BACHELOR OF CIVIL ENGINEERING EXAMINATION, 2011

( 4th Year, 1st Semester )

DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES - II

Time : Three Hours

Full Marks - 100

(50 marks for each Part)

Use a separate Answer-Script for each Part

PART - I
Answer any Two questions
Assume reasonable values of any data, if required (S456-2000,
IS3370 and SP16 are allowed in the examination hall.
1.

Design a RCC slab panel dimension 5m x 6m against a live

load = 2KN/m2. Two adjacent edges of the slab panel are
continuous and remaining two edges are discontinuous. Apply
_
"limit state method of design" according to IS 456 2000.
Consider M20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 grade HYSD bars.
Check against deflection also.

2.

25

Design a RCC short column with a suitable pile cap against an

axial

compressive

Mx = 200 KN

force

P = 1500KN

and

moments

and My = 150 KN . Partial safety factor

against load = 1.2.

Apply Limit state method of design

according to IS4562000. Capacity of 450 dia piles = 425 KN.

Consider M20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 grade HYSD
bars.

Design the short wall and longwall of a RCC underground

Determine the maximum bending moment at centre and at

quarter span due to class AA tracked loading. Also determine
the maximum shear free at support and at quarter span.
25

water tank of dimension 6m x 2.8m x 2.5 high. Water table

may be considered at GL. soil =16 KN/m3. bt = 1.8 N/mn2.
Consider M20 grade of concrete and Fe415 grade of HYSD
bars.

Part - II

Assume reasonable values of data if required. IS-875 (all parts),

IS-1893, IRC-6 and IRC-21 are allowed in the examination hall.
Answer any two questions.
4.

5.

A commercial building (25m x 25m in plan) has 10 storeys and

located at Chennai. Columns are placed 5m c/c along both
direction. The floor to floor height of the building is 3.0m. Calculate
the lateral forces due to wind. Determine the bending moment
and shear force of the beams and columns at 6th floor level.
Show also the B.M and S.F diagrams.

A R.C.C. tee beam (simply supported) bridge is to be constructed
for a river crossing a National Highway. The following data is
given
l

Clear width of roadway = 7.5 m

Average thickness of wearing coat = 100mm.

No. of Main girder = 3

No. of Cross girder = 6

Spacing of Main girder = 2.4m

Span of the bridge (c/c of bearing) = 24m

Size of Kerb = 300mm (depth) x 700mm (width)

Height of parnpet railing = 1m.

6.

a)

State the various vertical irregularities in buildings in

connection with seismic analysis.
3

b)

What is the significance of Response Reduction factor? 2

c)

List the loading combinations to be considered for DL, LL,

WL, EL.
3

d)

What are the different types of losses in prestressing?

e)

Draw the brusting stress diagram in the anchorage zone and

explan it?
3

f)

A post tension beam (300mm x 500mm) is simply supports

over a span of 12m. 2 cables each 5 No.10 are located at
an eccentricity of 100mm. Initial prestress = 1600 MPa.
Calculate (a) Deflection at the centre of span due prestress
and self weight (b) Deflection at the centre at service
condition. Assume 20% loss of prestress, grade of concrete
= M 35 and superimposed live load = 18KN/m.
