Serving the Lord in the Dominican Republic

Salmo 98:1
Cantad a Jehov cntico
nuevo, Porque ha hecho
maravillas.

Oh sing to the LORD a

new song, for He has done
marvelous things!

Fun Facts about the DR

The main source of income in the DR
used to come from coffee, sugar, and
tobacco. Nowadays, it comes from
tourism. in fact, in 1977 the Miss
Universe pageant was hosted in Santo
Domingo to promote tourism.

Un Cantico Nuevo
Music is one of our greatest challenges here in the Dominican Republic,
yet at the same one of our greatest joys. Our people in the
congregations love to sing to the Lord. Along with that joy, we have
numerous youth across the congregations who serve as our
accompanists on guitar and electric piano/keyboard. Thats a joy to be
sure, but also a challenge. While they have the talent to play, they need
leadership and direction. While many of us missionaries have musical
experience, few of us have the experience to teach or the time to offer
regular music workshops and clinics. We wear a lot of hats in the field.
Aside from teaching the music itself, we also spend time teaching about
music. Luther loved music and placed it second to theology in
importance. As we teach the songs here, we strive to teach about the
content of the music, what music is appropriate for worship, what songs
fit into the context of the liturgy or with the readings of the day. While
there are a couple of Spanish language Lutheran hymnals available, we
dont have a ton of copies of them and not all of the music is playable by
our young musicians. Unfortunately, even some of the content is not the
best. We choose a lot of songs and hymns that are drawn directly from
Scripture so that we all learn the story of salvation, of which we are a
part.

JULY/AUGUST 2016

Psalm 98:1 invites us to sing to the Lord a new song. The old song was the Song of Moses after God freed
the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and they crossed the Red Sea. Perhaps the new song referenced in
Psalm 98 and others is the liberation of the Israelites from exile in Babylon. What is our new song as Gods
redeemed people today? Its the song of redemption in Christ, perhaps the great Te Deum of Revelation
praising our God who sits on the throne and the Lamb who was slain. Its new in that sense to be sure, but
also new each day because the Lords mercies are new every morning as we return to our Baptism. In the
midst of many joys and challenges, we sing the new song with Gods people here in the Dominican. What an
amazing truth to ponder that we also sing it with you, wherever you are, and with the whole company of
heaven. Thanks for singing with us and supporting us with your gifts and prayers. Sing to the Lord a new
song, for He has done marvelous things!

Mission Work Updates

Short Term Team/Music Camp
In late July we had a short-term team of musicians from Michigan
and Ohio come and put on a music camp for our youth. For four
days they worked with about 20 youth on piano, guitar, recorder
and singing. It was not only a blessings for our youth in increasing
their music skills, but also gave youth from all of our missions an
opportunity for fellowship and worship together. Our youth from
Las Americas were really pumped when we got back and havent
stopped talking about what a blessing this workshop was for them.

Another Baptism and Confirmation

At our mission in Ensanche Ozama, Santo Domingo Este, Vicar
James Neuendorf leads a Bible study every Saturday night in a
nearby neighborhood. His wife Deaconess Christel gathers
together children from the community during that time for a
Bible lesson, coloring and singing. This has brought a number
of new people to our mission. Recently, Yanet (see pic on right)
was baptized into Christ. Also Michelle, one of our youth,
finished her catechism class and was confirmed. We have a
number of other baptisms on the horizon here. Please continue
to pray that the Lord will help us connect with more people as
we bring the Gospel of Christ into these communities.

Forming Pastors in the Dominican

Just a few days ago the Pastors and Vicars serving in the
Dominican had a meeting to discuss vicarages and plans
for new pastors in the next couple of years. Vicar Idjon
Fritz has been serving his vicarage in Palmar Arriba for
about a year now. Seminarian Yban Navarro will soon
begin his vicarage in Licey. By Gods grace, by the end of
2017, we will have two more Dominican pastors to serve
along with our one currently ordained Dominican, Pastor
Willy Gaspar. Plans for a Dominican seminary are still in
development. The Lord is providing pastors and
deaconesses for His Church. Thanks be to God!

Family
Updates
We are so happy to share that we have had an incredible summer. Half of the summer was spent in the United States
reconnecting with family. Clarion, Sergei, and Andrei were in Houston for a month. Viktor and Joel first went to a Higher
Things conference in Nashville and then Viktor joined the others in Houston while Joel continued on to another Higher
Things conference in Iowa. There was a lot of needed time spent with grandparents. We also had so much fun with
cousins, sisters, brothers, aunts, and uncles. This time was such an incredible blessing!
Another highlight of the summer was music camp in Santiago. Joel, Viktor, and Sergei got to participate while Clarion had
some precious time with Andrei at home. All the youth are clamoring for another music camp!
Our last hurrah of the summer was the all-missionary retreat in Puerto Plata here in the Dominican. We love our
missionary family very much and had a great week of Bible-study, worship, fellowship, and fun with them all. The smiles
went from ear to ear all week, even through the pain of sunburn.
As you can see above, it is back to school for the three boys. Joel and Clarion have some new adventures in front of
them as they continue to work in Las Americas and Ozama and keep up with the changes on the field. Thanks for
catching up with us! Gods blessings until next time.
