Installing WSUS

Overview

In this exercise, you will use Server Manager to install WSUS.

Because this is a test environment, you use the standard internal
database that comes with Windows.

Mindset

When planning WSUS, you should consider the number of clients,

number of updates, location of the clients, bandwidth links between
the clients and the WSUS server, and available disk space. If you
have multiple sites, you might consider installing multiple WSUS
servers within your organization so that you can preserve WAN
bandwidth. You can then consider using a WSUS architecture.

Exercise 2.2

Configuring WSUS

Overview

After you install WSUS, you must configure WSUS so that it

retrieves updates from Microsoft or another WSUS server. You also
need to configure WSUS on what updates need to be downloaded
and when the downloads should occur.

Mindset

After the WSUS server has been installed, it must be configured so

that it knows where to get the updates from and what to download.
If your office or school uses a proxy server to access the Internet,
you will need to input the proxy settings so that WSUS can get to
the Internet and Microsofts websites. This would include
specifying the name or IP address for the actual server or device
and the appropriate port that all Internet traffic must flow through
to reach the Internet.

Exercise 2.3

Configuring Clients

Overview

For a client to get updates from a WSUS, the client has to be

configured to get updates from WSUS. Therefore, during this
exercise, you will use group policies to configure Server02 to get
updates from Server01.

Mindset

You have hundreds of clients that need to get Windows updates.

Rather than configure each computer one-by-one, what would be
the easiest way to configure all of the computers so that the
computers will get the Windows updates that you specify?

Approving Updates

Overview

The WSUS server has been configured and you have a client that is
ready to get updates from the WSUS server. In this exercise, you
will approve what updates need to be pushed.

Mindset

You have just configured the WSUS server has been configured and
the clients have been configured to get updates from the WSUS
server. Before you approve updates, You should research what an
update will do and then test the update thoroughly so that it does
not cause problems within your network.
