Assignment 1: Applications of Data Management & Analytics

Please refer to the PPT slides of Module 1. Choose any ONE application scenario described in those
slides and write a two-page report. Your report should be divided into the following sections:
1. Description of the application: Here, you need to describe the application at a high-level and
include some information concerning how this application adds value to one or more stakeholders.
2. A broad survey of the application: You need to identify any 7-10 relevant websites/links which
discuss this application in some detail. Please choose only reputable/trusted websites. In your
assignment report, you need to clearly list those 7-10 websites. And you will write a few paragraphs
summarizing the information as well as insights that you gained by going through the material in the
7-10 websites/links.
3. Innovation: Here, you should write a few paragraphs describing what kind of innovation you would
like to propose on the given application. Please try to think out-of-the-box and focus on applying the
knowledge that you have gained from the material in Module 1 to propose improvements to the
existing application.
Please note the following points:
1. Your assignment report should have a title in 14-point Times New Roman font.
2. Please write your name and Roll Number just below the title.
3. The text of the report should be in 12-point Times Roman font with single spacing.
4. The total page limit is two pages.
5. The grading criteria for this assignment will be based on effort, presentation and
innovation/novelty. Please write in a concise manner because your grades will depend on the
content, not on the amount of text which you write.
6. The assignment report should be submitted as a PDF file.
7. Any act of plagiarism will result in a zero for the entire assignment. Hence, please avoid any form
of plagiarism.
8. This assignment is open-ended and is designed to make you think deep and develop insights
about data management and analytics in a given application scenario. Hence, please keep your focus
on applying what you have learned from the lecture classes. This also implies that you need to first
go through the lecture slides thoroughly before you start working on the assignment.
9. This is an individual assignment, hence please do NOT collaborate with your fellow students
towards the completion of this assignment.
This assignment carries 25 points.
The deadline for the submission of this assignment is April 7, 2016 at 3 pm. This is a hard deadline
and no deadline extensions will be provided unless there are any extenuating circumstances.
