The Green
BookA Policy on
Geometric Design of Highways
and Streets, 5th Edition
This fth edition of AASHTOs
Green Book contains the latest
design practices in universal
use as the standard for highway
geometric design and has been
updated to reect the latest
research on superelevation and
side friction factors as presented in
NCHRP Report 439. New exhibits
in Chapter 3 will help designers to
quickly and accurately determine
the side friction factor used for
horizontal curve design, the
superelevation rates for various
curve radii, and the minimum radii
with normal crown for each of
the ve maximum superelevation
rates.The book features:
418 Exhibits, tables, and
drawings;
Dual units (metric and U.S.
customary) throughout;
Larger format to provide easyto-read text and graphics;
Available on CD-ROM
(single-user version);
Compliance with the Americans
with Disabilities Act;
Discusses the new AASHTO
Bicycle Guide and AASHTO
Pedestrian Guide;
Incorporates research from
NCHRP Reports 375, 383, 400,
420, and 439.

Guide for

Guide to
Park-and-Ride

A Guide for
Achieving
Flexibility in Highway Design
Context-sensitive solutions (CSS)
reect the need to consider
highway projects as more than
just transportation facilities.
Depending on how highway
projects are integrated into
the community, they can have
far-reaching impacts beyond
their trafc or transportation
function. CSS is a comprehensive
process that brings stakeholders
together in a positive, proactive
environment to develop projects
that not only meet transportation
needs, but also improve or
enhance the community.
Achieving a exible, contextsensitive design solution requires
designers to fully understand the
reasons behind the processes,
design values, and design
procedures that are used. This new
AASHTO guide shows highway
designers how to think exibly,
how to recognize the many choices
and options they have, and how to
arrive at the best solution for the
particular situation or context.
AASHTO Guide
for the Planning,
Design, and Operation of
Pedestrian Facilities
The purpose of this guide
is to provide guidance on
the planning, design, and
operation of pedestrian facilities
along streets and highways.
Specically, the guide focuses on
identifying effective measures for
accommodating pedestrians on
public rights-of-way. Appropriate
methods for accommodating
pedestrians, which vary among
roadway and facility types, are
described in this guide. The
primary audiences for this manual
are planners, roadway designers,
and transportation engineers,
whether at the state or local
level, the majority of whom make
decisions on a daily basis that
affect pedestrians. This guide also
recognizes the profound effect that
land use planning and site design
have on pedestrian mobility and
addresses these topics as well.

Bridge Design
Specications, 3rd Edition
This major step in the improved
bridge design and more accurate
analysis is expected to lead to
bridges exhibiting superior
serviceability, enhanced longterm maintainability, and more
uniform levels of safety. Based
on the load-and resistance factor
design philosophy (LRFD), this
book is the result of a ve-year
research effort under AASHTOs
National Cooperative Highway
Research Program (NCHRP)
Project 12-33. Since the rst
edition was published in 1994,
the provisions have continued to
be updated and improved based
on continuing research and the
experience of the user community.
The new specications have
been systematically tested in
trial designs in bridge design
divisions of 14 AASHTO Member
Departments.

An Informational Guide for Roadway Lighting
This guide replaces the 1984 publication entitled An
Informational Guide for Roadway Lighting. It has been revised and
brought up to date to reect current practices in roadway lighting. The
guide provides a general overview of lighting systems from the point of
view of the transportation departments and recommends minimum
levels of quality. The guide incorporates the illuminance and luminance
design methods, but does not include the small target visibility (STV)
method.

AASHTO SDMS
SDMS is a detailed data structure that has been
dened, documented, and adopted by AASHTO
for recording eld survey information and is detailed in the AASHTO
publication, AASHTO SDMS Technical Data Guide 2000. SDMS
consists of two modules: SDMS Collector and SDMS Processor.
SDMS Collector
A survey data collection software system that can be used for
common surveying tasks and complies with the AASHTO SDMS
standard data structure. It currently runs on DOS-based computers,
laptops, and hand-held PCs, and communicates with most
commercially available total station instruments.
SDMS Windows CE Collector
The2004 release of the SDMS CE Collector is designed to provide
survey data collection in the Windows CE environment. The SDMS
CE Collector maintains the functionality of the SDMS DOS Collector,
introduces communication with electronic levels, and provides basic
coordinate geometry routines. However, the SDMS CE Collector will
initially only be available to project participants. SDMS CE Collector
will be initially available only to project participants.
SDMS Processor
This is a Microsoft Windows-based system for import and
management of SDMS Collector data les. SDMS Processor
will import and process routines from all SDMS Collector tasks,
activities, and tags; and output an SDMS points, attributes and
chains (PAC) le that contains least squares computed and
adjusted values as well as analyzed and assembled line connectivity
information.
To obtain a product brochure or information on pricing and licensing
