FLEISCHMANNS RED LETTER NAMES

Fleischmanns Red Letter Names
from the Greater Fleischmanns
Museum of Memories
The Fleischmann Family summered here for over 30 years.
They contributed greatly to the growth of the village. When
they left for good in 1913, they generously donated the land
that is today the Village Park on Wagner Avenue. As a result
the Village of Griffin Corners was changed in name to
FLEISCHMANNS to honor them. Charles Fleischmann
bought the land that became their family compound in 1883,
and quickly five mansions were built for various family
members. (Picture a 19th century version of the Kennedy
Compound.) The yeast business was the foundation of the
family fortune, begun shortly after the family came to this
country from Austria in the 1860s. But there were also liquor and restaurant interests as well. Julius, the son of Charles,
served several terms as Mayor of Cincinnati, and was partowner of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. As boys, Julius
and his brother Max loved baseball, so Charles created the
ball field on Wagner Avenue, and brought in some big-name
baseball players such as Miller Huggins and Honus Wagner
to play ball here.
Visit the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories to
learn more about this important family; new this year is a
special display on their presence here in the Catskills.

Beberts Continued.
Berbert Attias, a chef who has worked
at some of New York Citys best hotels
including the Pierre, Hilton and Crowne
Plaza, and his partner Diane Adema are
poised to open their new retail shop on
Main Street any day now. The former
Zoom Gallery is now fitted with a full commercial kitchen where
Berbert will prepare vegetarian meals as well as sell his condiments,
chutney, preserved lemons, fruit compote, organic herbs and spices
already known to area residents and visitors who have visited his
stand at the annual Cauliflower Festival in Margaretville.
Berbert who was born in Morocco is looking forward to sharing
foods prepared in the Moroccan tradition. Diane, an artist, has tastefully decorated the space with her own artwork which is also for
sale.
The adjacent yard has table seating and a deck where they hope
local farmers will offer fresh produce. Beberts Condiments is a
member of Pure Catskills.
They plan to open as soon as the inspector gives them the go ahead
which should be any day. Beberts Condiments will be open Thursday through Sunday to start. We welcome them to Fleischmanns
and wish them success!

Fleischmanns on Saturday May 28th
On Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 28 th10-4pm,
Fleischmanns will once again host a village-wide celebration
and street fair.
Look forward to a day of music, food and
shopping as well as fun. As many as 50 vendors are expected and the sidewalks of Main

chairs placed in front of the Gazebo where
music entertainment will be in full force.
Watch for our very own Maple Princesses as
they ride down Main Street in a spectacular vintage car. Listen to the music of Country Express.
Last year the bounce house was such a success that we are
bringing it back. When the kids are done bouncing, theyll be
thrilled with ice cream from The Pine Hill/Fleischmanns Rotary. Check out the Fleischmanns First booth where you can
buy your very own Maple Bake-Off Cookbook, make a donation and renew your membership and get a free shopping
bag or even buy a flashy Fleischmanns First Tee Shirt.
