WhatisNSG?
TheNSGisaninternationalorganisationthataimstocontrolproliferationofnuclear
weapons.This48memberbodywasestablishedtopreventciviliannucleartradefrombeing
usedformilitarypurposes.Itwasformedbythesignatoriestothenonproliferationtreaty
(NPT).ThoughtheNSGhasbeenopentoadmittingnewmemberstoitsclan,thegrouphas
sofaropeneditsdoorsonlytonationsthatarepartoftheNPTorComprehensiveTestBan
Treaty(CTBT).IndiahassignedneithertheNPTnortheCTBT.
This48memberbodywasestablishedtopreventcivilian
nucleartradefrombeingusedformilitarypurposes.

Whywasitformedandwhatwasitsobjective?
TheNSGwasfoundedinreactiontotheIndiannucleartestinMay1974.Themainobjectiveofthebody,tobeginwith,wastomakesure
thatthenuclearenergywasusedonlyforpeacefulpurposesandnotforweaponmaking.
India,Pakistan,IsraelandSouthSudanareamongfourUNmemberstateswhichhavenotsignedtheNPT,theinternationalpactaimed
atpreventingthespreadofnuclearweapons.MembershipofNSGhelpseasethetransferoftechnology,rawmaterialsamongthe
participantcountriesanduscompanies.

WheredoesIndiastandintheNSG?
InJuly2006,theUnitedStatesCongressamendedUSlawstoallowciviliannucleartradewithIndia.
In2008,theNSGparticipatinggovernmentsagreedtograntIndiaa"cleanwaiver"fromitsexistingrules,whichforbidnucleartradewitha
countrywhichhasnotsignedtheNuclearNonProliferationTreaty(NPT).
InNovember2010,PresidentBarackObamaannouncedUSsupporttoIndia'sparticipationintheNuclearSuppliersGroup.InJanuary
2015,duringhisIndiavisit,ObamasaidthatIndiawasreadyfortheNSGmembership.China'sforeignministryofferedconditionalsupport
forIndianmembershipintheNSG.PakistanappliedfortheNSGmembershipinMay2016,probablytoblockIndia'sentryintothegroup.
