Important Terminologies
Means usually an agency,
instrument, or method used to
attain an end. These are also
known as available resources
(natural or financial).
Ends the result sought by an
action.
Needs things we need for us to
live.
Wants things we do not really
need, but we want to have.
Goods are concrete objects or
things which satisfy needs (the
need for food is satisfied by rice,
fish, meat etc.).
Services economic activity
where an immaterial exchange of
value occurs.
Products made at a cost and
each is sold at a price. It may be in
the form of goods or services.
Mans Needs and Wants
Basic Needs
Needs that man cannot do without.
They have to be satisfied for him to
live minimally as a human being.
These include food, shelter, and
clothing.
Limited Means
If means would have also been
unlimited to satisfy unlimited wants,
there would have been no economic
problem. The reality of the life is
different i.e., the existing supply of
resources is inadequate in relation to
the known desires of individuals. This
gives rise to the problem of scarcity
which is the basis of all economic
problems.
