"Amazing grace"
David Lesniaski
Notes by the composer
This is a very free-form prelude, based, in part, on the ornamented style of singing occasionally
heard in shape-note music. The highly-ornamented melody should be played freely, but the
rhythm in the left hand and pedal should be fairly steady in order to give the meldy the chance
to be flexible within a consistent pulse. The tempo should be slow enough so the 32nd notes
aren't rushed, but fast enough so the piece doesn't drag, especially at the beginning.
Select a warm reed for the solo and a solid (but not too thick) selection of stops for the
accompaniment.
This composition is an effective prelude any tiime of year, and also works well in recital.
This piece also is available on the Sibelius website: http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/ along with
several other of my organ works.
