Kultur Aktivitten
Here are some activities designed to give you an experience in living like the Germans
do. You need to choose one activity each term to do ON YOUR OWN TIME (you can count the
time you spend toward your study log). After each activity, you need to do a page write-up
(typed, 12 point font, Times New Roman font) describing what you did and how you felt about
the activity. These will be due two days before the end of each term.
Choose from the following list:
1. Eat your biggest meal at lunch three days in the week: have only a sandwich or salad for
dinner.
2. Go to an international store, or a fabulous grocery store and purchase some German food
that youve never tried (cheeses, bread, pastries, meats, etc.) Share it with a friend.
3. Get together with a friend or two and socialize over soft drinks or juice. DO NOT
WATCH T.V. OR VIDEOS. TALK WITH YOUR FRIENDS FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR.
4. Play soccer or go for a bike ride for hour, twice in one week.
5. For two days, drink no tap wateronly bottled water. Drink the bottle water and any
soda or juices at room temperature-no ice.
6. Visit one friend and bring him/her flowers, cake, cookies, or a small gift.
7. Go to a play, symphony, or instrumental performance.
8. Spend at least one hour in a museum. Look around youenjoy the exhibit.
9. Get involved with a political or environmental group and become familiar with their
issues.
10. Prepare a 5 course meal and take at least 2 hours to eat it (An example would be
something like 1st-soup, 2nd-salad, 3rd-main meal, 4th-bread and cheese, 5th-dessert).
11. For one week, find out the daily temperatures in Celsius and record it.
12. Label at least 20 items in your house/room with their German names, give the teacher a
list of the vocabulary used.
13. Eat no dessert for one week, other than home made/baked dishes or desserts bought in a
bakery. NO STORE-BOUGHT GOODS. No candy, or factory-made cookies, cakes, or so
on.
14. Become familiar with current events. Read the newspaper every day for one week.
15. Find a friend who has also been reading the newspaper. Sit down and have a hour
conversation about something going on in the world. (In your write-up tell me what you
talked about).
16. Find a German radio station on the Internet and listen for half an hour. Write down words
that you recognized, and respond to your impression of the music in your write-up.
17. Rent a movie from a public library on German, Austria, or Switzerland and watch it. Take
notes and hand them in.
18. Look up holidays in Germany/Austria/Switzerland and read about at least two of them.
Your write-up should include some of the history and facts that you learned.

19. Take a trip using public transportation, either the bus, the TRAX, or the Frontrunner.
20. Find a local German restaurant, store or bakery and purchase something tasty (i.e.
Seigfrieds).
21. Find a German recipe (in English or German) and try to make the dish (I can help
translate if you need help).
22. Attend Oktober Fest at Snowbird.
These are only a few ideas of things that you can do to experience a little bit of German culture.
If you have any other ideas, come see me for approval.
