If inhaled, remove from the contaminated area. If victim is not

breathing provide artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult,
provide oxygen. Seek medical attention.

Ingestion

Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical

personnel. Provide water to rinse mouth out. Never give anything
by mouth to an unconscious person. Loosen tight clothing such as
a collar, tie, belt or waistband. Seek medical attention if
symptoms appear.

Cold water may be used. Seek medical attention.

Note to physician

Treat symptomatically. Explosive material. May cause

methemoglobinemia. Treat as for exposure to nitrates.
For ammonium nitrate: Clinical findings: The smooth muscle
relaxant effect of nitrate salts may lead to headache, dizziness and
marked hypotension. Cyanosis is clinically detectable when
approximately 15% of the haemoglobin has been converted to
methaemoglobin (ie. ferric iron). Symptoms such as headache,
dizziness, weakness and dyspnoea occur when methaemoglobin
concentrations are 30% to 40%; at levels of about 60%, stupor,
convulsions, coma and respiratory paralysis occur and the blood is
a chocolate brown colour. At higher levels death may result.
Spectrophotometric analysis can determine the presence and
concentration of methaemoglobin in blood.
Treatment:
1. Give 100% oxygen.
2. In cases of:
a. ingestion: use gastric lavage.
b. contamination of skin (unburnt or burnt): continue washing
to remove
3. Observe blood pressure and treat hypotension if necessary.
4. When methaemoglobin concentrations exceed 40% or when
symptoms are present, give methylene blue 1 to 2 mg/kg body
weight in a 1% solution by slow intravenous injection. If
cyanosis has not resolved within one hour a second dose of
2mg/kg body weight may be given. The total dose should not
exceed 7 mg/kg body weight as unwanted effects such as
dyspnoea, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, mental confusion
and cyanosis may occur. Without treatment methaemoglobin
levels of 20-30% revert to normal within 3 days.
5. Bed rest is required for methaemoglobin levels in excess of
40%.
6. Continue to monitor and give oxygen for at least two hours
after treatment with methylene blue.
7. Consider transfer to centre where haemoperfusion can be
performed to remove the nitrates from the blood if the condition
of the patient is unstable.
8. Following inhalation of oxides of nitrogen the patient should be
observed in hospital for 24 hours for delayed onset of
pulmonary oedema.

Further observation for 2-3 weeks may be required to detect the

onset of the inflammatory changes of bronchiolitis fibrosa
obliterans. No specific treatment. Treat symptomatically.
Call medical doctor or Poisons Information Centre immediately if
large quantities are ingested.

5.

FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Hazards from
combusting products

Oxidizing substance. Will support combustion of other materials.

Increases intensity of a fire. Decomposes on heating emitting
irritating white fumes. Brown fumes indicate the presence of toxic
oxides of nitrogen.

Special protective
equipment and
precautions for firefighters

When controlling fire before involvement of explosives, fire fighters

should wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus
(SCBA) and full turnout gear. Fire fighters protective clothing will
provide limited protection.
DO NOT FIGHT FIRE WHEN IT REACHES MATERIAL. Withdraw
from fire and let it burn. Promptly isolate the scene by removing
all persons from the vicinity of the incident if there is a fire. First
move people out of line-of-sight of the scene and away from
windows.
No additional remarks.

6.

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Emergency
procedures

Clear area of all unprotected personnel. Shut off all possible

sources of ignition. Wear protective equipment to prevent skin and

Product Deterioration

Due to Ammonium Nitrates incompatibility with

tetranitromethane, dichloroisocyanuric acid, trichloroisocyanuric
acid, any bromates, chlorates, chlorites, hypochlorites or
chloroisocyanurate or any inorganic nitrites, it must be stored
separately from these types of Items.
Storage must be in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
When not in use containers need to remain sealed and checked
regularly for leakages.

Deterioration occurs due to a process of slow crystallization of the

ammonium nitrate out of the super saturated salt encapsulated
oxidiser resulting in an increase of viscosity or thickening. Under
heating for prolonged periods the emulsion may separate into its
original components. Degraded Product can become unsuitable for
further use.
It must be ensured that ammonium nitrate is stored securely and
in accordance with regulations/controls issued by relevant
authority. Secure storage of ammonium nitrate within Australia
does include but is not limited to: the use of site security plans,
locking the facility/container with physical restraining items,
validation and record keeping of all stock, and where suitably
deemed necessary through a risk management approach, constant
surveillance. Inside Australia, all persons who have unsupervised
access to Security Sensitive Ammonium Nitrate (SSAN) are
required to have security clearances. Issuing of security clearances
is controlled and issued through the local Government authorities.
Checks would include the following: a criminal history check (CHC),
and a politically motivated violence check (PMV).

8.

EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

Occupational
Exposure Limits

No exposure limit values assigned for this specific material by the

Safe Work Australia. However, the available exposure limits for the
ingredients of the substance are as follows:

SDS_Surface Sensitised Bulk Emulsion_Rev 02.docx9 July 2015

Page | 7

Safety Data Sheet

Surface Sensitized Emulsion

Oil mist, refined mineral: 8hr TWA = 5 mg/m3 (as published by

the Safe Work Australia).
TWA - The time-weighted average airborne concentration over an
eight-hour working day, for a five-day working week over an entire
working life.
These Exposure Standards are to be used as guides in the control
of occupational health hazards. All attempts should be made to
keep atmospheric contamination at as low a level as is workable.
These exposure standards are not a measure of relative toxicity
and should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and
dangerous concentrations of chemicals.

Appropriate
engineering controls

Individual protection
measures, such as
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)

Supplier recommended Exposure Standard:

Diesel Oil: 5 mg/m3 (stable aerosols) for 8 hour time-weighted
average (TWA).
Provide exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls to keep
the airborne concentrations of vapours below their respective
occupational exposure limits.
The selection of PPE is dependent on a detailed risk assessment.
The risk assessment should consider the work situation, the
physical form of the chemical, the handling methods, and
environmental factors.
Recommended PPE is OVERALLS (Buttoned to the Neck and wrist),
SAFETY SHOES, SAFETY GLASSES, GLOVES.

Wear overalls, safety glasses and impervious gloves. Always wash

hands before smoking, eating, drinking or using the toilet.
