    ThisyearmarksthecentennialoftheMigratoryBirdTreatyAct(MBTA).TheActwassignedbetween
    TheU.S.andCanadainitially,andlaterbetweentheU.S.andMexico,JapanandtheSovietUnion.

    Whenhearingthetitle,MBTA,onewouldprobablysay,thatsagoodthing.

    Inthisdayandagemostofuswouldbehorrifiedifspecieswerehuntedoutofseasonandsoldin
    marketplaces,killedfortheirplumage,ortheireggsandnestscollectedthatissoearly1900s.

    Yet,presently,millionsofmigratorybirdsarebeingkilled.How?Wethoughttheywereprotected?

    Considerthatbirdscollidewithmanmadestructuresbuildings,electricaltowersandlines,and
    poorlyplacedwindturbinestonameafew.

    Structuresthatinvadetheairspaceandmorestructureswithlightsorreflectivewindowsaredoing
    birdsin.

    Howmanybirdshavestruckwindowsatyourhomeandhavebeenkilled,andyourhomeisjustone
    ofmillions.Dothemath,itaddsup.

    Birdsarecollateraldamage,poisonedastheyaccidentallyfeedinanagriculturalarea,getcaughtin
    fishingnetsanddrown,orarekilledbycats,feralorroamingpets,ashumansbringtheircompanion
    animalsintosuburbanorruralareas.

    Butprobablyoneofthemostsignificantaspectsishabitatdestruction.

    Birdsneedplacestobreedinthespringandsummer,tospendthewinter,mostofteninCentralor
    SouthAmerica,andjustasimportantly,themigratoryroutesinbetweensotheycantorest,feedand
    refuel.

    Wehaveallseenit,anotherhousingdevelopmenttearsawayatawoodlot,ashoppingareaengulfsa
    shrublandoranoldfieldturnedintosterilecropland.Allhadprovidedhabitat,evenifitwere
    stopoverhabitatformigrants,nowitisgone.

    MigratorybirdsaredecliningdespitetheMBTAandwecanalldosomethingaboutit.Updatingand
    strengtheningtheMBTAisexactlywhatTheNationalAudubonSocietyisworkingtoward.

    WesternCuyahogaAudubon,otherAudubonchaptersandotherconservationandbirding
    organizationsneedtogetthewordouttoourneighbors,oureducators,ourlegislatorsanyonewho
    canmakeadifferencewhichisallofus.

    AskPresidentObamatoStrengthentheMigratoryBirdTreatyAct
    TimeisrunningoutforPresidentObamatoact.Itonlytakesaminutetoensurehabitatconservation
    forgenerationstocome.
