FromFig.4itisseenthatanincreaseintheamountofthenodulargraphitecausesanincreaseinboth

4.Conclusions
Thesensitivityofultrasonicvelocityandapparentattenuationagainstthechangesinthenodulargraphite
contentallowsgradingofnodularcastirons.Itisalsopossibletodetectlocalunnodularizedzonesinthe
castings.Inthespecimenshavinghighamountofnodulargraphite,thelongitudinalwavepropagatesfaster.
ThedifferencesindensityandPoisson'sratioamongthespecimensarenegligible,then,themainreasonfor
thevelocitychangeisthemodulusofelasticity.Variationintheamountofnodulargraphitealsoaffectsthe
soundattenuation.Whenthenodulargraphitecontentdecreases,theattenuationincreasesduetotheincreased
scatteringeffectofthenonsphericalgraphites.Thematrixphasesalsoaffectthemechanicalproperties,
however,thisinfluencecouldnotbeendetectedbyvelocitymeasurements.Althoughapparentattenuation
measurementsaremoresensitive,thereliableutilisationofitrequiresfurtherresearch.Whenthematrix
phasesareknown,ultrasonicmeasurementscanbeusedfordetermininggraphitemorphologythatisalsoan
indicatorofthestrengthproperties.Ifparallelsurfacesexistandsidewalleffectisnegligible,these
