Drug drop box makes debut

Moorestown police implement new 24/7 drop box in department lobby
for residents to safely dispose of expired, unwanted or unused drugs

Newsweek releases top

500 best high schools
in country, naming
Moorestown No. 112

By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
After the state attorney generals office initiative called Project
Medicine Drop first arose with a
pilot program in November 2011,
residents of the state were provided an outlet by which they
could anonymously drop off unwanted
prescription
drugs.
Adopting this idea, Moorestown
announced on Tuesday, Aug. 16
that it has installed a box of its
own at police headquarters.
Situated in the police departments lobby, located at 1245 N.
Church St., Suite 3, the box can
be used to dispose of drugs that
are either expired, unwanted or
unused. This effort to fight
against nationwide opiate and
heroin abuse also seeks to help
protect the environment by keeping these drugs out of landfills
and the water supply and ultimately to continue to make
Moorestown a safer, healthier
and stronger community.
We have been participating
in the medicine turn-in program
since its inception originally
hosted by the Drug Enforcement
Administration. We always had a
very good turnout from our residents and from neighboring

Each year Newsweek, a news

magazine and website, releases a
list of the top 500 best high
schools in the country. Upon the
release of the 2016 list on Aug. 11,
Moorestown High School was
ranked No. 112 nationally.
I am thrilled to see that the
hard work of our students, staff,
families and the entire educational community in Moorestown is
being recognized, Moorestowns
new Superintendent Scott McCartney said. It is that desire for
excellence and commitment to a
high quality education that
brings many to our community
and certainly what brought me
here as well. I look forward to
working with our professionals
and the community to see how we
can sustain that quality and continue to grow as leaders in this
critical work.

Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The Department of Parks and
Recreation has always been an advocate of service and volunteerism. Promoting service to the
community, youth, families and
individuals who utilize its programs is part of its mantra. Service is the cornerstone to any
strong community and the
Moorestown community certainly puts service at the top of its priority list. Service comes in many
forms, and one of the areas in
which the department encourages service is in the form of vol-

unteer coaches as part of youth

recreation leagues.
Volunteer coaches are essential
to the success of the recreation
youth sports leagues.
These
leagues are essential to the
growth and development, both
physically and mentally, of our
young people. The goal of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to provide recreational
opportunities for students, families, individuals and seniors
through affordable and accessible
programs.
Volunteer coaches make these
leagues possible. What better way
to engage in community service

than to volunteer two hours each

week to coach young people who
just want to play. With more
pressures being placed on students, and more constraints being
placed on school districts, the Department of Parks and Recreation, now more than ever, is committed to providing these programs to every member of our
community.
So for those individuals who
say, I cant coach Ive never
played [this sport], I have news
for you anyone can coach. Anyone who enjoys spending time

adopted a measure earlier this
month that will require high
school students to pass the infamous
PARCC tests in English and math to
graduate high school.
While the controversial PARCC tests
have been administered for two years
now, they havent meant much to students futures. Starting with the class
of 2021, which will enter eighth grade
this fall, passing the Algebra I and
10th-grade English part of the test will
be a requirement to receive a high
school diploma.
PARCC has been a highly controversial standardized test since it was first
put into effect two years ago. Opponents feel, among numerous other
things, that the test is too hard, that
its too tough for kids to take entirely
on a computer and that it bucks the
nationwide trend of moving away
from standardized testing in general.
In the last four years, the number of
states that require students to pass an

exit exam for graduation has been reduced almost in half from 25 in 2012
to 15 currently. Concerns range from
low passing rates preventing a large
number of students from graduating
to simply too much testing.
New Jersey, though, feels differently.
State Education Commissioner David
Hespe says the 2021 effective date of
PARCC as a graduation requirement
will give school districts and students
enough time to adjust to the new test
and improve upon their scores.
Lets hope hes right on that last
point, as only 41 percent of test takers
passed Algebra I last year and only 44
percent passed 10th-grade English.
We tend to agree with Hespe on this
point, though. Many students who
took the test the last two years knew it

didnt matter, so it would be no surprise if we could assume that many

didnt take the test seriously. Make the
test a graduation requirement, and
students will be more likely to try
harder.
While we dont necessarily like the
PARCC test in all forms, were not so
hell-bent against standardized testing
as a graduation requirement, in general. Education in New Jersey has always been held to a higher standard,
and its paid off; our students rank
higher than most in other states.
Can PARCC itself be improved and
better reflect a students learning? Of
course. But theres time to do that before 2021. Frankly, every student who
graduates high school in our state
should have the ability to pass a test in
Algebra I and 10th-grade English. How
those tests are administered, and how
they align with what we teach our
children in the classroom are what
need to be ironed out between now and
when its too late.

Moorestown Water Group launches White Ribbon Campaign

The Moorestown Water Group announced its White Ribbon Campaign, a
mission that aims to raise awareness
among residents regarding the serious
water issues discovered in the towns
water supply roughly three years ago. The
group has made serious strides in educating the community about the five known
contaminants currently found in their
water both manmade and naturally occurring through its monthly meetings
and Facebook page.
The Moorestown Water Group was instrumental in convincing the town to shut
down a contaminated well upon learning

that the state Department of Environmental Protection believed the toxic contaminants could have an increased cancer risk
on Moorestown families.
It also worked tirelessly with local assemblymen, congressmen and government
agencies to push the Environmental Protection Agency to retest a documented superfund site in Moorestown less than a
mile from the contaminated well to find the
possible source of the toxins. Recently, the
EPA notified the group of its decision to
retest this decision by the EPA is pivotal
for the community since currently the
cleanup is something that will burden tax-

payers.
For more information or to receive a ribbon and support the campaign, residents
can attend the Moorestown Water Group
monthly meetings or join the Moorestown
Water Facebook Page that posts constant
updates about the water crisis in
Moorestown and what local officials are
doing to clean up the problem.
For more information, you can email the
group at: moorestownwater@gmail.com.
In addition, you can contact group member
Kati Angelini for further details at (609)

INSURANCE PROTECTION
FOR ALL THAT'S IMPORTANT

their unwanted medications.

According to Project Medicine
Drop, for too many New Jerseyans, addiction begins in the
medicine cabinet. The initiative
additionally informs the public
that in June 2011, the state Commission of Investigation reported
that a growing number of young
people were abusing prescription
drugs, and noted a significant
trend in which the practice has
led to increases, not only in the
number of young people addicted
to painkillers but to the number
of young people using heroin as
well.
Any prescription drug that
can be kept out of the wrong
hands and disposed of properly

will help to fight the nationwide

epidemic. The more people that
take advantage of this project, the
more lives can be potentially
saved, Lieber said.
Hoping to encourage increased
use of the drop box, as of Jan. 1,
prescribers and pharmacies have
been required to provide a notice
about the drug take back programs to each patient upon dispensing a controlled dangerous
substance prescription medication.
I feel that this is yet another
great service provided by our
Moorestown Police Department
for the residents of Moorestown.
The ongoing efforts by the
Moorestown Police Department
will provide more opportunities
to eliminate unwanted medications from becoming a potential
safety threat for our residents,
Mayor Phil Garwood said. Hav-

ing a permanent drop-off facility

at the Moorestown Police Department headquarters will enable
our residents to safely dispose of
their unused prescription medications.
With this safety in mind, Project Medicine Drop has mandated
that boxes can only accept solid
medications such as pills, patches, inhalers and similar objects.
Additionally, the boxes cannot accept liquids, medical waste or syringes, but consumers wishing to
dispose of these objects should
speak with their doctors or pharmacists to find the safest and best
ways to do so.
Consumers can only dispose of
legal prescription or over-thecounter medications. Anyone
wishing to dispose of any illicit
drug should follow the normal
procedure of reporting it to police.
So far, there are more than 150
drop box locations throughout
the state, located primarily in police departments,
Residents will be able to drop
off prescription and over-thecounter medicines 24/7/365. However, after regular business
hours, they will have to utilize the
blue call box outside the front
door to have an officer respond
and assist them.
When a permanently mounted collection box became available, mounted at police headquarters, it was the obvious next step
to take, making it easier for our
residents and neighbors to properly dispose of unwanted medications throughout the year at their
convenience, Lieber said.

initiative coordinator at the N.J.

Newsweek conducts vast research for rankings

NEWSWEEK

other New Jersey high schools
made this list, 20 of which were
ranked higher than Moorestown
and 30 that ranked lower. The
Academy for Math, Science and
Engineering in Rockaway was
ranked the second-best high
school in the nation, and the
Union County Magnet High
School in Scotch Plains was
ranked fourth.
Currently there are 15,819 public high schools across the country, only 6,477 of which met the
criteria to be considered for
Newsweeks list.
To determine an accurate
ranking, Newsweek conducted
vast research that involved taking
objective measurements alongside the analytics firm, Westat.
Ultimately, these measurements
were meant to determine how
well each high school prepared its

&

students for college. Therefore,

Newsweek comprised a college
readiness index to more thoroughly weight its ranking system.
Included in this index were six
weighted measurement items encompassing: holding power at 10
percent, ratio of counselor/fulltime equivalent to student enrollment at 10 percent, weighted
SAT/ACT at 17.5 percent, weighted AP/IB/dual enrollment composite at 17.5 percent, graduation
rate at 20 percent and college enrollment rate at 25 percent. Data
from the National Center for Education Statistics was also used in
narrowing down Newsweeks list
of the top high schools.
A number of elements helped
pave the way to Moorestown High
Schools recognition, such as its
strategic plan implemented two
years ago to better prepare students for success in the 21st century.
Included in this plan was a
$12.9 million project to provide

Volunteers needed
VOLUNTEERS
Continued from page 4
with children who are eager to
learn and play can coach. Anyone
who is capable of shouting words
of encouragement, like great
job or so close, try it again can
coach. Anyone who enjoys sports
and watching the joy in new athletes, can coach. All it takes is a
little bit of patience, a sense of
humor and good sportsmanship.
Teaching children to be willing to
win and lose is a key component
to being a great volunteer coach.
Thats life, right? You win some,
you lose some.
There are many other volunteer opportunities available both
for young people and adults. The
Department of Parks and Recreation is always looking for youth
volunteers to work with programs. From arts and crafts and
childrens dance classes to recre-

ation sports leagues, the department is always looking for volunteers. To volunteer your time, and
have fun doing it, contact Kahra
Buss at kbuss@moorestown.nj.us
and indicate your age and interest in volunteerism.
So please consider being a
recreation volunteer coach for
any one of the fall sports your
children play! Your time is valuable to the program, but more so,
it is valuable to the children.
What better way to promote a
sense of service than by giving of
yourself ? What better way to
learn more about your child and
their friends than to be their
coach? What better way to make
an impact on our childrens
growth and development than to
give your time to them?
For more information about
volunteering, coaching, fall programs and more, please visit our
website
at
www.moorestownrec.com. Register today and enjoy the memories
for a lifetime.
