Culture and Heritage Day

The School Council is organising a Culture and Heritage
Day on Wednesday 24 August. Children will be asked to
share something about their culture / family origins and
will help us to build a picture of the rich diversity that makes up our
country. They will have time to share their special item or taonga
(could be knowledge), to locate where their forebears came from, and
to help us compile data. Children can wear national costumes if they
like, or bring some national food to share but these are absolutely
not an expectation. Parents are asked to help by
. talking to their children about where their ancestors come from.
... helping them find something to share (could be a special item, a
photograph or even a special story)
spending some time with them this weekend adding some details to
their family tree (attached). The tree goes back to great
grandparents but please take it back as far as a place of origin
might be home marae and/or country(ies) of origin ... dont
worry if details are missing, just add what you know, Thanks!!!!

Olympic Reading Challenge

Last week we launched an Olympic themed reading challenge. The main aim is to increase reading mileage, i.e.
the amount of time children spend reading, and to get children buzzing about the books they read. This year
children will be spectators at the Olympics and will go to see as many different sports as they can. They will
have to read for an hour (or 10 books for some juniors) to get to the next event. They will also get house
points for their reading miles and other recognition for their efforts at the end of the term.
We ask parents to assist by:
Providing a reading time, before bed or other.

Helping keep a track of reading on the reading log.

Helping them to select appropriate reading material at their level. This may be from home, from our
library or selected from the public library, borrowed from friends etc.

Encouraging children to read more.

Being a role model, reading at the same time they do.

Please contact your childs teacher if you have any queries. Thank you for your help. HAVE FUN!
Reminders
please check at home for junior readers, under beds, behind furniture etc, and send these along to school
on Monday .. no questions asked!
please continue your efforts at home on the TRUSTWORTHINESS VIRTUE.
a reminder that the board ahs decided the school will not receive out of zone enrolemnts in 2017 for
children with no existing connection with the school (however a limted number of places will be made
available at year 7 and 8)
Youth Summit
A reminder that all year 6 to 8 children will be attending the Youth Summit at Kensington Stadium on Friday
26 August, there will be no regular classes for them on this day. A number of consent forms are outstanding
and so please get these to school on Monday. Any question in the run up please to Mrs Donaldson.
Year 4 and 5 Hockey Festival
takes place 23 August Children are required to bring their Matarau T-shirts, warm clothing, suitable
foot wear, mouth and shin guards if you have these, and spending money at your discretion. Any questions
(or if able to assist) please contact Mr Schuster.
Daffodil Day 26th August 2016
Matarau School will be collecting donations (gold coin) for the Cancer Society. We
havent been able to secure any daffodils this year, but have stickers & tattoos if
you or your child would like to receive one of these to wear or take home, please bring
money to the office before Friday next week. Thank you.
Interschool Cross Country 30 August
Consents were issued this week to qualifying children. Please return these asap so we can confirm entry.
Also, we would love a couple of volunteers to help co-ordinate our runners. If you think you might be able to
help please give Brenda in our school office a call. Parents are reminded that they are responsible for
transporting and supervising their own children on the day, or for transferring these responsibilities to
another attending parent.
Home Gardens
If your child did not bring home a Home Garden Consent this week and you would like them to participate in
this programme, please contact the school office. Early thought could be given to the location and layout of
the garden, compost etc. More to follow.
Central Northland Science and Technology Fair
Parents of children who will represent/possibly represent our school are advised that the Central Northland
Fair will take place 29 August to 1 September. Parents of participating children will have been advised this
week. Any questions in the run up to the Regional to Mrs Donaldson please.
We would also like to confirm that Science Fair Boards of those students participating in the Central
Northland Science Fair may be collected from school from next Tuesday 23rd August. Please ensure you also

have their logbooks and any display items for their exhibit. Mrs Donaldson and Mr Le Breton will email with
suggestions that could improve the exhibits. These are suggestions only, should you wish to carry these out.
Miranda Pol will be the staff member in charge at the CNSF on Monday 29th August, if you have any
questions on the day please address these to her. Miranda will text you in the event of your child being
ready to be collected before 3pm if you have indicated this on your child's permission form, otherwise all
students must be collected from Miranda at 3pm. Congratulations again on your child making it through to
represent our school at this event. We are very proud of their achievements.
School Assembly Time
Please note that for the remainder of the term the school assembly will be held on every 2nd Monday at 12noon,
not 2.30pm as usual. Whole school assemblies are held on the even weeks of terms
Science Fair Visit 30 August
Please note that year 6 to 8 children will also visit the Regional Science and Technology Fair on the
afternoon of Tuesday 30 August. Please get consents to school as soon as possible.
Calf Club Day Thursday 20 October 2016
If you havent already, you need to start thinking now if your child/ren want to rear
calves, lambs or goats. The animal must be born after 1st July 2016. Calves are
judged on rearing and leading. Lambs are judged on rearing, leading & calling. Goats
are judged on rearing, leading & calling.
You can also bring a pet which can include rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, chicken etc. Note that NO DOGS or
PUPPIES are permitted and the animal will need to be in a cage for the duration of the day.
Please do not bring pregnant animals or new-borns on the day as this could put them
under stress that would not be good for their health. Also please make sure you bring
along food and water for your animals as it can be a long day for them especially if it is
sunny and hot.
More information will be sent home closer to the end of the term.
Term contributions
please respond to contribution request notices if you receive one. Thank you for your support ... every
cent goes back to the children in some value added form.
National Random Act of Kindness Day
coming up Thursday 1 September watch this space!
Cosmic Shield / Star Wars Cards
Quite a number of children are bringing these cards to school. We know from prior experience that these
cards can easily go missing or cause arguments. We would like to request please that cards are left at home
unless arranged with your childs teacher.
International Schools Competitions
Please return exam practice papers to school at your earliest convenience. It is a rule of the competition
that these papers are returned to school. This also enables us to make papers available free of charge to
families in future years.
If planning time away from school for your children
.. please arrange this for term break where possible. If this is not possible (we do understand) please email
the school with a formal request for exemption from school stating grounds (e.g. family, educational etc.)
Finally
Preparation for our school production is gathering momentum. Not only are school productions an
opportunity to teach the fine and performing arts, they are also an opportunity to study all the elements of
story in ways that are truly authentic and memorable. Children study plot, character, setting, dialogue,
visual language and dramatic technique. They sing individually, and in concert, and understand what it means
to reach deadlines and to work as a team. Because all this happens in the context of something much bigger
than any of them individually, and because they actually get to share it with audiences, the learning value is

hugely greater than learning from a text book. But perhaps most of all, school productions are an
opportunity to find hidden talents, spark new passions and simply to have some fun together.
See you there!
Regards nga mihi

After $2.5 million donated to the Starship Foundation from the sale of unwanted old mobile
phones it is time for a new multi award winning NZ charity - Sustainable Coastline to
benefit from this scheme. It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers
and toy boxes and bring into School any unwanted mobile phones you may have.
Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits
by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances. Please
drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the Office at School.
