Course Description:
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Casa Grande High School! Casa Grandes
English Language Arts curriculum is aligned with Californias Common Core Standards.
This year the RSP Department will be using many of the core literature books that are
being read in the college prep English classes here at Casa Grande High School. Our
students will benefit by being exposed to literature that is age appropriate and
intellectually stimulating. Students will have an opportunity to discuss classic literature
and well-known works. Students will be provided support in the RSP setting to stretch
their existing knowledge while gaining new experiences in reading and writing. We will
also spend time developing reading comprehension and written language skills.
Students will be expected to write a number of essays, and complete at least one
research paper. Our goal is to provide students with classroom support as they build
new skills in English Language Arts.

All course documents (assignments, homework, notes, due dates, etc.) can be found on
my classroom website. Please use the website as a way to stay organized in the class!
Google Classroom:
In addition to the class website, assignments will often be completed through Google
Classroom. Students are expected to remember their Google accounts, keep them
private, and turn in assignments as requested. Assignments that appear on Google
Classroom will also be on the class website.
Classroom Expectations:
Students are expected to arrive to class on time prepared to work and learn. We are all
entitled to work and learn in a safe and comfortable environment. All students are
expected to treat each other with respect and follow the rules outlined in the Casa
Grande Student Handbook.
Attendance Policy:

Students are considered on time when they are in their seats and ready to work when
the bell rings. Students who arrive to class late are considered tardy and will be issued
a one hour detention that must be served within the next two days.
Grading Policy:
Grading guidelines were developed so that students will have a clear understanding of
teacher expectations. Please be sure to review them with your student. While a lot of
reading will be done in class, students will be expected to do some independent
reading for homework. Students should expect regularly assigned homework. Please
support your child by asking him or her to share information about what we are
learning at school.
Grades will be weighted as follows:
35 % - Tests/Quizzes/Pop Quizzes
25% - Classwork (Journal Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary)
40% - Homework (Assignments, Essays)
Daily participation is a large component of being successful in this class. Students are
expected to participate in group discussions every class period.
Make-up Work:
It is the students responsibility to get make-up work from the teacher following an
absence. All work can be found on the class website. Students must turn in make-up
work the next class period after it is assigned unless it is an extended assignment or
project.
Late Work:
Homework must be turned in within the first 5 minutes of class. After that, it will be
considered late. Students may use an extra class period to turn in work, otherwise
points will be lost. Students have a week after the due date to turn in late work.
Electronics Policy:
Please refer to the Casa Grande Student Handbook. All cell phones and any
unauthorized electronic devices must be turned off and out of sight during class time.
Student iPads are to only be used for classwork when the teacher designates that it is
time to use them. Devices may be confiscated and returned to students at the end of
the day if they do not follow the classroom policy.
Food and Drinks:
Drinks are allowed in class, however food is not. Students may eat before and after
class. As long as students are respectful of the classroom, these rules will remain in
class.
Course Literature:
Stargirl
Of Mice and Men

To Kill a Mockingbird
The Art of Racing in the Rain
Greek Mythology

I understand the requirements of this course and will put forth every
effort to be successful. I understand that it is my responsibility to ask
for feedback and assistance when having difficulty with assignments,
when requesting make-up work, and when I need extended time on my
work.
