Introduction

1 Introduction
The following sections describe how to manually adjust the volume settings on Nokia
phones. You need to perform this adjustment to obtain consistent results in the downlink
connection of voice tests.
You do not need to manually adjust the volume on Android smartphones. Smartphones
have an internal level adjustment element that does not require manual interaction.
The volume of the earpiece of the downlink receiver directly influences the audio level
that the analogue-digital converter of the measurement device receives. The measurement device applies a constant gain to the volume of the uplink direction; the uplink volume does not require a manual adjustment.

2 Volume Settings
This section describes how to manually set the volume settings on a Nokia phone.
The volume settings were evaluated in a normal ISDN-to-Mobile connection, where a
gain of at least 0 dB in the audio channel is expected. Some mobile service providers
use self-defined audio levels, mainly amplification in the downlink, which can lead to
channel gains of more than 0 dB (usually 36dB) in mobile-to-mobile connections. Such
amplifications and possible saturations of the signal that can result are part of the system
under test conditions. In such cases, the volume setting remains unchanged. Furthermore, a reduction in the level of the earpiece volume does not remove saturation that
occurs on the network.
You can only adjust the volume during an active call.

To manually adjust the volume of a Nokia phone

1. Make a call with the phone.
2. Raise the volume to the maximum level.
For the location of the volume control on your phone model see
Note: The volume adjustment bar might be hidden if the phone is on the receiving
end of a call.
3. Lower the volume by the number of bars that specifies for your phone model.
Although the phone stores the volume level, you might need to readjust the level if
the phone has been off for a long period of time.
Tip: For best results, set the volume during the configuration call so that the volume
remains unchanged during the measurement.

* Nokia C5 and C7 phones support the AMR-WB codec. When this codec is in use, the
audio profile significantly increases the volume of the phones, which can lead to amplitude clipping in the analogue circuits and the analogue-digital conversion. In a network
that supports AMR-WB, you need to lower the maximum audio volume by four bars. This
change also affects AMR in NB mode, but does not influence the MOS as the quality
prediction algorithm re-aligns the level automatically.
