FLEISCHMANNS RED LETTER NAMES

Fleischmanns Red Letter Names
from the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories-Gertrude Berg
Known to generations of radio and early TV fans as Molly Goldberg, Gertrude Berg had strong ties to Fleischmanns her entire life. She
was born in 1899 NY City, but spent summers in her teenage years here. Her father ran what had been the Fleischmann Family estate
as a hotel complex, and Gertrude soon found that she had a talent at keeping the
guests entertained, presenting skits that showed off her comic flair. After a brief
time in the South, she came back north at broke into early radio programming in
NYC with her wise and loving character of Molly, the quintessential Jewish
mother. In over 5000 radio broadcasts, several years of TV, and even a stint on
Broadway, Gertrudes Molly kept millions of people entertained for over 35
years. She won an Emmy Award and a Tony Award, and for many years was
one of the most powerful forces in the entertainment world.
She never forgot her time here in Fleischmanns, and kept in touch with people here, came to visit,
and even worked incidents and names from her time here into her shows. At her death in 1966, her
instructions were to be buried here--her grave in Clovesville attracts many visitors still.
Note in the post card image, which dates from the time Gertrude was here, her father's name listed
as the proprietor.

A Boy Named Oliver

Who Would Not Eat Anything Green!
My grandson, Oliver, refused to eat anything that was green. Distressed that he was not getting proper nutrition and in a last ditch
attempt to get him to try a green, I bought a saucer planter of lettuce
seedlings at the Farmers market. Throughout the early summer, Oliver and I dutifully watered the plants and were thrilled when they
grew. We harvested the lettuce and Oliver was enthusiast about eating
it with Grandpas dressing. The next summer, we took a plot in the
Fleischmanns Community Garden and grew kale, lettuce, herbs and
tomatoes. Oliver loves to tend the vegetable and even more he loves
his greens!
Join the Fleischmanns Community Garden for $10 and get a plot in
which to grow anything green, or yellow or red or orange. It just may
change your eating habits as it did Olivers!

Maple Festival 2016 a Success Despite Irritable Mother Nature

Over 100 people came to events on Main Street on Saturday, April 2 nd and another 100 plus on Sunday, April 3 rd even
though the weather was
wintery and snowy. We watched the weather forecast
all week and were thrilled
when the sun actually came out on Saturday late
morning just in time for the
hay wagon rides down Main Street to the Davis Farm
where visitors saw the wood
fired evaporator at work.
Earlier in the day, the Maple
was in high gear with guests
area. The rough count was
dren. The breakfast was

Skene was also the site of the Museum of Memories Maple Sugaring in the Catskills presented by John Duda with readings by Bill Birns and Sally
Fairbairn from writings by John Burroughs and Sallys late sister in law describing past generations versions of tapping and maple sugaring, a
video on maple sugaring as a business, a power point presentation of vintage postcard and photos and a presentation by Linda Rogers on her experience of tapping and producing maple sugar for personal use over the last 25 years. The 40-50 attendees were treated to a presentation of vintage
tapping tools from the Van Beschoten farm on loan from Rudd Hubbell.
The newly sheet rocked walls of 1053 Main Street were adorned with paintings, pottery, sculpture and maple furniture
when Maple on Main Art Exhibit organized by RAG opened on Saturday. An artists Reception was very well attended and happily several artworks were purchased.

Upon awaking on Sunday morning to 3 inches of snow, many would be

runners were concerned the Sap House 5k Race would be cancelled but a
little snow didnt deter Fleischmanns First. Volunteers were out by 10am
manning the road and registering the 30 hardy participants. The overall
winner was Danielle Frankowiak . The award ceremony took place at The
Maple Bake-Off Caf.

It was a day of awards and ceremonies! Three lovely Maple Princesses were
crowned and sashed by Mayor Don Kearney; they were asked to be ambassadors of
good will for Fleischmanns and to attend key events throughout the year. Adele
Suyama, Simone Norwich and Brynna Asher were thrilled as were we as they took
on their mantle.

Nancy McShane & Alix Travers

Lastly, the winners of this years Maple Bake-Off were Beth Casper, and Aida Perez for traditional cakes and Ivy Frenkel and
Juliana Torres for their intergeneration cake. All of the entries were delicious; the judges reported having a difficult time selecting the blue ribbon winners. The sentiment was echoed by the roughly 100 people in attendance that also has a chance to
taste the entries and then bid on their favorite. The auction conducted with humor and panache by Bob Novak was a fundraiser
for Fleischmanns First; thank you to all who baked and those that participated in the auction.
Each year, the Maple Festival expands and this year it was the first of the signature events of the Route 28 Scenic Byway.
With generous marketing and promotional funds we were able to add new events and attract more than 200 people to Fleischmanns and Main Street. We thank all of our sponsors for their generous support.
Hiram Davis

Next years Maple Festival will return on one of the two Maple Weekends designated by NY State Maple Producers Association.

2016 Flower Barrel Campaign & Waiting for Spring to Arrive

By the recent low temps and snowfall over the Maple Festival weekend, winter hasnt quite yet given way to spring, but we remain hopeful and as
the song books saySpring is eternal.
This years Flower Barrel Plans are underway. We traditionally plant around 30 barrels and place them throughout the Village. Planting date this year will be Friday May 27 th just before Memorial Day Weekend. Volunteers
are always needed and welcome. We will gather at the Gazebo at 10 AM for instruction and supplies. Bring a
hand trowel and garden gloves and wear comfortable clothes. The Planting usually completes in about two hours
and a fun time is had by all. Come meet some of your neighbors.
As in years past, to make this happen, we rely solely on your help and financial generosity. A new barrel with
potting soil and flowers cost approximately $65. Just new soil and flowers to refurbish an existing barrel runs
approximately $35 each. Each year, due to wear & tear & aging we must replace a few of the wooden barrels.
Please consider sponsoring a barrel or contribute to the campaign by helping out or by sending a check made out to the Village of Fleischmanns,
PO Box 339 Fleischmanns NY, 12430. Please note on your check - Flower Barrel Campaign.
For more information or to help with the planting or ongoing summer watering activities, please contact Pam Grocholl, 254-4325.
