Lyndale ESL Program:

Summer 2016 ESL Program Internship Agreement


Term of volunteer internship:
May 2016 through August 18, 2016
May 31-June 2: intern serves as classroom volunteer
June 13-16: intern leads leveled group with teacher-provided lessons
Remainder of internship: intern plans lessons and instructs leveled group
Expected time commitment and participation: 11-15 hours weekly.
Participation includes:
Weekly: 6 hours teaching (2 classes/week x 3 hours)
15-20 minutes after each class to help clean up room and debrief with teacher
~4 hours of lesson prep (curriculum provided; materials/copier available @LNA office)
some e-mail communication with teacher as needed
Plus:

2-hour kickoff meeting: orientation to LNA, complete HR materials, discuss internship


agreement, brief overview of MN ABE system, MABE database, LNA curriculum and
College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS)/Transitions Integration Framework

(TIF)
At least 1 Education staff meetings (occurring monthly) and at least 1 all-staff meeting

(occurring monthly) during the period of internship


Monthly 1-hour check-ins to be arranged with teacher
1.5-hour final meeting to go over teaching observation feedback and to reflect on
overall learning, successes and challenges of internship

Absences: please inform teacher ASAP if you must miss a class or appointment. If you need to
miss class at the last minute due to illness or emergency, text teacher ASAP.

Program/teacher goals:

Instructional support: intern will provide lesson instruction to 1-2 leveled groups
within multilevel class, allowing classroom instructor to give more attention to

planning for and instructing other groups.


Provide guidance, institutional experience, classroom training, and instructional and
professional development resources for an emerging educator in adult literacy

Intern goals:

Understand general structure and expectations within MN adult basic education


Learn about literacy needs particular to adult learners (specifically those represented
among Lyndale ESL Programs individual learners and the populations we serve)

Gain lesson-planning and classroom teaching experience in adult basic education and

receive guidance/reflect on each lesson with an experienced ABE teacher


Observe/support mgmt of literacy volunteers; observe classroom mgmt
Experience community program-building via education/LNA staff meetings
Teaching observation and feedback by professional ABE instructor
Obtain a professional reference reflecting accomplishments and abilities upon
completion of internship

LNA provides a $100 monthly stipend for this volunteer internship, paid by check.
