Tarwirri Update-Deadly Law


Earlier in August Tarwirri ran another LEAP
into Law workshop with Yr 9-10 Indigenous
students from Melbourne and Shepparton. The
workshops were conducted by Tarwirri student
members Shane Fry, Zack Smith and Kate
Chapman. The day began with students hearing
from Ruth Barson and Laura Wilson(Tarwirri
Member) from the Human Rights Law Centre.
From there the group went across to the County
Court for a tour with Terrie Stewart(Tarwirri
Elders and Respected Persons Panel) and heard
from Judge David Parsons. The day was
wrapped up with a lunch at Victoria Legal Aid
where students got to speak with a number of
VLA's staff.

Tarwirri Members Social Event-Wednesday 24 August 2016


Tarwirri's next social event is an afterwork drinks function at The Crafty Squire on
Wednesday 24 August 2016. Pop in afterwork or class and join other Indigenous law
students and legal professionals for a chance to catch up and unwind.

Professional Opportunity-Junior Lawyer-WestJustice

Position: Family Violence/Tenancy Lawyer

Westjustice is seeking to employ a full time junior lawyer on a fixed term contract
(expiring 31 October 2017) to be part of the family violence team and the tenancy team.
The lawyer will join the family violence legal team and tenancy legal team to undertake
work that will improve the lives of women and children experiencing family violence,
and to help vulnerable tenants engage their tenancy rights. The lawyer will be based at
the Werribee office but will be required to work at the Sunshine Magistrates Court,
VCAT (Werribee and Sunshine) and at CoHealth in Braybrook. The lawyer will also be
required to operate tenancy clinics at the Werribee and Footscray offices.

Practical Legal Training Bursary


Tarwirri is once again proud to partner with the Law Institute of Victoria in promoting
the LIV's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bursary. This Bursary is open to all final
year students and those graduating in semester 1 2017. The Bursary covers the entire
course fee of the recipients Practical Legal Traineeship.

opportunity to organise an appointment to either assist in developing a cover
letter/resume or to make adjustments for a prospective job application. There are no

Victorian Bar- Mentoring Opportunities
The Bar organises a legal mentoring program that is open to Indigenous law students
or graduates. Each participant is linked up with a barrister and a Judge (Supreme
Court, Federal Court or County Court) to facilitate long term career assistance. Tarwirri
is happy to organise introductions and for more information or an information form
please contact the office.
