AIM:
The project aims at counting the cars entering into the
parking area and also to indicate cars exiting the parking area.
OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
The objective of the project is to indicate the space
availability in the parking area of commercial centers , shopping
malls, etc., A simple application example illustrates the use of an
up/down counter to solve an everyday problem. The problem is to
devise a means of monitoring available spaces in a nine space
parking garage and provide for an indication of a full condition by
illuminating a display sign and lowering a gate bar at the entrance.
This can be extended for one-hundred spaces also by cascading.
PRINCIPLE:
Simple concept of up counting and down counting is used
in this project. When a car enters, the entry display is up counted
and the exit display is down counted .And vise versa when a car
leaves.

LIST OF COMPONENTS REQUIRED:

IC 74190

IC 7476

IC 7447

Seven segment display

LM 358

IC 7404

DPDT Switch

Push button

5V power supply

IC 74190:
Counting circuit is designed by using this IC

Input to the pin 5 decides up counting or down counting.

When logic 0 is given to this pin the IC counts up and when logic 1
is given to this pin the IC counts down.
Output of the pin 12 is logic 1 if the count is maximum or
minimum. The output of the IC is BCD only (that is 0000 to 1001)
Pin 4 is enable input, it is kept low. Ripple clock output pin
13 is used when cascading counters. This device can be preset to
any desired BCD digit as determined by the states of data inputs
when the load input is logic 0.It has the maximum Clock Frequency
of 20-25 MHZ.
Clock input is given to pin number 14.Pin 16 is connected
to the supply and the pin 8 is grounded.

IC 7476:

This is a JK flip flop which is used to give the input to the

counter circuit.

This is the truth table for JK flip flop. Pins 9 and 12 are the J
and K inputs are given from DPDT switch. Pins 11 and 10 are the
outputs to counter circuit.

IC 7447:
This is BCD to seven segment decoder which is used to
convert the BCD input into decimal output.BCD output from the IC
74190 is given to this decoder IC. This decoder drives the seven
segment display.

SEVEN SEGMENT DISPLAY:

A seven-segment display is a set of seven bar-shaped LED
(light-emitting diode) or LCD (liquid crystal display) elements,
arranged to form a squared-off figure 8. If all elements are
activated, the display shows a numeral 8. When some of the
elements are activated but not others, any single-digit numeral from
0 to 9, as well as most uppercase and lowercase letters of the
English alphabet can be portrayed.
This project uses common anode seven segment display
type. Because decoder 7447, drives only CA type.

LM 358:
This is the analog comparator. The LM358 series is made using
two internally compensated, twostage operational amplifiers

WORKING:
The DPDT switch is supplied with 5V.Two outputs from the
switch is given to J and K in the flip flop. Q output is given into pin
5 of first 74190 IC and Q is given to the second. The BCD output
from the counter circuit is decoded using 7447 and fed into seven
segment display. The switch control symbolizes entry and exit.
Accordingly the output is displayed. When the exit seven segment
display displays 0 then the comparator LM358 gives 4 to 5V output
(logic 1) which is used to illuminate the LED indicating
unavailability of space. The output from the 12th pin of IC counting
the entering cars
CONCLUSION:
This project car parking system is useful in indicating the
availability of space in the parking area. This is applicable in
commercial centers, shopping malls, etc.,
The IC 74190, 74191, 74193 are the counter ICs. The reason
for choosing IC 74190 is to give a BCD output. But the other two
ICs give binary outputs. IC 74193 has two different pins for up
counting and down counting.
FEEDBACK:
Digital Systems laboratory classes gave good exposure to
digital ICs and digital circuits. Support from staff-in-charge gave us
good ideas to be executed and it worked out. This type of learning
is most effective. Our team enjoyed and learnt new things. We, now
have the confidence to take up projects in future.
