Preface
Beforeyougetoutthesledgehammerandablockofwoodandstartpounding,thereareafewthingstoconsider.Mostimportantly:
Howlonghasitbeensincetheenginewaslastturnedover?
Whatconditionwastheengineleftinwhenlastturnedover,isthereoilinitstill,orwater?Orisitdry,withoutoil?
Istheengineseizedbecauseofneglect/rust/corrosion,orisitbecauseofamechanicalfailurelikeabrokencrankshaft,thrownrod,spun
bearingorseizedpistonfromdetonation,etc.?

Takingalookattheengine
Startbyremovingtheaircleaner.Whileremovingtheaircleaner,checkformoistureorwaterpuddlesintheoilbathorinthebottomofthe
filterhousing.Itmightbedrynow,butlookforevidenceoftherehavingbeenstandingwaterinthepast.Thereasonthatyouarelookingfor
moistureistodeterminehowmuchwatercouldbewithintheengine.Ifsnowisblownintotheenginecompartment,itwillmeltandpuddleout
insidetheaircleaner,intakemanifold,liftervalley,etc,butnotnecessarilymakeitswaydeepintotheengine.Iftheenginehasbeenfloodedby
meansofoverlandfloodingandrisingwater,thenyoucouldalsohaveanaccumulationofsiltanddirtwithintheengine.Dirtandwaterwithin
theengineistheworstkindofenginelockthatyoucanexperience.

Pullthedipstickandcheckforwaterintheengineoil.Ifyoufindwaterintheoil,trytodeterminehowmuchthereis.Startbyremovingtheoil
drainplugfromtheoilpanandwatchwhatcomesout.Waterwillexitfirst,followedbywhateveroilthatmaybeleft.Iftheenginewasflooded
excessively,therewillbebasicallynooilleftitwillhavebeenpushedoutbytherisingwater.Theratioofwatertooilthatcomesoutoftheoil
panisanindicationofwhetherthereciprocatingassemblywassubmergedornot.
Opentheradiatorcapandcheckforcoolant.Ifnocoolantispresentintheuppertank,openthedraintapandcheckforthepresenceof
antifreeze.Youcanremoveanupperradiatorhosehousingandcheckunderthethermostat,too.Insomecases,youcanopenanengineblock
taporremoveawaterjacketstudtolookforcoolant,too.

Surfaceetched,otherwisesalvageableifinspectionisOK

Beyondhope,needstobebored,newpistonsandrings

Understandingwaterdamage
Ifthewaterisfromanexternalsourcesuchasrain,anditcameintotheaircleanerviathebutterflystudontheaircleaner,chancesarethereis
onlyasmallquantityinonlyafewoftheenginebores.Youcanonlyhavesomanyintakevalvesopenatonetime,andthewaterwouldhave
onlymigratedintothosecylinderbores.Therefore,youcouldonlyhavetwoorthreestuckpistonsattheworst,notallofthem.Insuchacase,
thelikelihoodoffreeingtheengineismuchbetter.Ontheotherhand,iftheenginehadbeenfloodedbyrisingfloodwaters,watercouldhave
enteredviatheexhaustsystem.Tomakemattersworse,watermayhavealsoenteredthroughtheoilbreatherandisnow(orwas)presentinthe
oilpan.Floodwatersalsohavealargepresenceofsilt,chemicalsofunknownnature,andvaryingpH.
Floodwaterdamage
Thesiltparticlespresentinfloodwatercouldaccumulatedeepinsideoftheengineandhangontotheroughcastingsurfacesofalltheinternal
workings.Theseparticlesaresosmallthatwhentheyareinsolutiontheywillinfiltratetheoilclearanceofabearing.Whenthewaterdries,
theywillformalayerofdustwithinthebearing.Thedustwillwickuptheoilfromthesurfaceandwatervaporfromtheairwillstarttorustthe
steelsurfaceovertime.Thedustmayalsohaveacidsandalkalies(caustics)attachedtoit,andtogetherwithwatervaporwilletchthebearing
andjournalsurfaces.
Afteraflood,newer,essentialandoperationalvehiclestakepriorityforbeingrepaired,otherswillhavetowait.Manyfloodedengineswilljust
havetowait,sometimesuntilafterthewinterfreezeup,sometimesevenlonger.Internaldamageandcrackedblocksandheadsareoftenthe
resultoffrozenwater.Sometimestheywillendupbeingjunkedforthecastiron.Iftheseenginesaregottentobeforesuchdamageoccurs,it
maybepossibletosalvagethemintact.

Preparation
Whatyoudiscoveredabovewillleadyoutounderstandingthesolutiontounstickingtheengine.Anenginethatwasinacoveredshed,hadno
visiblesignofwaterinfiltration,andwasfullofoilandcoolantbutstuckisusuallyaneasyfix.Therings,whicharecastiron,areusually
stucktothecastironcylinderwallsbutonlyinthecylinderswhichareopentotheatmosphere.Ifyoufollowedthefiringorderoftheengine,
youcoulddeterminewhichareopencylindersandwhichareclosed.Youcanstartbypullingthesparkplugsoutandinjectpenetratingoil
(http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Removing_stuck_fasteners#Some_recommended_penetrating_fluids)withatriggertypeoilcan.
Dieselfuelreeksandwillleaveafoulsmelloneverythingitcomesincontactwith.Forthatreason,dieselfuelisnotrecommendedforuse
unlessthatisallthat'savailable.MarvelMysteryOil,PBBlaster,orevenkerosene/ATFmixedtogetherareallacceptable.WD40orkerosene
mayworkbutarenotaseffectiveassomeoftheothersfluidsmentioned.DONOTusegasolineorotherhighlyflammablesolventsastheydo
notprovideanylubricity,plustheyarearespiratoryandfirehazard.
Note:Someyearsago,amachinist'smagazinedidacontrolledstudyonpenetratingoils(https://duckduckgo.com/?
q=machinist+magazine+penetrating+oil),andfoundthatATFmixed50/50withacetoneoutperformedallotherpenetratingoilsbyawide
margin.Beawarethatcautionshouldbeusedwhenmixingorapplyingacetonecontainingmixtures.Acetoneishighlyflammable,especiallyso
whensuspendedinairandshouldbehandledwithcare.Acetoneisalsoaninhalationhazard.

Useplentyofpenetrantineachsparkplugholeandallowtositforafewhours.Whilethat'sworking,(iftheengineisinavehicle)backoffon
thefanbelts,removetheaircleanerandvalvecovers.Chargeupthebattery,cleanthecablesandmakesureallelectricalconnectionsaretight.
Removethefanshroudifthereisone.Getalongbreakerbarwiththeappropriatesocketforthefrontpulleybolt.Removethecoilwirefrom
thedistributor/coil.Getsomehelpifyouthinkyouneedit.

Breakingtheengineloose
Note:Usingabreakerbartoturnafrozenengineoverbythecrankshaftboltisnotrecommended.Theacceptablemethodinvolvesturning
theenginefromtheflexplate/flywheel,orbyusingacrankshaftsocketthatfitsoverthesnoutofthecrankorboltstothedamper.Exceedingthe
torqueratingofthecrankboltcanandwillsnapitoff,costingalotoftimeandtroubletofix.
Belowarethreetoolsthatcanmaketurningtheengineoveramuchsaferoperationthanusingthecrankbolt.
WiththesparkplugsoutoftheengineandaFULLYchargedbattery,givethestarteraonesecondclickandthenstop.Observeasyoudothisif
thefanorcrankpulleyhasmovedslightly,ifthevalveshavemoved,andifthestarterisfullyengagingintotheflywheel.Takethebreakerbar
andturnthecrankpulleybackabitandthenhitthestarterbuttonagaintoputsometorqueontheflywheel.Thistorquemultiplicationwill
movethecrankjournaladegreeortwoandwillpushorpullonthepistonwhichinturnwillapplythrustagainsttherings.Allyouhavetodo
forthemomentiscracktheringslooseathousandthofaninchtoallowthepenetratingoiltogetinbetweentheringsandcylinderwalls.
Afterallowingthepenetranttosettleinforafewminutestoovernight,trytoturnthecrankinthereversedirectionofrotation(CCWasyou
facetheenginelookingtowardsthedistributor)toremovethetensionontherings.Thepenetrantbetweentheringandthewallwilleventually
breaktheringfreefromthecylinderwall.Itmaytakeadozenorsotriesbeforeallofthestuckringsandbearingsarefreebutwitheach
successivetrymorefluidwillfillthevoidsuntiltheengineisfreetoturn.Allowtheenginetomaketwoorthreerevolutionsbeforestoppingthe
exercise.Thiswillallowtheexcesspenetrationoiltoevacuateitselffromthecombustionchambersandforsomeoftheoilinthecrankcaseto
moveinthesystem.Theenginewillnowhaveanewplacetorestwhilethelubricationseepsintothesurfacesoftheinternals.
ManyyearsagothewriterboughtaCommervanwithastuckengine.Thepooraftermarketignitionwiring(thevanoriginallyhadadiesel
engine)hadcausedtheenginetoquit.ThevehiclehadbeenidleforoverayearjudgingbyitstaxdiscsoPlusGaswasintroducedintotheplug
holesdailyforoveraweek.Tryingtoforcethestartinghandlestrippedthethreadonthealuminumalloyjawnutsothatmethodofattackhad
failed.Fortunatelythedefectivealloyparthadbeendiscontinuedandreplacedwithasteelpartsothenewpartwasboughtandfitted.
Unfortunatelyevenwhenthestartinghandlehadtimbersclampedonitforextraleveragetheenginecouldstillnotbeturned!Atthispointthe
startermotorwastriedbutthebatterywastooweak.Anewheavydutybatterywaspurchasedandthissucceededinfreeingtheengineonthe
thirdimpact(thecurrentdrawwassohighthattheearthbraidsmoked!)TheenginethenfiredupandranOKandatthispointtheastonished
sellerrushedoutandsaid"Areyouanelectricianorsomething?"Itwasagreatvanandbasicallyallitneededwastwoweeksofsoakingwith
releasingfluid,anewbatteryandsomeattentiontotheignitioncircuit.Enginesfromboatswhichhavesunkaremuchmoredifficult.
Whenpistonsarestuckreallyhard,heat,thewoodblockandthesledgehammermayallfail.Alsonotethatstrikingthecrownofthepistonisa
verybadideasoonesoakblockshouldberelievedinthemiddle.Ifpossibleobtainsomethickwalledsteelpipeandmachineittobea
clearancefitinthebore.Pressurecannowbeappliedtotheedgeofthepistonwhereitisneeded.Ifsomeallthreadcanbeobtainedthatwillfit
thestudholesintheblockahydraulicjackcanberiggedupbutthekeyingredientisTIME.Forexamplethewriterwasprivilegedtobeshown
aseizedvintageoilenginethatwasaboutahundredyearsold.Itsownerhadbeensoakingthepistonwithreddieselforayearhoweverhesaid
thathewouldnotbedoinganyworkontheengineuntilthepistonhadbeensoakedforanotherTHREEYEARSbutnotmanypeoplehaveso
muchpatience.Inanycaseonealsoneedstoconsiderthethreescoreandtenaspectwhenundertakingsuchlengthytasks.
Plumberssupplierssellpipefreezingkits(BPoftheFreonreplacement50C)soitisfairlyeasytofreezeapistontotrytounstickitfromits
bore.LiquidNitrogenisbetter(BP196C)butitsnotsoeasytoobtain.Dryiceorevenacarbondioxidefireextinguisherarealsoveryeffective
increatingsubzerotemperatures(BP57C).Propanewhichiseasytoobtainboilsat42degreesCbutthereisthefirehazardtoconsider.

JustusedallmethodsaboveandfreedupMercruiser200thatsatfor2yearswithoildrainpugremovedandwaterfillinguptheoilpan.Mix1
partMMO,1partWD40Specialist,1partPBBlasterand1partATFthecheapstuffworksjustfineasyouwillbedraining.Removespark
plugsandspraySeaFoamDeepCreep[onecanoneachsideofblock]intocylindersandletsitfor12days.WithProformsEnginerotation
adapterp/n66782orsimilarremovethepulleysandinstalladaptertofrontofharmonicbalancer,attempttoturncrankinsmallincrements.Fill
cylindersagainandreinsertplugs.Wait12daysandrepeat,thistime,filltheenginewiththe5galmixpostedabove.Continuetoturncrankin
smallincrements.Minemovedabout1/8".ContinuethecylindersprayalternatingPBblasterandSeaFoamDeepcreep.After2weeks,topof
enginewith4quartsof1540hdoil.Continuetoturncrank.Mineletgotonightafter2weeksofthistreatment,greatfeeling.Besuretotap
crankasmentionedinthisarticlewithlongitudinalforce,thisseemedtobewhatcauseditto"letgo".Noteusethe1"socketontheEngine
rotationadapteroryouwillbreakthetoolfromforceontheinternal1/2"drivecutoutwhiletryingtobreaktheenginefree.Goodluckandthe
hardestpart,HAVEPATIENCE

Aftertheenginehasbrokenloose
Nowthatyouhavebrokentheengineloose,oneofthefirstthingstodoischangetheoil.Thiswillgetridofmostofthedirt,acids,and
penetratingfluid.Pullthedrainplug,removethefilterandletitdrain.Refillwithcleanmotoroilandinstallanewfilter.

Engineflushing
Note:Thereisquiteabitofcontroversyregardingusingvariousmethodstoflush/cleananenginethat'sbeenneglected.Oneschoolof
thoughtisthatit'sbettertoleaveitbe,iftheenginecannotbetakenapartforathoroughcleaning.Anenginethat'shadregularroutineoiland
filterchangeswillberelativelycleaninside.Usingaflushtocleanitoutwon'taccomplishmuchexcepttoloosenwhatthereisintherealready.
Oncethecrudissoftenedup,itcantakealongtimetoeverberemovedtotally.Itcantakeseveraloilchangestobringtheenginebacktoastate
wheretheoilandfilterisn'timmediatelycontaminatedwiththelooseneddirt.Beyondthat,theremaybenodamagedone.
Thedecisiontoflushtheenginewillbeleftuptothepersonpayingthebills.Itisstronglyrecommendedtoresearchthisfullybefore
undertakingtheprocedure.
Thefollowingisoneofmanymethodsforflushinganengine:
Addagallonorsoofdieselfuelandanewfilter,andturnitoverwiththestarterforaminuteorso.You'llbeturningitoverwithout
sparkplugs,sowatchforspraycomingoutoftheplugholes.Itwillturnmuchfasterandbuildupsomeoilpressurewhilecleaningout
theoilgalleysandinternals.Youcancyclethroughafewtimesifyouwant.
Useacommercialengineflush,followingthedirections.
Fill(fullyorhalfandhalf,etc.)withATFandruntheengine.

Aftertheengineisfreedup
Younowhavetomakeachoice:runtheengineasis,orpulltheheadsandpantocheckfordamages.Ifyou'regoingtodoacompressiontestor
aleakdowntest,drainandrefillwithnewoil.Circulatethenewoilthroughouttheoilgalleriesbycrankingtheenginetopurgethedieselfuel,
andthenstarttheenginetowarmitupandburnoffsomeofthedieselfuelintheengine.Inmostcasesyoushouldgotheoverhaulroute
(http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/How_to_rebuild_an_engine),checkingforwear,mic'ingouttheboresandclearancesofbearings,
etc.
Iftheengineisalltogetheryoumayhavesuccessbyrunninghotwaterthroughtheengine.ThistakesHOTwater,180degreeorso.Remove
thethermostatandattachyourhosestoyourheatingunitandpumpthehotwaterthruthecoolingsystem.Mostfrozenenginesarecausedby
ringsbeingstucktocylinderwalls.Thetheoryhereistheheatwillexpandsthecastironblockfasterthanthepistonstheextraclearancethis
createsgivesthepenetratingoilabetterchanceatreachingthestuckareasaswellasmaybreakanybondsformedbyrust/corrosion.Onewayis
touseahomemadeoilburnerwaterheatersystemwithapump.Ifpossibleusethestartertobudgeitasyoupumpthehotwater.

Unstickingthe"impossible"
Thebasicsofunstickinganyenginearethesame.Fillitupwithafluidthatwillpenetrateandlubricatethestucksurfaces.Removeorloosen
anyaccessoriesthatmaybefrozenupandcausingtheenginetobehardertoturnover.Usuallyjustlooseningthebeltswillhelpwiththis.
Startbyturningthecrank,evenasmallamountwillovertimeandwithrepetitioncauseittobreakloose.Oritwilltellyouthattheengineis
wellandtrulyfrozenupandneedstobedisassembledforaproperrebuild.Evenadegreeofmovementorathousandthsofaninchisastartin
movingtheengine'sreciprocatingassembly.Allowtimeforthepenetranttoworkanddon'tgetimpatient.

Usingpenetratingfluids
Usingafluidthatwillpenetrateandlubricateiskey.Youneedsomethingthatwillpenetrate,staywet,andwickitswayupintothesmallest
area.Ordinarymotoroilwillcoatbutpenetratesataveryslowpace.Petroleumormineralspiritswillgetintosmallplacesbutwilldryoutover
time.Paraffinwillwickitswayupordownathreadedbolt,butonlywhenitismelted.Acidswilleattheirwaythroughbutcancausedamage

ofitsownandmaybehardtocontrolaswellasdangeroustohandle.Causticsaremoreofaslowburnandmayrequireheattoworkbetter,and
areoftenharmfultoaluminum/aluminumalloys.Waterwillpenetrate,wet,andcoatbuthasmanylimitations.Dieselfuelisamiddleofthe
roadfluidthatwillcreep,coatandstaywetovertimebutreekstohighhellandwillstinkupeverythingitcontactsyouincluded.Ifyou're
feelingadventurous,youcanmixupyourownsolution(WD40did).OrjustspendafewbucksonalargecanofMarvelMysteryoil,WD40,
orPBBlaster.
Knowwhatmetalthatyouareworkingwithandapplythecorrectsolutiontogetthebestresult.Mostmetalswillformwhatisknownasan
oxide,whereoxygenfromtheairmixesonthesurfacewiththebasemetal.Wedoknowthatwhentheseoxidesdryouttheyareusuallyhardto
removebyanymeansotherthanmechanical(sandingorwirebrush/wheel,sand/beadblasting).
Weknowthatsteelorironwillrust.Aluminumwillformawhitepowderyresidue(aluminumoxide,oraluminum'rust)andmayformadark
greytoalmostblackcoatingcausedbytheoxidationofthemetal.Brassandcopperwillbecoveredwithagreencorrosion.Eachconditionwill
requireadifferentapproachinmostcases.
Heatisanexcellenttoolforunstickingthings,butonlywhenusedinmoderation.Wouldhittingastuckpistonhelpittomove?Theansweris,
yesandno.Ifyouapplyenoughforceintheproperdirection,yesitwouldhelp.Ifyoujustwoundupandsmackeditdeadcenterwithaball
peenhammer,youwouldprobablyjustputaholeinitanditwouldstillremainstuck.Thebetterwaytoapproachthiswhenyouhaveastuck
enginewouldbethisway:
Determinewhatisstuck.Isitthepiston(s),thecrank,thecamandvalvetrain,therods,oracombinationofallthese?
Breaktheenginedownuntilyoufindthatpartorcombinationofparts.
Itwouldbeahellofawasteifwejustgaveuponanenginejustbecauseitwouldn'tturnover.Howaboutturningitback?Couldwehave
justdroppedavalveonthepistonandit'sstuckthere?
Removenonessentialaccessoriesthataren'trequiredtomaketheenginerotate.Thatmeansthatyoucanloosenthebeltsorremovethe
alternator,waterpump,intakeandexhaustmanifolds,distributor,heads,oilpan,etc.Getitdowntowhereyoucanhaveagoodlook
aroundandseewheretheproblemarealies.
Keeptheengineinasecureholdingdevice.Ifit'stheframeofthecarortruck,that'sgood.Iftheengineisloose,findawaytoholdit
down.Remember,thetensilestrengthofsteelisgreaterthanwood.Andifoneboltisgood,ahalfadozenwouldbebetter.Ifusingan
enginestand,usecautionthatitdoesn'ttip.Alightdutythreewheeledenginestandwon'tdoitifalongbreakerbarisgoingtobeusedto
turnthecrank.
Floodtheengineblockwiththefluidofyourchoice.Turnitupsidedownandfilltheblock,andplugholesasnecessary.Thisisjusta
prelubestage.
Usinganoakblockandadeadblowhammerofyourchoice,SHOCKeachpistonwithafewblows.Anairchiselwithaflatbitandan
oakblocklikethemushroomendofanaxehandleworkswell.Rememberyouarejusttryingtoloosentherings,NOTmovethepiston.
Justletthebitvibratetheoakblockandpiston.Whentheringsbreakfreeyouwillseeyourluberunpastthemintotheblock.Anypiston
whichisatTDCorBDCwillnotgiveyouanymechanicaladvantageinrotatingtheassemblybyhittingit.Theinitialstrikeistojust
loosentheringsinthepistonlandsandbreaktheringsfreefromthewallsofthecylinder.PistonsthatareinbetweenTDCandBDCwill
providethebestopportunitytomovewithinthebore.
Therearetwoplacesinwhichyoucanapplyrotationalforcethecrankpulleyandtheflywheel.Usewhicheverisaccessiblewiththe
leasteffort.Donotusepulleysortheoutsideringofbalancerstoturnovertheengineifatallpossible.Don'tusethebalancerbolt,either.
Damper/balancerscanbedamagedandthedamperboltwillstripifexcessivetorqueisapplied.Instead,thesafest/easiestwaytoturnthe
crankistouseatoolthatallowsalargeratchetorbreakerbartobeused,likethecrankturningdevicesshownbelow.Bothsocketsthat
usethecrankkey,andadaptersthatbolttotheinnerhubofthedamperaremadeforturningthecrank.Crankkeysandkeywayscanshear
withabnormalforce.Besureoftheboltgradesbeforeapplyingforce.RemembertotrytorockthecrankCWandCCW.

Don'tforgettouselongitudinalforceonthecrankshaft.Tapthecrankshaftatbothendswithyourdeadblowhammerandoakblock,like
youweregoingtomeasurethecrankendfloat.Loosentherodbearingcapsandtapwithabronzehammertobreakthebearingsloose.
Afteryou'vedonealloftheabove,letitsoakandthenstartoveragain.

fullofgreaseusingagreasegunfilledwithcheaplightweightgrease(likeLubriplatewhitegrease).Oncethemotorbreaksfreeyoucanrotate
themotortosqueezemostofthegreaseoutofthesparkplughole.
AnotherapproachistoputsomeMarvelMysteryOil,WD40orPBBlasterintoeachcylinderandthenpressurizewithcompressedair.On
cylindersthatarenotundercompression,thecompressedairwilldistributethepenetratingoil.Withthecylinderundercompression,the
compressedairwillacttorotatetheenginewhiledrivingthepenetratingoilpasttherings.
TherearetalesofCokebeingusedtoloosenastuckengine.PresumablythishassomethingtodowiththesmallacidcontentofCoke.Tryitif
youwantto.
Warning:Usegoodeyeprotection.Blowcompressedairintoallthecylinderstocoatthecylindersandpistontopswiththepenetrant.Give
itacoupleminutes/hours/dayssoitcanworkontherust.Afterwards,screwinthecompressedairadapterandchargeeachcylinderwithfiftyor
sopsi.Ithelpsifyoucompletelyloosentherockersfirstsoanycylinderyouchargehasthevalvesclosed.Ifitdoesn'tturnoveratfiftypsiit's
notready.Applymoreoilandwait.It'stimeconsumingandmaybeabitofwork,buttheobjectistoSAVEtheengine.

Unstickinganengineinamanualtransmissionvehicle
Successcanbeattainedinunstickinganengineinvehiclesequippedwithamanualtransmissiononanumberofoccasionsbyusingthepre
soakingmethodsmentionedabove.
Oncetheenginehassoaked,jackuponedrivewheel,putthetransmissioninhighgearandworkthewheelbackandforth.
Ifyouhaveafriendtohelpyoucanskipjackingupthewheel,putthevehicleinlowgear,positionyourselvesoneachendofthevehicleand
rockthevehiclebackandforth.Thiscantakequiteawhileanditisquitetiringbutyouwillnoticethewheelwillstarttomovealittlefartherif
theprocessisgoingtosucceed.
Oncethedrivewheelrotatesseveralrevolutions,pullthevehicleinhighgearseveralmileswithalltheplugsremoved.Thisisprobablynot
necessarybutitgetseverythingwelllubricated.
