From the Pastor

Yes, I continue to watch the Olympics... As I was watching the races, I

saw one of the runners who had a necklace with a cross as the point of
interest. There is no way of knowing if this runner is a person of faith, but
I would imagine that if they are wearing this particular sign of faith then
there must be some connection to a life based on the Christian values that
the cross would signify for us. We remember that the cross is not a piece of
jewelry even though it is accepted as something to profess what we believe
openly. If we decide to use a necklace with the cross, may it be a reminder
of the faith that we hope to live as a visible sign just as the cross is visible to
those who see us. Neither the Cross nor the rosary should be worn as a
mere fashion statement. The use of these 'sacramentals' has been openly
used by celebrities and now everyday people in a blasphemous and
sacrilegious way. Of course I do not discourage anyone from wearing a
symbol of our faith; the one who chooses to wear a cross is hopefully
thinking of their spiritual life throughout the day. The person who is
considering the possibility of wearing a cross or rosary should ask what
their motive would be for making the cross visible as part of their person.
They will also need to be ready if someone asks why they are wearing the
cross. The wearing of the cross can be an opportunity to open up a
conversation about faith and hope in the God who loves us.
We know that the cross is one of the main symbols of our
faith, that is why people who believe choose to wear it.
May those who wear the cross know the significance of
the symbol and may those who see it be reminded of
the God who created us and continues to love us more
than we know.

MARCELS LAST ARTICLE

The Catholic Church is speaking to us. When the world goes
wrong, it's the Catholic Church that preaches against its
nonsense (abortion, supporting laws that protect religious
liberties). When loose religious thinkers, so-called experts,
teach error, the Church calls them to task (gay marriage). The
Church, like Christ, is dedicated to the Truth. Religion must
comfort people amidst the loneliness, cruelty, stupidity, and
unpredictability of life. Christ did this. The Church does this.
Cardinal Newman said, "From the time I entered the Church,
I've had no anxiety. I have been at peace with myself. It was
like coming to port after a rough sea. My happiness remains."
A former student at Colgan High, recently returned to the
Sacraments and expressed to me in a letter the 'peace and
contentment' that she felt immediately after. I'm bothered
when Catholics talk about their Church as if it were just
another man-made organization. Jesus was both God and
man. He was killed for claiming to be God's Son. Our Church,
which Jesus founded, suffers from the same cause. Some folks
forget that the Church follows Jesus' plan to teach His Gospel
to all nations and that Pope Francis continues, in an unbroken
line from St.Peter to do just that! Sure, the Church has
imperfections, but that is because humans run its day-to-day
operations. As Andrew Greeley has said: "If you can find a
Church that is perfect, by all means, join it, but realize that
when you do, it has ceased to be perfect!"
PERSONAL NOTE: This will be my last article for the
church bulletin. Helen and I hope to sell our home and move
nearer to our sons and families. I find there is more to do for
this move than I anticipated and my help at home is needed. I
have enjoyed writing these past four years and I thank you for
having received me so favorably. - Marcel Normand
