Question 4
Read the article about P. Ramlee.
P. Ramlee, whose real name is Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak
Puteh, was born in Penang on the 22nd of March 1929, on the
morning of Aidilfitri for that year. His father was an immigrant, a
sailor from Lhoksemauwe in Acheh, Indonesia while his mother,
Che Mah binti Hussein, originated from Kubang Buaya, Seberang
Prai, Penang. He received his early schooling at the Malay School
in Kampung Jawa and later at the Francis Light School until
standard five. He subsequently continued his education at the
Penang Free School.
During the Japanese Occupation of Malaya, he was unable to
continue with his schooling. In order to make a living, he worked as an office boy at a tin
mine. At the same time, he also enrolled at the Japanese Army School and had brief
opportunity to acquaint himself with the Japanese Language and Music. His hardworking and
friendly disposition made him popular with the Japanese soldiers. When World War II ended,
P. Ramlee continued his schooling at the Penang Free School, up to standard seven. He was
active in sports and had a liking for football and sepak raga in 1939, he represented his school
in the football team.
P. Ramlee was born with an artistic flair. That was an undeniable fact and it was
obvious even in his early youth. Starting his familiarization in the musical arts at the age of
around 13, the ukulele and violin were among the early instruments he took up. He displayed
his musical talents with contemporary songs and melodious Keroncong tunes together with
his friends. It was through this that he received his first commission from Radio Malaya to
entertain at social gatherings and events around Penang. P. Ramlees affinity for singing and
music overshadowed his academic studies at school; which was widely attested to by the
teachers who taught him.
While singing at official functions, P. Ramlee would often be accompanied by a band,
such as the Pancaragam Teruna Sekampung (All Kampung Youth Orchestra) and the
Bintang Sore. His melodious voice soon became the talk of the town and soon many
wanted to know more about his new star, a thin and pimple faced teenager. When did P.
Ramlee start using the letter P to his name? It happened apparently when he took part in a
singing contest in 1947. The letter stand for Puteh, his fathers name and Ramlee his
fathers younger brother name.
The first song he composed was none other than Azizah. It was written in 1945 and
dedicated to a girl of his fancy by that name. He gave the song its first public airing at an
Agricultural Fair in Bukit Mertajam in June 1948. Without much difficulty, news of this great
new voice reached the ears of BS Rajhans a well-known film director in Singapore. An offer
came from Rajhans which was to change the course of P. Ramlees destiny. He was invited to
Singapore to work at the Jalan Ampas Studios for a Malay film production. Seizing the
opportunity, P. Ramlee saw himself moving to the Lion City, bringing along with him a
thousand and one ideas and hope of artistic achievement.

Question 5
Read the poem below carefully. Then, answer questions (a) (d).
Mr Nobody
I know a funny little man,
As quiet as a mouse,
Who does the mischief that is done
In everybodys house!
Theres no one ever sees his face,
And yet we all agree
That every plate we break was cracked
By Mr Nobody.
Tis he who always tears our books,
Who leaves the door ajar.
He pulls the buttons from our shirts,
And scatters pins afar,
That squeaking door will always squeak,
For, prithee, dont you see.
We leave the oiling to be done
By Mr Nobody.
He puts damp wood upon the fire,
That kettles cannot boil;
His are the feet that bring in mud,
And all the carpets soil.
The papers are always mislaid,
Who has them last but he?
Theres no one tosses them about
But Mr Nobody.
The finger marks upon the door
By none of us are made;
We never leave the blinds unclosed,
To let the curtains fade;
The ink we never spill; the boots
That lying round you see
Are not our boots they all belong
To Mr. Nobody.

Around the World in 80 Days
Based on the novel Around the World in 80 Days written by Jules Verne, there are
many important events in the story. However, one important event that changes the main
characters life is when the main character, Phileas Fogg meets Aouda.
Foggs life becomes more meaningful after he meets Aouda. He falls in love with her
and is willing to help her. He breaks his journey to save her when he finds out that Aoudas
life is in danger. After being rescued from the bandits in the forest, Aouda joins them in their
journey. Both Fogg and Aouda spend a lot of time together. When they arrive in Hong Kong,
Fogg discovers that Aoudas cousin has moved away and she has no one. Fogg then requests
that Aouda follow them on their trip to Europe. Fogg cares a lot about Aoudas well-being.
When he thinks that he has lost the bet and has nothing to offer her, he feels very bad.
However, Aouda is very grateful to him for all the sacrifices made and continues to stay by
his side. Finally, they confess their love for each other. They get married at the end of the
trip.
In conclusion, I have chosen the event where Fogg meets Aouda, as the important
event in the novel because it changes Foggs life to be more meaningful.
when he cannot sleep. He becomes more and more tired. He looks haggard. He cannot treat
his wife well. He is not honest with her. His wife, Andrea, notices the change in his attitude
and behavior, and becomes unhappy. Taylors work is also affected. He has difficulty thinking
about the work that he has to do. Soon, Taylor is afraid to go home and sleep, as he is afraid
that he will have the same dream again. He is no longer a happy person after the strange
meeting.
In conclusion, I have chosen the event where John Taylor meets himself, as the
important event in the novel because it changes John Taylors life to be upside down and how
he deals with it.
