,morethandoublingtheunitssize.
TheKoreanheavyweightalsoplayedaninstrumentalroleinSaudiAramcosWasitCogeneration&SteamGenerationProject,
winningthesecondpackagefortheconstructionofapowerplantwhichprovides750MWofpowerand1,743tonnesperhour
(t/h)ofsteamtothegasprocessingunit.
TheprojecthelpedSamsungmakesignificantinroadsintheMiddleEastspowerplantmarket,winningtheShaybahand
Yanbu3projectsinSaudiArabiaandworkforan180kmpipelineandacentralprocessingfacilityaspartofAlgeriasTimimoun
fielddevelopmentworth$800mn.Thedistributionnetworkisexpectedtocomeonstreamnextyear.Worthnotingisthat
SamsungwastheonlyKoreancompanyselectedfortheprojectinapooloftopnotchEuropeanandJapaneseEPCfirms.

KuwaitsAlZourRefinery
DespitetheeconomicslowdowntakingatollonEPCcontractorsglobally,TecnicasReunidas(TR)managedtoincreaseits
backlogby44%toanewhighof$13.6bnin2015.Sinceitstartedoperations,TecnicasReunidas(TR)hasdesignedand
constructedapproximately80%ofSpanishrefiningcapacity,300refiningfacilitiesand100petrochemicalunitsthroughout
theworld.Withover46yearsofengineeringexperience,thecompanycurrentlydevelopstechnologiesofotherlicensorsas
wellascompleteandspecificdesignsofitsownforalargenumberofrefiningunits.
Overtheyears,TRhassecuredanenviablereputationasoneoftheworldstopEPCfirmsforitstechnologicalexpertise,
numberofreferencesandexecutedprojects.SomeofitsiconicandmostfamousworksincludetheworldfamousMarathon
refinerynowoperatedbyRepsol,andtheChemIIIcomponentoftheSadarapetrochemicalcomplexinSaudiArabiaamuch
welcomewinfortheSpanishfirm,whichinrecentyearshasfacedsignificantcompetitionfromAsianEPCcontractorstosecure
workondownstreamprojectsintheGCC.
SaudiArabiaplayedanimportantroleinthecompanysbalancesheets,withitsbacklogrising38%to$7bn,boostedby
awardsfortheKingdomsflagshipPetrokemyaandKemyaplants,alongsideprojectunderwayinEgyptandTurkey.
However,TRstoporderintheGCCwasforKuwaitsAlZourRefinery.Itsscopeofworkincludestheengineering,supply,
constructionandcommissioningofthreecrudedistillationunitswithtotalcapacityof210,000bpsdeach,threeatmospheric
residuedesulphurationunitswithtotalcapacityof110,000bpsdeach,three62,000bpsddieselhydrotreatingunits,two
naphthahyrdrotreatingunits(18,200BPSD),twokerosenehydrotreatingunits(53,000bpsd),asaturatedgasunit
(8,500bpsd)andaheavyoilcoolingunit.TheAlZourRefineryProjectissettoboosttheexperienceandactivitiesofTRin
Kuwait,andtogetherwitharecentawardofanotherimportantgasprojectforKNPC,accountsforatotalof$6,000mnworth
ofordersinKuwaitalone.
KuwaitNationalPetroleumCompany,asubsidiaryofKuwaitPetroleumCorporation(KPC),isthemaindownstreamentity
responsibleforallrefiningandgasprocessingprojectsinKuwait.

Tecnimontwasawardedacloseto$900mntobuildpolyethyleneandpolypropyleneplantsatOrpics$3.6bnLiwaPlastic
IndustriesComplex(LPIC),markingthecompanysfirstevercontractwininOman.
WorkingononeoftheSultanatesmostimportantdownstreamprojectswouldenableTecnimonttoexpanditsindustrial
footprintintheGCCandgiveitauniquepositionintheOmanimarket,thecompanysaidinastatement.

AsmostEPCcontractorswaitforthecloudsoverIrantoclear,ItalysSaipemtooktheglobalconstructioncommunityby
surprisewhenitsignednotone,nottwo,butthreeenergyandinfrastructuredealssincethestartoftheyear.
Thefirstagreement,whichwassignedwiththePersianOil&GasDevelopmentCompany,outlinespotentialcooperationin
revampingandupgradingtheParsShirazandTabrizrefineries.

bagged$5.7bntobuildthesupportunitsandinfrastructureatthe615,000barrelsperday(bpd)refinery.
Beingselectedforsuchahighkeyprojectisbynomeansacoincidence.Fluorhasdevelopedsomeoftheregionsmost
